I'll definitely blow my own trumpet here, as well as others.

Plenty of us said from day 1 that when you have the attitude which Yates does, the sky is the limit. MON spotted that right out of the block, and deserves huge credit for giving Yates his debut. Had we a fanny manager like McClaren here, we could have walked a different path entirely.

Yates is a first team player.

There were some quite bad tempered exchanges on here and lots of laughing at me for suggesting Yates starts over O'Brien. Don't remember or care who it was but its nice to feel like i was on the right side for once!

I wish he had just 10% more composure in those goal scoring situations. The header vs Palace, shot 4 yards out vs Leicester - everything else about his game has come on so much but he has to start putting those chances away. He gets himself in the situations regularly - he could be a 5-10 goals a season CM if he just converted more.

It's the only thing missing from his game now - these chances from set pieces. He always gets on the end of them.

Roy Keane doesn't throw around the term 'proper midfielder' around willy nilly (Boly)... He was right too.
I have posted it before in this very thread (probably after a few Weißbiers) but I can see elements of Roy‘s game in young Yatesy. The Forest Captain could go on to emulate the former Ireland and Forest great, I think he’s got that potential.

You don‘t get Roy Keane praising you unless you are very, very, good with bags of potential - and for me, thats the key, I am not sure Yatesy has even reached anywhere near his ceiling as yet.

What a player, and what a man.

If you came home and found young Ryan in bed with your wife, you’d tuck him in and nip downstairs and put the coffee on.

And then look for new beds.

We have to remember when MON and RK were at the club although this was only for a few months, one of the things they did was get RY back from loan and put him in the team. Aside from a slight blip under Hughton, we have since then, missed out on the playoffs on the last day, got promoted, stayed up twice and are in the top half of the PL. Yates has been in the side for pretty much all of that.

Him being ManU for most of his career means Keane isn't admired as much as he should be (plus the whole thing with Erling's dad) but in reality he was a generational talent in one of the most successful club sides in England ever. And he was a key part of it in the position Ryan plays.

For RK to pop out at the start of his Forest career and single out RY for praise when he was by no means an established player said a lot at the time and still does.

I don't think Yates will be winning CL medals and PLs for most of his career as he's now in his mid/late 20s but there's no reason why he probably shouldn't be a PL player for the next few years.

I am going to quote this, purely so when Ryan Yates lifts Nottingham Forest‘s third European Cup, I can come back here and say „HA-HA!“

Or something.

It really would be nice.

But, even breaking into the PL cartel is nigh on impossible. Spurs aren't really in it, and City have only been successful recently and most of that is due to being owned by Middle East investors and also being able to attract Pep. Even they don't manage to win the CL every year. In the PL we have the likes of Brighton, Newcastle and Villa all of whom came up a long while before us and are still trying to get into Euro places consistently. West Ham managed this a bit under Moyes but didn't get the consistency. So it's hard even to do that. Leicester won the PL once when everyone else had a bad year but then couldn't build on it because the progression is brutal.

On current trajectory we will probably be challenging for European places in the next 3-5 years. But winning things? And how old will Yates be then?

I'd love this to be wrong of course, but time is the main factor which is not on our side. If Ryan went to Arsenal, he'd add a lot of steel to that midfield and there wouldn't be so much of the soft underbelly (admittedly Arteta has done well to improve that).

My hero is Stuart Pearce-not the most talented or gifted player but my word he maximised the qualities he did have and not sounding too deep, but I have taken some of these values into my own life. Yates is like the modern day Pearce regarding this! Totally maximises the things he can do-and sheer hard work commitment and self belief he is smashing every challenge that is in front of this. He does it all with smile, glint in his eye.

Pearce was a very gifted player
Some of the one two's he used to do with Clough are next level
His free kick taking was some of the best
Look at how he used to play - He was exceptional at one touch football

FFS he scored 89 goals? for us

A effing left back

I've only seen two better left backs in my life time

Roberto Carlos

And without doubt the best ever Paolo Cesare Maldini - the rest do not even come close and that is including Pearce and Carlos

Still can't work out how he missed that one. Takes some effort to clear the bar from there 🤣
To use a golfing metaphor, he pulled the wrong club out the bag.
