So out of boredom and because someone I know but don't like said Cooper is overrated as we've spent enough to be comfortably mid table and "it isn't exactly hard to establish yourself in the prem" I decided to have a quick look at how hard it seems to be, looking at last 10 years
For the record I still think it's insane this is even a debate for a side 23 years out the prem and in their second season (last year "doing a Fulham" this year "second season syndrome") especially when we are just three point away from literally being mid table and in the same position as a side who have spent billions to sit in 10th which is apparently so good the BBC has two different articles up about their improvement today...
but
Last 10 years here are the sides who have got promoted and where they are now
Obviously it doesn't tell the full story, I'd say Villa and Newcastle aren't exactly typical promoted sides but that can obviously be argued.
But out of thirty promoted sides three are in the top half of the premier league, take out Villa and Newcastle and just one. Of the more "normal" promoted sides in the last ten years you could argue only three seem to have established themselves as "mid table premier league sides" but then you have the likes of Leicester that show you can go beyond that, win the whole thing, win the FA Cup, finish 5th twice...yet still go down
I know this is boring and doesn't say too much, but I thought it was nice to show some perspective. If I'd gone further back just a few more seasons you'd see likes of Cardiff and Hull again, Reading in League One, QPR again, Norwich again, Swansea, Blackpool in League One, WBA again, Birmingham etc.
As much as PREMIER LEAGUE MONEY sounds good we are competing against other sides with that money and who have had that money for many more years than us. Chances are much more likely we'll get relegated than establish ourselves so when we are currently much closer to the top half than relegation I feel that should be seen as a positive
