Copa America has reached the semifinals. Plenty of stories involved but I'll start with the US exit. In an easy group, they started with a 2-0 win vs a totally inept Bolivia side then lost 2-1 to Panama after an idiotic red card by Tim Weah. Then they didn't qualify for the knockout rounds after losing to a very good Uruguay team. Gregg Berhalter should be sacked for his lack of tactical nous and never making adjustments but the real culprits are the US federation (USSF). A team of spider monkeys hurling their feces in the air would be more productive than the leadership of USSF. What an inept clown show. But I digress.
The tournament thus far has seen shocking refereeing and an indescribable lack of technology. No goal line technology and an outdated VAR system compared to the Euros. Also, if scores are level after 90 minutes, they go straight to the penalties, no extra time, except in the final.
In the quarterfinals, Argentina beat a stubborn Ecuador squad 1-1 and 4-2 on pens. Canada got by Venezuela 1-1 and 4-3 on pens. Colombia dismantled Panama 5-0 to extend their unbeaten run to 27 and in what more resembled a street brawl than a game of football, Uruguay 0-0 Brazil, Uruguay go through 4-2 on penalties.
So the semifinals are set:
Tue 9 July-Argentina - Canada in East Rutherford, New Jersey
Wed 10 July-Uruguay - Colombia in Charlotte, N. Carolina

The final of Copa America is set. Argentina beat a stubborn Canada side 2-0 and will play Colombia in Miami on Sunday. "Los Cafeteros" beat Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay 1-0 in a game that had all the elements of a typical South American game: red card, embellishing fouls and even a brawl afterward. Colombia took the lead when James Rodriguez floated in a corner for Jefferson Lerma to head home. In the 45' Colombia saw Daniel Munoz sent off for a stupid elbow when already on a yellow. James has been the player of the tournament for me with a goal and 6 assists. He has struggled to get a game at Flamengo but after getting some counseling has resurrected his career with the national team. Darwin Nunez continues to be an enigma for Uruguay. His running off the ball is so good and he gets himself in great positions but just can't consistently finish.
Should be a great final with the usual drama but if Argentina underestimate Colombia they do so at their peril. Colombia are on a 28 game unbeaten run and are absolute battlers.

Unfortunately, Colombia lost the final. They are a people who deserve a lot of joy.

Yeah agree. This side were underrated by everyone in the media. They gave Argentina all they wanted. the goal by Lautauro Martinez, while well taken, was a bit lucky as it went through the Colombian keeper's hands (at high velocity) and on another day would probably have been saved. "Los Cafeteros" fought hard and are very much on Argentina's level.

Today they play the best football in South America, the only flaw in the squad is that there is a lack of better players in reserve, to come in and maintain the level of performance.

The 1st legs of the Copa Libertadores semifinals both finished with emphatic wins for the home sides. Botafogo, trying to reach their first Copa Lib final, beat Penarol 5-0 and Atletico Mineiro also beat River Plate 3-0.

*Atletico's neighbors and arch-rivals Cruzeiro are in the semis of the Copa Sudamericana.
*River Plate have extra incentive to reach the final as it will be played in their home stadium.
*Amazing that with their storied history, Botafogo are trying to reach their first final.

Cruzeiro looked very good…River Plate not so much. I didn’t catch the other SF.

MLS Playoffs have begun. Play-in games between the 8 and 9 seeds are complete. Atlanta United beat Montreal 2-2 (4-3 penalties) and Vancouver beat Portland Timbers 5-0.
Round of 16 is, ridiculously, a best of 3 series. The rest of the tournament will be single game knockout.
Inter Miami - Atlanta
Orlando City - Charlotte
Columbus Crew - NY Red Bulls
FC Cincinnati - NY City FC
LA Galaxy - Colorado Rapids
Real Salt Lake - Minnesota United
Seattle Sounders - Houston Dynamo
LAFC - Vancouver Whitecaps

Best of three series? LOL. Why do Los Americanos think they have to tweak everything? And, since everyone has been waiting for the announcement with bated breath, it should be noted Calgary Canada's Drew Fischer has been voted MLS referee of the year. Probably deservedly so (I can't say as I rarely watch MLS, but Drew is a good referee). BY and large MLS refs are awful.

Yeah, I agree. It was fine using aggregate goals but some marketing guru at MLS thought let's Americanize it. It's so stupid and they wonder why their playoffs get drawn out until December. This round alone takes 15 days.
Like you, I don't watch much MLS. They've got their big payday from Apple but now their games are behind a paywall so people discovering the game can't or won't pay to watch. This is no way to grow the game.

MLS playoffs have reached the quarterfinal stage. After a drawn-out round of 16, the seeds in the east have been decimated.
Supporters Shield winners and FIFA darlings Inter Miami were defeated 2 games to 1 by Atlanta.
Orlando got by Charlotte on penalties in game 3.
2 seed and holders Columbus Crew were beaten by NY Red Bull on penalties 2-2 (5-4).
3 seed Cincinnati were beaten at home by New York City in game 3, 0-0 (5-6).
In the west, 2 seed LA Galaxy beat Colorado Rapids over 2 games 5-0 and 1-4.
Minnesota beat Salt Lake winning both on penalties.
4 seed Seattle beat Houston Dynamo and manager Ben Olsen winning both on penalties.
1 seed LAFC beat Vancouver Whitecaps over 3 games.
So, the quarterfinals (or Conference semifinals if you will) in single game knockouts are:
Eastern Conference (seeds in parentheses)
(4) Orlando City - Atlanta United (9)
(6) NYCFC - NY Red Bulls (7)
Western Conference
(2) LA Galaxy - Minnesota United (6)
(1) LAFC - Seattle Sounders (4)
ties to be played 23 and 24 Nov
Conference finals to be played 30 Nov and 1 Dec
Final 7 Dec

Botafogo have won their first Copa Libertadores, defeating Atletico Mineiro 3-1 in a wild match at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires after going down to 10 men in the first minute.
They also took a big step to winning the Brasileirao Serie A this past week winning at Palmeiras 1-3. Their difficult road to the trophy continues this coming Wednesday as they travel to Porto Alegre to take on 3rd placed Internacional.
