Botafogo have won their first Copa Libertadores, defeating Atletico Mineiro 3-1 in a wild match at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires after going down to 10 men in the first minute.
They also took a big step to winning the Brasileirao Serie A this past week winning at Palmeiras 1-3. Their difficult road to the trophy continues this coming Wednesday as they travel to Porto Alegre to take on 3rd placed Internacional.
I really enjoyed the match, it had pretty much everything you’d expect from South American football!

MLS playoffs have reached the final stage. #7 seed NY Red Bulls have inexplicably made the final beating Orlando City 0-1. Out west, LA Galaxy got by Seattle Sounders 1-0. They are the #2 seed. The final will be played next Saturday in LA or whatever suburb or theme park Galaxy happen to play in. I know that the travel involved in the US/Canada almost makes it necessary to adopt the American-style 2 conference set up but do we really need to hand out trophies to the East winner and the West winner. The wackiness of the playoffs made no sense with the 1st round being best-of-three and everything else straight knockout. Anyway, the league got what they want, it's LA vs NY the 2 largest media markets. Doubt I'll watch as the machine has yet to be invented that can measure my indifference to the league.

In Brazil, Botafogo won 0-1 at Internacional this week. They now lead Serie A by 3 points ahead of Palmeiras heading into the final matchday on Sunday. Palmeiras are on +28 GD and Botafogo are on +29. Botafogo are home to 6th placed Sao Paulo (who Botafogo beat on penalties in the Libertadores QF) and are hoping to shed the "Bottle-fogo" reputation of losing out on trophies at the last hurdle. A point would give them the Libertadores/Brasileirao Serie A double. Palmeiras are at home to Fluminense who sit just 2 points above the relegation zone. Should be interesting.

The Uruguayan season has concluded and Penarol have won the Liga Profesional de Primera title. It is their 52nd.
The league is played over several competitions: Apertura, Torneo Intermedio and Clausura. The Apertura and Clausura winners meet in a championship final but the final was unnecessary this season because Penarol won both tournaments. Places for South American competitions are determined by an aggregate table of all 3 tournaments. Those places are, Libertadores: Penarol, Nacional, Boston River and Defensor Sporting. Copa Sudamericana: Cerro Largo, Danubio, Racing and Montevideo Wanderers.
In the Copa Uruguay, Defensor Sporting defeated Nacional 2-2, 3-1 on pens.
Mad bastards, the lot of them.
Relegation is based on a 2-year average of points per game. Rampla Juniors, Deportivo Maldonado and Fenix were relegated.
Plaza Colonia and Montevideo City Torque (won playoff with Uru. Montevideo because they were even on points) were promoted from Segunda Division with Juventud and Uruguay Montevideo contesting the promotion playoff on 8 and 12 Dec.
Over-complicated, yes, but that is the way in South America.

Botafogo have won the Brasileirao Serie A beating Sao Paulo 2-1. Needing just a point to clinch the title, they won while 2nd placed Palmeiras lost at home to relegation-threatened Fluminense 0-1.

It capped off a phenomenal season for Botafogo who won the Copa Libertadores & Brasileirao Serie A double. They will be joined in next season's Libertadores by Palmeiras, Flamengo and Fortaleza plus Internacional & Sao Paulo in the qualifying rounds.

Corinthians, Bahia, Cruzeiro, Vasco da Gama, Vitoria and Atletico Mineiro qualify for the Copa Sudamericana.

Relegated clubs are: Athletico Paranaense, Criciuma, Atletico GO and Cuiaba.

Promoted from Serie B are: Santos, Mirassol, Sport Recife and Ceara.

Central Cordoba won the Argentine Cup beating Velez Sarsfield 1-0. Velez were looking to do the double as they currently lead the Liga Profesional on goal difference over Talleres with one match to play on Sunday.

Velez Sarsfield won the Liga Profesional de Futbol Argentina beating Huracan 2-0 while Talleres lost to Newell's Old Boys 1-3. The job Talleres had ahead of them was very tough as heading into the final day they had a +5 GD while Velez was at +20.
Along with Velez, Talleres, River Plate, Boca Juniors qualify for the Libertadores next season along with Racing (Copa Sudamericana winners), Estudiantes (for winning the Copa de la Liga Profesional) and Central Cordoba (for winning the Copa Argentina).
Qualifying for the Copa Sudamericana are: Godoy Cruz, Huracan, Independiente, Union, Lanus and Defensa y Justicia.
There will be no relegation this season due to legal issues that are holding up the rulings of the AFA. As usual, it's crazy in Argentina.

Thanks for all these updates BuckeyeRed. Couldn’t help but notice Santos are now back in Serie A, I hadn’t realised they had been relegated in recent years. Some serious talent has come out of that club over the years!

Thanks Coops.
Yeah, Santos were relegated last season for the 1st time in their history (111 years). They were promoted this year at the first time of asking. They hired their old manager Fabio Carille to take over this season and he got them to the Paulista (Sao Paulo state league) final and won the Serie B but was inexplicably sacked with one game remaining this season after promotion was clinched. You are right about the talent that the club has produced over the years. Amazing.
