In some ways the signing of Shelvey made sense, given that he had several years of PL experience including in relegation battles.

It was a shame that Shelvey was a total smunt and not a particularly good player either; one would have thought the DoF we had at that time would know him.

It absolutely did not make sense, given the - now apparently clear - financial shackles the club should have been operating under. Neither, in hindsight, does the signing of Chris Wood, for Fifteen Million quid.

But, I am sure that taking that pair off the hands of Newcastle will have helped the north-eastern side‘s FFP compliance.

Maybe I'm clutching at straws here, but I'm hoping that there is meaning in the massive disparity in tone between Everton and Forest's official statements. Everton's is full of grievances. Ours has the air of expecting to be let go with a tolerable punishment so let's behave our best. Maybe we genuinely have mitigating circumstances and/or got docked due to some misunderstanding of a minor technicality. In any case it's a real disappointment and was completely avoidable.
