I see the argument here but how many times does the effective third choice keeper get to play? It would need the first and second choices to be injured and/or suspended.

Keepers don't get injured or sent off that often really so if this was a route we did go down I don't think Bott would get much more than the odd game sat on the bench.

Though it'd be very Forest for there to be a spell where Sels broke something and then Miguel got sent off for shithousing and then we'd be playing the third choice...

The two obvious benefits are:
- Bott's age means we wouldn't need to register him to use him so we could give that place to another outfielder
- we could spend the money getting in a 3rd choice on other areas of the squad
You always need cover though, which is why pretty much everyone has three senior keepers. Not a chance an untested 19yr old is risked imho.

Quite the prediction, will be an interesting situation to watch.
I just think the fee is deceptive because it’s a release clause. His true value on paper is probably much higher & if he went for that people would presume he will be number 1.

He seems to have a real X Factor based on what I have seen.

Sels is a good keeper and Johnstone is a very good keeper. Sels did a fine job when he came in and bailed us out of a bad state, but Johnstone would a significant upgrade in that position and the two would at least push each other.

Look at the reaction of their fans, coupled with the disbelief that his release clause was lowered from €50m to €4m.

Add the world class saves he's made in the last few games & I'm also very, very excited about this bloke.

As I say, I reckon he's gonna be an absolute revelation & no doubt will be our number one very quickly.

No thanks to johnston, we don't need 3 senior keepers competing for 1 shirt, we ain't chelsea.
If we really need a no.3 , go for that andrew ventura, he's still young and in time, will compete with miguel for the shirt.

Given our major issue at the GK position over the last 2 season I’m surprised at the level of confidence shown in our current keeper situation.

Around 20 league games before we get another opportunity to upgrade in January. I’d be stocking up now. Let them fight it out, move someone on in January if I was comfortable with a set #1- #2 situation at that stage.

But it is a completely different situation? Turner had looked OK at Arsenal but had never had an extended period starting so was still unproven. Likewise Vlach who seemed to have done well abroad, but again unproven.

Sels shown enough (to me at least) to be a capable 'keeper. Is he going to win you games, probably not, but I don't think he will lose you games like Turner and Vlach were doing on a regular basis. Miguel is coming in unexperienced but with a lot of potential, he fits the understudy role well (for now). Much like Scott Carson, Rob Green, the likes of Dan Bentley being wanted by Arsenal and even Hennessey last season, you want that type as your third choice. Sels, Miguel and Johnstone is just overkill and then you would be having to deal with the PSR implications and an unhappy room on top of that.

I just don't see how this would make sense. If we want Miguel to fulfil his potential he'll have to be at least a number 2 to Sels and see some match time. Thrown in for the cup matches similar to how other Prem sides rotate.

Johnstone wouldn't come in to what could be his final transfer to be 3rd choice. If he did arrive Miguel would probably need to go on loan for a season.

I've always been of the mind that the homegrown youth keeper should be 3rd choice, and train with the more experienced keeper as much as possible.

The problem is if that "youth" keeper is under 21, they don't count towards the "homegrown" squad rota (because they're not old enough to be a named squad player).

I might be wrong, but I suspect that is why the likes of Heaton, Carson, Ruddy, etc are still hanging around as 3rd choices at the big clubs. The young keepers won't be developing either if they're 3rd choice.

Can someone share a link to show me where this has even been reported as I’ve not seen any concrete links to Johnstone

Can see this one happening. Not an exciting signing on the face of it, but the club obviously rate him.
