On Saturday we handled the midfield battle with just Yates on his own for the second half, I’m sure we will be fine with Danilo and Sangare if everyone’s switched on.

I just mean it feels experimental. I can't imagine we've fielded such an attacking-minded side before. But folk who wanted Cooper out did want us to play more on the front foot, so perhaps we'll get to see if we have the quality to take it to them. Will be an interesting few hours.

Apologies, I read it in a different way.

I guess Nuno has a bit of a free hit for the next couple of games and I'd imagine if we can get to a point of Sangare looking like the player he could be and being able to sacrifice a CM to play on the front foot and get MGW into that three (rather than three and MGW Infront) then that makes us a much more progressive proposition

Don't like the lineup. Dropped the form player and the player of the year, not addressed the obvious weakness in the middle of the defence.
He's managing the squad in a tough, short period of games, and particularly after having to expend so much more energy due to the circumstances on Saturday. Some minor knocks could have been picked-up too.

Anyway, what happened to the cautious, defensive-minded NES?

On Saturday we handled the midfield battle with just Yates on his own for the second half, I’m sure we will be fine with Danilo and Sangare if everyone’s switched on.
And it's much easier to handle that battle if you are 15 yards further up the pitch and when you get in possession you have multiple options to retain it.

Our midfield has struggled largely as it's been sat in the back 4/5 and with no outlets.

Big day for Danilo too - unless I've got the shape wrong we appear to be playing him deeper, which is where he made his name.

I thought he looked ok when he came on v Tottenham (was it?) but I read from a couple of posters they thought he was poor. We'll need him and Sangare at their best today.

I think its just a stupid selection and one that could easily get torn apart. You could possibly pick this team at home against bottom of the league but not away at Newcastle FFS. I can only assume he sees this as a loss so may as well rest people for Saturday and just go for it.

I also hope Nuno has had his arm around Turners shoulder and told him he is his number one. If he's confident he's adequate (at least until we identify someone better to come in)

Where do you find these stats on Niakhate captain?

I feel nervous about him too, like a mistake is never far away. I think he’d be a good CB for a team that attacks a lot and defending is less frequent.

But for a team which sits back a lot and is expected to soak up a lot of pressure I don’t think the concentration or composure is there from him.
I can't remember where I saw the stats... a mate sent me a link which I have since deleted.
I see he is preferred to Felipe today.

I’m very happy with that lineup. For the only fact every player is playing in their proper position. 4-2-3-1 is the best formation for our team. Especially if we want the best out of wood and MGW. I’ve obviously got no problem with dropping Yates. We lose with him and we lose without him. I don’t think the future is Yates cause he is extremely limited as a footballer. Obviously it won’t look good today if sangare and Danilo don’t work hard. However working hard is the absolutely minimum we should expect from players. It’s a shame we have to play Yates just to show others how to work hard.

A very attacking formation by Nuno; I doubt a midfield of Sangaré and Danilo is sufficient and tactically disciplined enough, for such an opponent.
I think he will start off with a flat back 4, then a 3, then MGW behind a 2 of Wood and CHO.
And i think he will change it pretty quickly as we will be over-run:
Turner
Montiel Niakhate Murillo Aina
Sangare Danillo CHO
MGW
Elanga Wood

If this works, it could be huge.

Elanga is playing too. I assume MGW will be the more advanced of a midfield three, or if we're really doing for it ahead of Sangare with Dani on a 4123.

I have no idea how well we will click with so little time on the training ground with Nuno.

But this side makes me feel much more confident as it has the potential to go out and win games and feels like us wanting to go and stamp some authority rather than us setting up hoping not to lose by nicking something on a long ball up top. It puts our highest quality players on the pitch, in their proper positions.

It could all go tits up today with little preparation, but I'd imagine this is just a first look at the kind of set ups we will expect to see later in January.

Same, agree it's a good line up. Hopefully we see a better sangare especially in his preferred role as a defensivemidfeilder

I like that line up - Wood played really well in that last game and so did CHO when he came on.
But cant see us getting anything out of this game.
Newcastle have a really bad injury list but Isaak , Gordan, Trippier, Longstaff all pay and they will run us ragged.
They also have Joel Lynton on the bench.

This could be a massacre

I do like MGW and CHO together, given their u21 history.

The Sangare Danilo pairing is the most risky, if that's what it is.

Spare a thought for Nuno. He came in, had a couple of days, picked a side which was torn apart by a crazed ref. They then played over an hour with 10 men against a decent team; they played with heart and spirit, but it must have taken it's toll.

He then had Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to sort out a few things and pitched straight into another battle. Tough choices with little preparation.

If we get anything, it will be a little miracle, so give the guy a break.

Styranger things have happened, keep the faith.

I presume he's going with players who are well rested because he's hoping to play a very high-energy game to exploit Newcastle's apparent exhaustion. It depends a lot on Sangare and Danilo getting up to speed and being the players we know they can be but haven't seen so far this season. Fingers and toes crossed. COYR!

Another manager, same old throw of the dice.

I want to be fair, so if Cooper had done that for this game, I would have said probably taking a risk on a team change in a game we might expect to lose.

So I'm hoping that Nuno has some similar motive.

You Reds.
