Summer 2020 Bargains

Sure, so it would have had to be an amazing transfer window to compensate and turn us from a team who's been 5th/4th most of the season into something greater. Very unlikely to happen.

The parallel with Leeds is some of our fans seem to be implying that our transfer business in January would have improved our form and league position, when infact they're confusing causation and correlation.

Purely subjective, but my analysis of this season would have Lamouchis influence over the quality of players. Beyond Sow, Cash Watson I dont see much that represents a fit for the lamouchi approach, I think he's manoevered us strategically to the position we're in.

This approach doesnt necessarily need star players, it needs players who fit whats clearly Lamouchis one & only offering. To that end, we could have helped ourselves in January. I definitely think theres room for improvement beyond our current position given some of the struggles we've encountered at home.

And what would these immediate impact fantasy players have given us? How would things be different?

A few more assists goals and decent performances. I would argue that Bong and Diakhaby have not contributed anything and the manager can’t trust them come into the first team and rest others. Da Costa has been injured which is bad luck but wasn’t he injured when we got him?

Maybe Forest should have just bought some more Defenders?

Everyone agreed we needed pace, so we signed a player with pace.

The reality is we didn't have a lot of money to spend (a fact now known since the accounts released) and the squad we had was doing remarkably well. We weren't going to spend loads anyway and signing a number of players may have disrupted squad harmony.

From a fan POV I think it's just easiest to accept that our financial clout is limited and our league performance considering is wonderful, rather than nitpick at whether or not Da Costa will make it here based on 45 minutes of evidence.

We have made obvious recruitment errors in the recent past, but this season we've done well. I find it really hard to criticise anyone at the club for their performance this year.

Performance and subsequent promotion out of the Championship is primarily related to income; that’s been proven over several seasons, by various clubs.

Apart from basket cases (hello, Sunderland) a Club that operates carefully in the transfer market will generally do better than one that throws money about like a pissed Sailor on shore leave.

Forest’s commercial income is about 15th/16th in the division (from memory) and currently they’re punching well above that weight.

Wage bill is the best predictor of finishing league position. Ours is about 9th or 10th highest, so yes we are punching above our weight.

No. Da Costa made an appearance from the bench during the game against Charlton Athletic, which clearly indicates that he was match-fit, if not quite match-sharp. It was to help him improve his sharpness that he started the U-23 game a couple of days later, during which he unfortunately sustained the injury that has since caused him to be unavailable for selection.

As you rightly say Emmo, a definite case of bad luck, for both the player and SL.

If you look at our books we are 10 mill under and that’s includes the transfer window where we spent 25 mill and didn’t recruit a penny. We could easily of spent another 5 mill but I’m not complaining just making the point that we have leeway with FFP. We could get by each year by having a net spend on transfers of -5 mill per season.

That being the case the current regime want to try and be sustainable which is commendable and considering that we have done extremely well as a club. I think Lamouchi more than transfers have pushed up the league. I would also say that January if your not going spend a bit of money in jan we might as well played Mighten and Walker. There is no point getting shite in because it’s cheap if you have youngsters waiting in the wings. Then wait until summer where prices aren’t ridiculous.

That's all very well and good Emmo, but it's "We could easily have spent another 5 mill".

I posted this the other day in another thread but it's worth reposting. In the 8 league games since the transfer window closed the top 6 has performed like this -

Leeds P8 W5 D1 L2 pts 16
West Brom P8 W5 D2 L1 pts 17
Fulham P8 W4 D3 L1 pts 15
Brentford P8 W3 D4 L1 13 pts
FOREST P8 W2 D3 L3 9 pts
Preston P8 W3 D1 L3 10 pts

That, to me, says we're now suffering the consequences of having a thin squad, certainly in terms of quality. January should have been about either adding quality (preferable) or quantity, to give us options for the final push of games. It's hard to say we succeeded, but it still might be enough if we cobble together enough points in the final 9 games to stay in the playoffs. 27 points up for grabs still.

Point taken mate, but although we're all capable of spelling mistakes, I genuinely struggle to get beyond basic grammatical errors such as the of/have issue whist reading posts. However, please be assured that I'm always happy to be of help by pointing these things out.

Summer 2020 could be interesting. If the season overruns past 30 June those contracts terminating will have to be adjusted or there will be a bidding war right at the time we are all vying for promotion or fighting relegation.

I wonder which players will accept this adjustment and which will fight it, being desperate to leave for various reasons.

Could be fun and make a few lawyers rich.

An XI from the bottom 5 Championship teams. Target 1,2,3 of these players if they get relegated and we stay in the division.

Dillon Philipps (Charlton)

Right-back
Tom Lockyer (Charlton)
Reece Burke (Hull)
Clarke Oduor (Barnsley)

Sam Morsy (Wigan)
Alex Mowatt (Barnsley)
Joe Williams (Wigan)

Jacob Brown (Barnsley)
Luke Thomas (Barnsley)

1 of Kieffer Moore (Wigan)/Lyle Taylor (Charlton)/Conor Chaplin (Barsnley) & Cauley Woodrow (both Barnsley)

I'd take almost all of those.

It'll be interesting to see how end-of-contract situations play out if the season doesn't finish, especially clubs in mid-table who have no prospect of relegation and perhaps are happy to let players off their books.

Hopefully the League will make sure these complications don't happen.

It is one of the many reasons I want the season to just be completed even if behind closed doors.

Looks good but to fit into our set up, can he cross?

He doesn't look the type to get the ball into the box as quick as possible so it would be maybe something he would need to work on.

But I just wonder. When we signed Yuri Ribeiro we were told no length of contract other than he was on a deal at Benfica till 2023 and we got him for free and have a 50% sell-on so how long is he ours ?
