It isn't on that people are buying the ticket and not going just so they can reach the 14 mark. I get that they want to achieve it for themselves but it's simply denying other people the opportunity to go and completely selfish behaviour. There's thousands of us that would like to go to away games but we're completely locked out. If you can't go you can't go but don't deny others the opportunity just because you're a selfish prick.

That's why the club are bringing in the checks.
The email is explicit. Reproduced below:

At Sunday’s fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest’s records show that there were over 300 away tickets purchased but went unused. As demand for away tickets significantly outweighs supply, every unused ticket represents an empty seat that could have been filled by a supporter who is able to attend.

We are immensely proud of our loyal and passionate fanbase, whose unwavering support across the country plays a vital role in the team’s success on the road. It is well-recognised within the club that this level of backing significantly contributes to our competitiveness away from home. Therefore, a large number of empty seats not only potentially impacts the team’s performance but also denies other dedicated members the opportunity to attend.

Effective from the Chelsea fixture onwards, the club will be liaising with the host team. If a purchased ticket is not scanned for entry, the individual will not obtain the booking history, regardless of the reason for non-attendance.

We understand that unforeseen circumstances may prevent attendance, and we encourage supporters to return their tickets to the Ticket Office for a full refund should they no longer be able to attend. This ensures that tickets can be reallocated to other eligible members. Please be reminded that the unauthorised resale or transfer of tickets outside the official process is a breach of the club’s T&C’s and may result in sanctions as outlined in our policy.

Furthermore, we urge members to apply for the ballot only if they genuinely intend to attend the fixture, should they be successful.

Nottingham Forest deeply appreciates your committed and vocal support, which positively influences the team’s performance. This reminder aims to ensure that our away sections remain full at Premier League matches and that our dedicated members are given the best possible chance to attend fixtures throughout the season.

I've only entered the ballot for 2 games. I couldn't make the other 2 so didn't bother. is the correct procedure?
Should I have entered but not purchased if successful or purchased and not attended?

Of course it's entirely possible that a few members are buying the tickets with no intention of going to the games to meet either the three-game or fourteen-game thresholds, but personally I think the club have been incredibly arrogant in levelling this accusation at the away members without being in full possession of the facts first, because I strongly suspect that the bulk of these empty seats are more likely to be accounted for by the tickets they give away to the players and corporate sponsors - and they've never been transparent as to how much of the allocation this accounts for whilst asking for our money to be in with a chance of procuring tickets.

I also think it demonstrates how out of touch they've become regarding pricing over the last two years that they think we can afford to just casually throw away £30 like that, because many of us can't. That email has properly p***ed me off (though the club have been chipping away at my goodwill in various ways since we got promoted anyway), and has diminished my earlier enthusiasm for tomorrow's game a bit to be honest.

Not sure how this all sits with Data Protection but the club must be sure that its ok.

I'm not sure about the PL but in the EFL, some supporters purchased tickets for games like Blackburn with no intention of going, just to gain the loyalty point.

I noticed the odd seat near us that was empty but nothing like 300.

You followed both the rules and have acted in the spirit of the procedure.
The club is saying not everybody has done this
The rules are being tightened to give those who genuinley want to go to away games the opportunity.
That said, Brighton and Southampton are likely to be the two least demanded fixtures this season, meaning that they were less likely to attract folk buying tickets with no intention to attend

There might be a perfectly legitimate reason for non-attendance, life sometimes throws something unexpected at you and plans have to change quickly
While this is true for every legitimate reason there will unfortunately be several others that will make this excuse up. 5hey have to bulletproof it for the weasels in society.

Forest forced people into doing that because people are frightened of not getting the minimum three tickets. If they get rid of that requirement people will only apply for games they genuinely intend to go to.

Lads and Ladies, a little help for someone who hasn't been to the City Ground in a while.

Do I need a print out of my ticket or can I use my phone to scan?

I was at Brighton and it didn't feel like there were many empty seats, although I do know some people in the 400, who buy a ticket and don't go to the game or they'll pass it on, so they retain their loyalty points.

Use your phone mate. Add it too your Google pay or apple pay wallet. I've used it ever since it's been an option and never had a single issue.

The club specifically used the wording 'purchased' which I think should rule out player and corporate comps.

Most scan from their phone. That’s what I do, although managed to leave my phone in the car once. Fortunately I wasn’t too far from it when I remembered.

Thanks for the quick replies. Always great help here.

I was a little confused because the tickets I have do have the QR codes but says something like DO Not Attempt to Scan Your Ticket From Your Phone - or something like that.

A bit confusing.

I agree, just offering another point that I hadn't seen raised. It's rare that I post anything sensible, thought I'd give it a go!

I doubt the ticket office keep a record of which seat they allocate to each client reference number for each game though; when we used to be able to collect away tickets there were times when they'd just tear the required number of tickets off a big pile of them if they hadn't sorted and enveloped them all up yet, without making a note of the seat number. I'd be surprised if Brighton just handed over the specific seat details on the hop too.

I'd like some transparency from the club about the size of the corporate ticket allocation - and how many of them actually get used each game - before they start levelling accusations at us.

The club set it to work that way so they shouldn't be surprised that that's what happened.

On the plus side today's email would suggest that it's not just about the money for them.

However it still stings that I get a threatening email having fought through the weather to get to Brighton and back (on a Sunday, for 2pm, for a game on TV) and then a couple of days later got an unsuccessful email from the ballot for Leicester.

To echo @benj360 above, I'd really love to know how many ballot tickets were actually available to members for Liverpool and Leicester v Southampton and Brighton.

They use a tracked QR code on tickets.

If you scan the paper QR code with your phone, it has the same effect on the tracking system as scanning it at the turnstiles - the code is registered as having been scanned, even though it wasn't scanned by the turnstile, it was scanned by you at the kitchen table.

The upshot of such a code being scanned is that it is then immediately invalidated on the system _as if it had been scanned at the turnstile_ which means the next time it gets scanned it comes up as "already used", but this would be you at the turnstile..

You wouldn't be able to scan with your phone anyway as you wouldn't have any compatible apps.
