January Sales

The manager said in the summer, and reiterated the other day, that he wants a squad of about 25.

I do think everyone loves each other.
It's more a case of players thinking no matter how hard they train and play they will not be given a chance, Bridcut v Newcastle is the best example. So eventually your head will drop and youl start looking for a move and stop caring about the club you are at.

Which is perfect imo, and means AK acknowledges we have a large squad.

He said 25 was his ideal. He wasn’t saying that 31 was a problem or in any way unusual.

It's not a huge squad, it's just very lopsided. We have 1 left back (which is 1 more than usual at least) but dozens of central midfielders. We have 3 strikers (excluding those in the youth team) but 4 senior keepers.

We need rebalancing otherwise a couple of key injuries in certain positions could really bugger us up.

All managers say they want a squad of 25; and then the Board steps in with a "better safe than sorry" logic and the managers eventually get a squad of more than 28.

And the boards are right: 25 is ridiculously low, especially for a league like the Championship.

What makes you think that Burke would regain his form if he came back?

Seems to me people want to buy the player we sold rather than the player he has become in seasons since his departure.
He's clearly not been able to adjust to life in Leipzig or get into the team at West Brom, who to be fair have Premierleague quality wingers.
He's got the pace but he's also got the power and direct running which is something that is lacking in our team unfortunately.

Just him coming back to the club alone would be an extra confidence lift for the fans. For him as well, he knows this club and if any team would encourage him to kick on, it would be us. I bet he'd jump at the chance.

Imagine you're a left back, it's the second half, your legs are tiring and you've got not just Darikwa to chase after but Burke as well. That's a short soiler for sure.

I think it will be a huge gamble if we brought Burke back. He's hardly kicked a ball in anger over the last two seasons.

People need to take off their rose tinted glasses and realise we'd be signing a lesser player than we sold.

It's looking more and more like Billy Davies MK1. IIRC, he had enough Central Midfields to stock a matchday squad.

I think everyone realises that. If he was still playing that well, he'd be in the PL.

It's more the potential upside. We've all seen what he can offer and if he gets anywhere close to that again, he absolutely transforms this side.

Is potential what we should be relying upon at the sharp end of the season?

I'd far rather we brought in proven signings rather than a still relatively young lad, who hasn't been able to make his mark higher up the league.

He had the potential to be devastating in a poor team, but he's failed to impose himself at both Leipzig and West Brom.

We should be aiming for better than that.

Why?

Has this ever happened before?

Does it soley rely of the biggest of ifs?

I'd like someone 'proven' as well. Just not sure how many of them are about, how much they'd cost and whether they'd sign for a Championship club.

Robinson at PNE? Watkins at Brentford? Could we get either of them?

On that basis, why would a Championship rival loan or sell us one of their players. If we were to bring someone in for that position I very much doubt it'll be someone plying their trade in the English football pyramid, far more likely that they will be from abroad.

It was gone over a million times in the summer, proven costs big money, then you consider after big money moves at this level not many "proven" players actually replicate their form.

A Grabban deal doesn't come up very often, and even when it does you have several other clubs going for him too.

People are bringing Burke up because there really isn't that many options to explore on these shores.

I think it depends on the quality/experience of the squad.

25 isn't ridiculously low if all 25 are seasoned professionals who are all good enough to command a starting berth. That's two players per position, plus three players who can cover multiple positions.

25 might be low if the composition is 14 first teamers, 5 backups and 6 players just promoted from the U23s.

Forest currently have a big squad for me because there's a number of players in the squad who are of sufficient quality they could realistically nail a starting slot in this league, but are currently nowhere near the starting lineup. That list includes: Smith, Hefele, Watson, Yates, Goncalves and Bridcutt. We could easily lose all six of those players without noticing.

We need to shed some weight in January as well as add players in a couple of key positions. Net transfers should be out rather than in.

WBA might sell Burke because it doesn't look as though he's in their immediate plans.

Perhaps we will go abroad, however I'd suggest that's every bit as risky as signing someone with 'potential', epecially mid-season.

I'd be completely happy with those happening.

Might be wrong, but I can’t see WBA taking a massive hit to sell Burke to one of their promotion rivals and I certainly wouldn’t be happy with us paying anything close to the 15m they paid for him.

More likely to see him going on loan to one of the weaker Championship squads or the SPL in January.

I think a loan would be most likely wherever he goes.

If Burke gets sold I could still see him getting a Prem move.

So much untapped potential, and for the fee WBA want, Prem teams can afford those kinds of risks/investments on someone who they'd probably give time in their system before chucking him in.

I would imagine it's gonna be like this for most, if not all players in this division in January. Clubs aren't gonna want to sell.

We are either gonna have to overpay, get a Prem reject or go abroad.

WBA won't loan him to us, or anyone else aiming for top six in this league.

They might sell him to us but a loan makes no sense whatsoever.
