The Mood

Having witnessed the late 70’s Forest I had sadly become accustomed to an existence below the premier league - as someone in their late 50’s I was apoplectic when we got promoted a few years ago never imagining that I would witness a top flight team again in my lifetime.

So imagine how I am feeling right now …..

I've been feeling 15 again for most of this season, so I'd say my mood is sky high. I really don't care what happens from now until May.

Of course, I'd like to win every game, but I had an eye jab yesterday and spent the day listening to the radio as it was too painful watching telly. Last night on the Monday Night Club, they had a lead item on Murillo! Imagine, being where the Sky 6 are traditionally placed.

I've probably posted before about the 66/67 season when my dad took me to several Forest games at the age of 14/15.

Driving back to Radcliffe on the unmade Holme Pierrepont road, Sports Report on the car radio, Forest's run of one defeat in many games growing ever longer.

Grummitt, Hindley, Winfield, Hennessey, McKinlay, Newton, Lyons, Barnwell, Baker, Wignall, Storey-Moore. The side finished runners-up to Man U in the league and reached the FA Cup semi-finals. I'd settle for a repeat achievement this season, even better if we make the CL and win the cup.

And I’ve probably replied before because that season always fascinated me as I was taken to my first game the following season (I’d have been 4) and from then until the glory years a decade later my dad fondly recalled the 66/67 season as what was and would as far as anyone knew remain our best ever season. Delighted though we were that this didn’t prove to be the case my liking for that team/season that I never saw never left me.

The Forest quiz book I wrote a decade or so ago actually came about as a by-product of my trying to get a publisher interested in the story of the 66/67 team. Someone at the publishers initially liked my idea before asking if I would add a Forest book to their series of club quiz books instead.

If this year’s team lives as long in the memory as the 66/67 side the last two months of the season will have been fantastic…

I was fortunate enough to witness my first Forest games as an eight year old in 66/67 and the main similarity I can
see with this season and indeed the Clough Championship winning side is that we far exceeded expectations in all three campaigns.

Well my mood was already fantastic after today's result but to top it off my nightshift got cancelled just as I left the house to go so I'm now in bed being paid watching match of the day and we're on first what the f*** but suppose we are the highest placed team to play today 😲 how mental is that

Brentford have an amazing away record recently. They worry me. Also Newcastle winning the cup should boost them. I'm constantly swinging between optimism and pessimism! Beat United and i think I'll be super optimistic again.

Hard to say how winning the League Cup will effect Newcastle. In a way, this season is a massive success for them no matter what happens and they are already guaranteed some form of European football next year too.

They might play better without the pressure of having to do anything to make this season a success, or they might lose a bit of intensity with there not being an urgent need to really do anything else this season (although I'm sure they would like Champions League football).

Remember when every man and his dog were fawning over Brentford’s home record (until some knights in red shining armour rode in and spanked them)? Well that was because they played all the terrible teams at home and the good ones away.

Guess what, they now can’t win for toffee at home but suddenly have a great away record. I wonder what’s going on here?

Colour me not worried about Brentford.

I worry about Palace away as they’re flying at the moment but hopefully their good run will be over by then.

But all the others don’t worry me much - I’m not daft enough to think that we will win them all but I believe we have a chance in all of them to pick up points.

Haven’t felt this excited since 1980 & just told the wife I’ll take her to Barcelona if we have a game there next year - though she wouldn’t even watch a World Cup final if England were in it.

Did Forest fans create in the Forest (Jungle) Win away chant ?

I hear Brentford singing it now on the telly.
QPR fans got there a few years earlier, with "never" in the chorus instead of "always". That said, my guess would be that Forest's away support arrived at it independently.

They’ve got a piss easy run in…

Perhaps. But sometimes things like this can lead to strange results. One way or another their mentality post-cup win is going to be very different. Whether that is a good thing or a bad thing for the remainder of their league campaign remains to be seen.

If it makes you feel any better, Brentford had an amazing home record until they faced us.
