Lyle James Alfred Taylor

First Team Squad
Swann got 1 in 10 at Port Vale last season which doesn't hugely suggest he can do much for us. Maybe Larsson can, but would be asking a lot of either of them to come in right now and start scoring. Mighten or Johnson as false 9 type strikers might be the better bet.

I think if we are looking for a solution in house it would be Mighten.[/QUOTE}

He'll need to learn to show for the ball and stay on his feet then...
A big part of the problem currently is there is no-one up front to play off, if we did and we had another way of getting the ball out to the likes of Brennan further up the pitch we would start making loads of opportunities.

This team isn't good enough for "false" anything, other than Grabs dentures...

Must have stung he didnt get the call last night. Turned out to be another good call by the manager, Johnson looked a proper threat off the shoulder.

Hopefully the days of watching Taylor toil away for nothing up top are behind us.

Yes, particularly with the Barnsley high line, Johnson had them on toast several times.

Case in point for that chance across goal late on (and you'll have to forgive my atrocious MS Paint skills):

Look at Lyle's positioning and stance as the ball gets played in

Not only should he be far closer in between their #s 18 and 26, but he has all is weight going backwards!

Look at the difference between him and Yates - Ryan is clearly pushing forward against his marker whereas Lyle is almost statuesque

If he'd been in-between those two defenders and on the front foot (as a striker should be otherwise what's the point) he'd have had an easy tap in

This should be basic stuff for a striker

I play as a striker and in fairness he is dropping off the defender and getting space and wants a pass back. You could make an argument that Johnson should have played it back.

I wouldnt blame Taylor for that movement when there is so many other things you can have a go at him for. Whether its finish success rate, linking play, passing and holding the ball up.

Even if this were the case he's still in completely the wrong position though:

There are four players blocking the path of the ball from Johnson to Taylor. He needed to be a few metres further backward for the cut back to be on.

Like I said, whichever way you look at it he's in no man's land where he's positioned himself there.

Bang on. A midfielder should be running in towards the penalty spot in case of a cut back. Taylor should be getting in front of the man for a tap in.

Come on guys, let's stop giving him a hard time.

Granted, he's not got the tactical nouse of Grabban. He's not got the same first touch. He's not got the same movement.

But he gives you something as an impact sub. He's direct, physical, he gets into the right positions. He's got the right attitude.

Let's believe in all these players and what they can offer us under Cooper. They're all in it together. So are we. YOUUUUU REDSSSSSS!

Lyle was impeded by the particular demands placed on him by Chris Hughton as much as any other member of the squad, in so much that he's no more a conventional target-man than is Lewis Grabban. As he's demonstrated prior to his 2nd against Bristol, he thrives on balls dropping to him in and around the 6yd-box.

...And hes a finisher. Theres no doubt about it. Sure sometimes his positional sense is rubbish but I never doubted his finishing when (if) hes in the right place.
For me hes the sort of striker that could go on a scoring run....

If anything, Cooper will attempt to have us play to Taylor strengths rather than shoehorning him into some role under CH. I’m excited to see if he still offers us something more consistently.

Yates, Mighten and Taylor the biggest beneficiaries of the manager change as none of them will no longer be shoehorned into totally unsuitable roles.

All three have now had an impact within five games, and twoout of the three have only made sub appearances in those five.

Absolutely. Any striker will tell you that playing up top completely isolated is the toughest gig in town, add to that a complete lack of service and it's an impossible task. Grabban will give you a little bit more return because he's vastly experienced at this level but even he was finding it almost impossible.

Glad to see a rejuvenated Lyle with so much enthusiasm for the manager and right behind the team even when he hasn't played. I hope this has helped get the monkey off his back and the supporters get right behind him now.

Could be time for another about turn on a player, but that seems to be what Steve Cooper is building here.

First time Id heard anything from Taylor last night, he did come across as more than articulate, with an evident passion for what he's doing & who he's playing for.

Key contribution last night, for a guy who's been cast aside, his application levels are a credit to him & the manager who's bringing everyone together. have to say, I did question what he was doing when he ran back to the spot after the cool penalty finish. Id have taken the point.

Rest is history, fair play.

Always well spoken and articulate, very pleased for him last night, he deserved that moment. What a penalty taker aswell...

His reaction after the penalty says it all, he and the rest of the team raced back to kick off again. And we used the time added on because Bristol were wasting time when in the lead, to score the second.

Cooper has added a bit of zest to the team and the new confidence surely must be worth a goal start every game now.

Master Yates

A lot has made about how he’s got the biggest contract of his career here, at the highest level he’s played, like he will sit back and take the money.

But everything I’ve seen and heard from him tells me he is still incredibly hungry to succeed further. You don’t haul yourself up the divisions in your twenties unless you are extremely hungry.

I just felt Hughton was managing him wrong. Bowyer even said in public not too long ago that he needs an arm around the shoulder. Cooper seems to get it. I’m less worried about getting another striker in January now, because we are creating chances and Grabban and Taylor are more than good enough to finish them.

We can take our time trying to find the right long-term replacement for Grabbs, rather than desperately needing another body in January.
