Loanee Watch (sponsored by Sammy the Clingan)

Yeah, that is the thing - when a footballer retires, there is nothing to stop him going and getting, you know, an actual job!

Neil Webb was a postman, and Des Walker drove a lorry.

Many players in days past became publicans.

Former Blackburn winger Stuart Ripley is now a solicitor, I believe, having completed a law degree when he finished playing.
And Fiream Sam!

I think Richards is the only one really which we've loaned out who has the potential to be in the first team, he has been sent out for fitness presumably as opposed to selling him (to the loan club or others). And it does seem the club are still being patient on this, we had to get other options in because it wasn't clear what was happening with Toffolo, who is just about adequate cover, and with doubts over Richards we ended up getting in Tavares (who is now injured himself) as well as Aina who is as much a LB as a RB. Montiel looks a bit doubtful but it is probably still Aurier's place to lose at RB so Aina will probably be LB with Toffolo as cover then Aurier / Montiel at RB and of course Williams can cover both too.

I'm not really that convinced any of the other players we have loaned out to other clubs will be coming back and competing for first team places. Scarpa is potentially the only one, but he's in his late 20s now and has never played outside Brazil and is also better in a team with more possession than we play. He also isn't going to be any more than cover for Morgan.

Even the younger players are probably being loaned to be sold to a lower division club ultimately. I'm sure Fin Back is promising and works hard but he's not a teenager any more and although he missed a lot of last season with injury he's only being loaned to Carlisle where if he was being considered for PL he'd be going to a Championship side. Ditto Mighten, who is younger than you might think because he was in the first team squad at like 17 but he didn't do a lot for us when he played in the CH and not on loan in L1 last season though SW's system perhaps didn't suit his position...
Maybe young Taylor can make an impact at Wycombe as well. Looks to have something about him.

He's already played for Northern Ireland and made his Irish League debut for Linfield aged just 15.

Hoping he can get a few goals this year, a Championship loan next year, and then push on from there. But I guess you never know.

Dale is 20 in December, whilst he's still pretty young he has been playing first team at 15 as you said but also this shows that physically he was able to at that age when some of them are really not much more than kids at this age. So in about his 4th / 5th year playing senior football he is playing League 1. In terms of progressing to our first team (which has to be the main aim for academy players) he is still a long way off. But then Brennan Johnson was playing for Lincoln in L1 the year before he got promoted with us so it is possible, and at a similar age.

Certainly in terms of his progression Dale is a long way behind someone like Evan Ferguson at Brighton who is a year younger and even that rat face Garnacho who I think played against Taylor in the youth cup final defeat a couple of years back.

I'm really not sure any of the current crop of Academy players/young pros we have are going to make it in our first team whilst we're still in the PL. Last season we had Worrall, Yates and Johnson but one of those has been sold and the other two are by no means guaranteed a place these days with the new signings we have. The level really does need to step up if we're going to achieve more than selling players to the EFL.

He looks to have potential, but he will be competing with Taiwo for the centre-forward role, and ~Elanga and Hudson-Odoi for the wide role.

Based on the little I've seen Taylor will forge a decent career but probably at a lower level than we are now - if he makes it at championship level he'll be doing well is my take, though I'd be delighted to eat those words!

In an ideal world Dale Taylor needs to get back in the Wycombe team, impress, score a lot of goals and help them up the table, to the point he’s saying I’m ready for a crack at a full season championship loan the season after. Then we’ll see if he can handle it at that level.

I think we're in a bit of a lull with the Academy at the moment - because, whilst we've done well to develop the talent we have had, we hadn't been in a position to recruit youngsters with obvious top-level talents, due to not being a top-level club and not being a top tier academy. We're now in a position where we can recruit better youngsters, but it's going to be a few years before they make their way through.

As I mentionned in another thread, I watched Ojeda and Laryea Saturday night, and both were poor in a very poor game. We should just unload them and move on.

Yes this.

We've also had Leicester City on our doorstep who up until this year have been ahead of us in the local picking order for players not quite good enough to get hoovered up by the likes of Man City etc.

Unfortunately I don't think there's anyone in the academy who are likely to make the step up for Forest. Dale Taylor, Zach Abbott and Josh Powell are probably the closest players to playing reasonably high level football for a long time, but even then I think you're looking at League One, maybe Championship at a push.

Thanks goodness. He misplayed a number of passes, some with no pressure. I'm not certain he is Championship standard, to be honest.
I think Laryea, Panzo, Hwang and Shelvey will enter the final year of their contracts in summer 2024. They should be easier to shift then, even if just for wages. Might be harder for Shelvey given his reported salary, but hopefully he has a half decent season and we can minimise our losses.

Given that Arter - unless he has another sneaky clause and his agent wins representative of the century - and Horvath along with Mbe Soh will be gone the bomb Squad will be looking thin.

We should also be able to find takers for Bowler and O'Brien at Championship level, at least on loan. That would leave Scarpa and Dennis. Scarpa will likely need to balance a need to play with a need for cash due to financial worries and Dennis is... Dennis. I guess there'll be a few this year that don't work out and we'll also want to move on, but I dont think there'll be many.

It's great to see the club with a succession plan. That phrase would send Fawaz into a cold sweat! Did a great job in summer at centre back and hopefully we'll see the same for forwards shortly, given that Wood just has a year left and Origi is on loan.

Sorry for rambling and famous last words and all that, but I can't remember the last time I felt so sure Forest were moving in the right direction.

I think so and yes it will take time, but it's evident the Academy will need to up their ante in terms of both the quality and the quantity of the players which come out for us to have any gains on the first team, and until then we will need to buy in.

Saying that progression from the academy to first teams seems to be comparatively rare in the PL. There aren't too many first team regulars at any of the other teams (well, apart from the ones who came up probably) who came through that club's Academy structure and there are even fewer who would be considered a star player for that club. Probably Saka or the first team players at City like Foden or Lewis are the only one really. And there are young players like Gordon at Newcastle, Declan Rice, Mason Mount who may be stars but were bought from somewhere else and don't count any more.

There were several games involving loanees in midweek and my knee is still dodgy (torn meniscus, apparently), so I thought I'd do a short round-up to make me feel better and pass the time.

No ball games for Omar Richards or Gustavo Scarpa as Olympiacos put Aris to the sword 4-1. Our sister club sit top of the Greek League.

Emmanuel Dennis didn't make the squad for Istanbul Basaksehir as they fell 4-0 to Fenerbahce today.

Hwang Ui-jo played 77 minutes for Norwich in a 2-1 EFL Cup defeat to Fulham, earning a 4 out of 10 rating from some reviewers. They now have a new and rather predictable nickname for him on the Pink 'Un forum.

Jonathan 'Pants' Panzo also has a new moniker according to the Cardiff City forum/Twitter after a reportedly dire performance in a 5-2 defeat to Blackburn, also in the Cup. Josh Bowler is apparently still injured and didn't make the squad.

Lewis O'Brien was stationed at left back again when Middlesborough beat Bradford 2-0 in the Cup. Boro fans praised his display in a position they are short in due to injuries and loss of form.

Richie Laryea played 72 minutes in Vancouver Whitecaps' 2-2 draw with Colorado Rapids in the MLS. He got credited with an assist, but didn't appear to know much about it when a cross bounced off him and fell to the scorer.

And that's about it. Slim pickings.

Hwang has been awful according to my Norwich supporting mate....

None of our loanees will get back in the Forest team. I thought Panzo looked set for a bright future but he's been dreadful lately too.

No surprises with Hwang, our resident Greeks on here said he was gash for Olympiakos and you look at his career and nothing jumps out as being a sign that he's good enough, especially at 31. Unbelievable that some on here were saying he'd do a job for us after 45 minutes in a training session against Notts.

Agree with you that none of the players we have out on loan will ever see a first team shirt for us as long as we're in the Premier League. We'll probably use the loan market to make profit like most of the Premier League seems to, rather than preparing players for the first team.

Quick weekend round-up.

Neither Omar Richards or Gustavo Scarpa made the match day squad for Olympiacos' 3-0 away win at Giannina.

Jojno Shelvey played the full 90/100 for Rizespor as they lost 5-0 away at Fenerbahce.

Loic Mbe Soh played the full game for Almere City against Utrecht in the Eredivisie. Loic assisted one of the goals in his team's 2-0 away win.

Alex Mighten is still injured and did not play for KJ Kortrijk this weekend in the Belgian league. KJ won 2-1.

Richie Laryea lasted 63 minutes as Vancouver Whitcaps played out a 2-2 draw with DC United in the MLS.

As mentioned above, Lewis O'Brien came off injured after 36 minutes of Middlesbrough's 3-2 win at Watford. He was again playing left back.

Josh Bowler still appears to be injured and didn't make Cardiff's squad for their 2-0 home win against Rotherham. Jonathan Panzo was an unused substitute again.

Hwang Ui-jo claimed an assist in Norwich's 2-0 win at home to Birmingham, as mentioned above. Shortly after entering the fray on 57 minutes, Hwang made a smart lay off to Rowe who waltzed past two players and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner. Hwang registered 6 out of 10 in the Pink Un's match review, which is an improvement.

Dale Taylor played the last 15 minutes or so of Wycombe's 2-0 home win against Fin Back's Carlisle United. Fin played the full 90/100.

Oli Hammond came on in the 67th minute of Cheltenham's 2-0 away defeat at the hands of Lincoln City.

Aaron Donnelly was selected in Dundee's squad for their goalless draw at Hibs. He didn't make it onto the pitch on this occasion.
