We're physically and mentally shot, we don't have real strength in depth and the best managers are working out how to play against us?

I hope not and that we can bounce back to get over the line. We deserve to after this season.
We're not a bad team overnight.

9 days until the next game, time to take stock and rebuild confidence.

The only good thing about this afternoon was the magnificent Forza display.

For the second season running we got embroiled in an awful home game with Everton and emerged with nothing.
I’m afraid the players looked tired after a long season and our lack of quality in depth is starting to show.

We’ve had a great season though and let’s hope for a final massive effort in the remaining 6 league games and the FA Cup.

We were essentially playing with 10 men with Wood and then 9 men when Elanga came on as neither looked anywhere near match fitness. I get wanting Wood back and everything but we'd have been better putting Yates up there! That's not Wood's fault as I bet he's being injected up to the eyeballs just to get onto the park but there was no real point to him being out there today.

The lack of depth compared to our rivals is really telling now, we're running on fumes while they're seemingly getting stronger.

I just do not understand that game in the slightest. It was similar to United in many ways, especially the apparent obsession with booting it long. I said to the bloke stood next to me that all Forest did today was play to Everton’s strengths, it was baffling to see us boot it time and time again onto the heads of Tarkowski, Branthwaite and O’Neill. If Everton could have hand picked our tactics they would have been exactly what we did today, I just cannot fathom what Nuno was thinking. Playing Wood was a bit desperate, he was miles off it. Moreno had a shocker. Not playing Ryan Yates against Everton of all teams seemed like a very odd choice. We gave Pickford one of his easiest afternoons of the season, surely. I hope this can be turned around because that looked like mental fatigue, we have to get ourselves right for Spurs and pick up those 3 needed wins from 6 games.

Everton were full value for their win, thoroughly deserved. They are nasty spoilers but they play to their strengths and know what they are. Sadly today we chose to play to their strengths as well and got what we deserved.

Just back after a night out in the city after a very disappointing game. A ragged performance from start to finish and hard to find anything positive to salvage from the game. So sloppy in giving the ball away, a lack of movement or control & we were fortunate to only lose by one goal. After such a poor showing it really did look like we were somehow going to hang on to a point, but just one mistake too many. The positive thing is that is still very much in our hands and it’s the same players who’ve taken us to third in the table and kept us there for the best part of four months. If we’re this disappointing, how must the players and Nuno feel? Let’s hope that we can get over this and re-apply ourselves. We still have an easier run-in that most of our competitors and we’re still ahead of them in the table.

Surprised by the general reaction.

Yes we played badly but it's not terminal and we've got a great chance of finishing top five still.

Keep the faith.

Will be very difficult but Forest fans have that trauma inside them of failures in the recent past.

Marinakis has been trying to create something very different.

A family feeling and winning mentality. Let's see if it'll get this lot over the line.

If so, it could be the turning point.

We would've won this game if CHO had put away what was, for him, a pretty easy chance.
Instead he shoots straight at the keeper.

That gnawing knot in the stomach when you lose in the last minute is starting to fade now and to console myself I read through some of our previous seasons' match reactions. Yes we were poor today but this has only happened now and then this season, previously it was almost every game. The lads need to rest, reflect and then get out there and earn what they want. Whatever we end up with, we'll deserve and the team and the fans, will need to own it.
Even when we're s*it I love this team of ours.. You Reds!

If Newcastle win their 2 games in hand, they go to 59 points and 3rd place.
If we don’t beat Spurs , resurgent City an in form Chelsea win, we drop to 6th.
Beat Spurs on Easter Monday and we hold off City and Chelsea, and the Champions’ League dream is back on.
Hence my comment post-match that our season is on a knife-edge.

Great summary.

I'm just hoping that some of the opposition we play in the final run-in are as leggy and out of sorts as we were yesterday.

Great post.

The Yates thing has been bugging me for weeks. He's one of our talismans, he's 100% all-in, he's got the energy and in physical games he's a must.

We've a lot of issues which Nuno is dealing with admirably, but choosing to leave Yates out in games like yesterday just seems odd. I get Nuno likes him as an option to pressure the opposition late on with an injection of energy then, but yesterday was a game we needed him there for the full grind.

I’d have subbed Yates in at half time although I’m still not sure we’d have managed to create anything and score.

Something was definitely ’off’. For every player to have had a mare of a game.

At least wood got 90 mins under his belt and now has 9 days to recover. Had he not played he’d have gone nearly a month without any minutes in his legs.

Fully fit first eleven and we are a top eight or nine team, possibly higher.
With no Aina the defensive balance was out and Moreno was poor, Wood was dominated by their defenders and didn't look fit, and Elanga was no threat. Needed Yates on from the start in a game like that.
Also not fully understanding the tactics early on, with Jota playing off Wood upfront and leaving our right side wide open.
But we are still third and going to Wembley so lets move on

We're a specialist team.
We normally face passing, possession teams.
Yesterday we came up against different tactics, more physical play, and its been very rare this season. Long balls from GKs are pretty much limited to Forest and Everton in the PL.
Maybe our whole tactical setup just doesn't work against this.

Maybe that's wishful thinking, but it doesn't necessarily mean we're bad now.

The less said about that poor performance the better.

However, I want to give a shout out to the guy who I met on the train back to London (from Newark). His first game at the City Ground in 28 years. Lives in California now and was over on a business trip so extended his stay to be able to go. The result wasn't great for his return, but hearing his stories of finally coming back was heart-warming. We had a really good chat about the match, the club and the recent seasons. Told him not to leave it 28 years to come back again.

It's hearing stories like what he was telling me just reminds you that once it's in your blood, no matter where you are in the world, the Garibaldi still runs deep.

I didn't see yesterday. But I have said for a while that we don't seem to have a plan for a team who basically sits back and lets us ask the questions. We are - as plenty have said recently - much better without the ball than with it, and are happy to soak up the pressure and let the defence defend whilst we leave the likes of Wood, Elanga, CHO, MGW up the pitch as outlets for when we do manage to clear and hit sides on the counter. When we have the opportunity to create and not be on the counter, it doesn't seem to happen as well.

I guess the cup matches against Ipswich and Exeter were a good example of this because (even accounting for the fact that whilst results do mean we are, squad wise and in terms of multiple tactical plans we are not the third best side in the country) they largely allowed us to try and create and kept it tight at the back.

Moyes isn't stupid, there is a reason why Ferguson wanted him to come to United, and why he did so well in 2 spells at West Ham. He would have noticed not to give too much away against us. I'm surprised others haven't done the same.

They obviously work a lot on where the second balls will go. Every loose ball lumped forward. Every header front or back they had two or three players ready for the loose ball. We didn't adapt in any way. Just kept losing the second balls for 95 minutes.

Ugly football but it'll work enough for them to be midtable.
At the very least.
I did think previously that out of the Man Utd, Villa and Everton games, this would be the most difficult fixture, particularly with Moyes now being Everton manager.
