The Relegation Dogfight 24/25

Feels like this weekends results have just about turned this into a 4 horse survival of the fittest.

Losing to Southampton was a crushing blow to Ipswich with Wolves winning though, I'd lump fairly big on the promoted trio to go straight back down now.

If Ipswich don't sign a competent goalkeeper before tomorrow's deadline, they are done. Not a chance they are staying up with that clown Muric in goal.
Totally agree, he has cost them so many points - If Sels were playing for them I honestly belive they would be safe. Muric is same level as Vlad and Turner, and we would have gone down with them in our side. I hope they get a keeper sorted as woudl prefer Wolves to go down and we can buy Cunha at price. Doubt they can afford to keep him if they go down, and he is bound to have put a clause in that new contract saying he can move if relegated.

The reports say that Cunha has a 62.5m release clause that kicks in this summer. So clubs will be lining up to sign him at that price. He's going to get to pick and choose, and Wolves won't get a say in the matter regardless of what league they're in.

Looking increasingly like the promoted three will be the ones back down the trapdoor. Wolves have just about enough to see them through, and as much as I'd like Everton to get relegated, I think Moyes will pull them clear of it.

If Everton & West Ham win their game in hand they go above both Utd & Spurs. After Spurs there's an 10pt difference which none of the bottom three will make up.

Everton aren't near it already after 3 games or so with Moyes in charge.

It's between the last four only and I agree about Wolves, they have a much better team and have made the correct managerial change so will be ok

Didn't realise they were almost 10 points in front of Leicester. Ok, no chance of Everton going down then!

Nothing has changed my mind since summer to think the promoted three would go down.

Ultimately quality tells. Wolves flirting with relegation was just that, I think O'Neill would have dragged them clear as well because pound for pound the likes of Cunha, Sarabia, Lemina, Alt-Nouri, Larsen etc together are just simply miles better than anything Leicester, Ipswich or Southampton can put out, even if the latter have a couple of individually really good players like Delap and Dibbing.

Southampton persisting with Martin, Leicester sacking Cooper and Ipswich not getting a better GK than Muric were just them signing their own death warrants too. So much ego in each of those decisions.

All mind-boggling decisions. They'd still have been favourites to go down either way, but they really don't help themselves with calamitous decisions like those.

I don't see any of these sides reaching 30 points, never mind having a shot at staying up.

Leicester & Southampton were always going to go down, Ipswich were the wildcard with McKenna but he has really flattered to deceive. He’s spent loads of money, continually threw points away & you listen to his presser post Southampton & he’s so uninspiring.

Should have taken the multiple jobs he was offered in the summer.

I think Leicester had a chance if they kept Cooper, history proves he could have done it. Just look at their results since he left...
Yep for some reason replacing someone who had history of dealing, and succeeding with keeping a team up with someone who's never been in a relegation battle in his life hasn't worked out. Who'd have thought?

FWIW I think Coops would have also gone down with them, but it would have been closer.

From our lofty position I have to agree with most of the points above. The bottom four look nailed on and with Wolves of that four looking to have a manager and players capable of pulling clear, the result is now almost certain.

I reckon Everton and West ham probably almost have enough points already. Still 14 games to go, but for the struggling clubs, time is already fast running out.

Kind of glad they booted Cooper when they did - it'll have only enhanced his reputation given how horrifically wrong things have gone since he left.

If they'd have stuck with him all season and narrowly gone down, they'll have pinned it all on him. The way things have panned out, the delusions of their fanbase/players have been ruthlessly exposed in the most hilarious manner possible.

Before we returned to the top flight I didn’t realize how big the quality gap was between the championship and the premier league . The current system is so biased in favour of the established teams that survival is virtually impossible. I believe that that relegation will be a thing of the past. With so many American owners I think they will mimic the US format for sport. This would not be my hope for the future but I think it is the likely outcome.

It’s an obvious point, but having a decent goalkeeper is crucial if you’re battling relegation. Meslier and Ward were big reasons why Leeds and Leicester went down two seasons ago, rather than us (Navas) and Everton (Pickford). I’m amazed that a big spending club like Ipswich didn’t start the season with a much better keeper

Not sure any of the 6 scrambling to get promoted from the Championship look any better than Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton. Makes ours, Fulham and Bournemouth's feat of staying up look miraculous. :D

It’ll be interesting to see how whichever teams go down get on. Over the past couple of years, Sheffield United, Southampton and Burnley have looked hopeless in the Prem but then looked good in the Champo.

They probably joined the queue of people thinking Muric was capable and adequate for the PL.

People will still look at him coming through at City and being an international keeper and think he would do without actually seeing him play.

It’s also important at the top as well-I reckon the signing of Peter Shilton in 1977 was the icing on the cake
to enable us to win the league.I don’t think we would have won it with John Middleton (R.I.P.) in goal.

I really can't understand the approach they've taken to recruitment in defence. They're backline is mainly players who have only ever played outside the PL.

We came up thinking our back 3 of McKenna, Cook and Worrall was the only part of our team PL readyish, but quickly realised this wasn't the case. Then came exp. pros at the top level in Boly and then later Felipe who saved our season really. Unbelievable to me they haven't prioritised bringing players of a similar ilk, and continue to have such little exp. at the back. It's not even like an older defender is necessarily even expensive to recruit, bar a short-term contract.

Heck, if I were Ipswich I would've been asking about Boly to see if he can repeat the trick.
