It's certainly a concern that Clough struggles to even get off of the bench there Ravi.

He's either suffering a pretty serious crisis of confidence, or that period when he scored a few goals for Bolton that persuaded al-Hasawi to buy all of the agent's spin (not a particularly difficult task for any reasonably competent representative) was simply a one-off career high?

Or he's just crap

Thing is, can you honestly see Smith either being part of a team pushing for promotion or playing in the Premier League? He will either be a career backup/third choice or potentially get games on a more regular basis at a lower level. I'd put it to Smith and let him decide his fate.

None of our keepers will be good enough when we get promotion - at the end of next season, I believe. We'll need a damn good shot-stopper in the Premier, suspect much traffic would be heading his (or her - not to be sexist) way.

If we're to be serious about having a good go at staying up Aitor will need to go green jersey shopping. But no major hurry, by summer of 2020 will do.

Good thread Dizzy + replies to date.

It's all relative though.

Joking aside, I think it would be in both party's interests to part ways so he can become established at a club more at his level, which I would say is probably League One

The jury is still out on what might be his level. What isn't in doubt is what a huge waste of money he was. He's probably on relatively high wages too so will be difficult to offload him to a club at his level, other than on loan.

We don't even have a big squad. Just stop using Watson FOR f*** SAKES.

That's depends on your definition, we have a 31 man squad almost 3 players to every position, to me that is a big squad. Ideally (for me) you want a 22-25 man squad propped up with a few young hungry players mainly to keep a decent squad harmony.

We spent 2 million on him maybe, karanka can make him semi decent like fox?

More than £3m according to the post. Either way, if Karanka felt he could get anything out of him he’d still be here.

The average squad size in the Championship is 28.2. So larger than the average, but hardly a ‘big squad’ when we have less than 3 players more than would be expected in 2018.

Suppose it depends on how you justify what constitutes a first team sqaud, is it just those who have been given a squad number or those who have played? In reality some of those would include youth players who are there for support.

We do need to get rid of players though currently we have 4 goalkeepers for 1 position, 6 players fighting for the 1 true DM position (i wouldnt class Gued as a dm more a deeplying playmaker) we do sometimes have 2 true dms I know. The rest of the squad positions are not over subscribed except maybe winger 6 players for 2 slots but that depends how you see certain players true position (Soudani etc)

From the bbc

Championship side Nottingham Forest have signed striker Ross McCormack on loan from Aston Villa and Bolton forward Zach Clough for about £2.5m on a four-and-a-half-year contract.

Not a significant enough difference to argue about. Still an epic waste of money.

I agree the squad needs trimming but it’s pretty normal for this day and age. It’s misleading to describe it as big, as if it’s unusual.

What’s the average squad size when you exclude the parachute payment sides?

Even with the average side bing 28.2 I'd still argue ours is large, we have only 2 players that are "youth" in our squad of 31 i can imagine the other teams have 3-4 youth lads making the actual first team ready players 24-25 whereas we are at 29.

We are 4-5 players too heavy which is about 20-25%, again this is just my opinion. A tight not squad is much better for morale aswell.
