So many other players have been written off with many and varied reasons. Mostly seemingly nothing to do with their football ability because most haven't seen said players play.

Let's wait until we see him play. Seems reasonable to me since he's an international with a decent international side, he might be OK.

Because squads include under 21s and players who "won" the league only have to have had a bare minimum involvement.

Not every player in a squad will be world class either as (unless you're Chelsea) you can't spend unlimited funds to get 26 world class players.

Argentina have a population of 45.1m and only 26 of those were chosen to play and win against the rest of the world. It's highly likely that Montiel is much better than Wales RB/LB

Again which players of the England squad wouldn't be good enough to improve us? We lost in the 1/4 final to the runners up, of that squad I posted Coady (who didn't play a single minute), who is our last choice CB wouldn't improve us.
Coady is probably better than Worrall or McKenna. But then McKenna has played in tournament football for Scotland when we were still a Championship side.

I take your general point and it is correct, even with tournament football, there is the odd player in the squad who probably isn't up to the standard of even world cup winners, and when put into a lesser side they show their weaknesses.

People mention Livakovic on here a lot, and I do think he is a brilliant keeper, but he has spent all of his career at Dinamo and he is 28, no club outside Croatia has signed him. So how can we say how good he really is outside his performances for a very solid Croatia team (who have always been light on goals but defend well). If we signed him, how do we know that without the protection of their defence and with McKenna in front of him, he's not going to just make loads of mistakes and concede?

Even in tournament football it doesn't come down too much to the squad players. They can pick 22 and most have a defined first team who will start most if not all matches in a tournament unless players get injured or suspended.

Though if we look at the last WC and see that Hwang and Aguilera started mostly for their country, and we had plenty of others there who we wouldn't consider first team players, such as Freuler, Laryea etc all playing, then the general point of he's a WC player so he's good doesn't always apply. (And Freuler was a first team player here at the time, even if he's not really considered this now).

I haven't seen this lad play. But if the acquisitions lot and Cooper feel he is good enough that is worth backing.

I really have no idea why you keep talking about England in a way to suggest I said they wouldn’t be good enough to play for us?

I don’t feel like you have read what I put originally as I am not even saying the signing of Montiel is anything but good on paper.

What I was saying was Omar was getting shouted down by some by saying he scored a World Cup winning penalty which isn’t any sort of barometer I would use to judge signing a right back.

Why? Has there been any report of either SA or SA being interested, or is it just guesswork?

Well there was rumours he was off to SA a while back or somewhere, but they dried up. It might have been that they decided that he could go when the club had found a replacement. It's logical in a sense because he's our player and he's just signed another year.

I would be surprised if we weren't now starting to move to a 1 in 1 out basis with new signings, though. We don't appear to need to move Williams on, he's a young lad and his value will only increase as he gets more experience, also he can play both LB and RB. In the squad we also have Aina who (in 2 weeks) will be able to cover LB, RB and CB. Aurier is just a RB and is also unlikely to increase in value much, and might fancy a few years in SA where he can earn a lot and not do a lot of football like in the PL. We also have Biancone who can play RB and CB so do we need another without one moving on?

As it stands we're already looking at having plenty of senior players not making the 25 so can we really afford wages on players who can't play for is?

Its a proxy for "he was in the world cup squad of the World Cup winning side and on the field when the final whistle went" having been selected consistently as the back up to one of the best right back's in the world.

That's the barometer.

He doesn't score the penalty if he isn't on the field.

I only bring up England because we generally know how good they are, as we see them play more often so can have a better judgement on them, and we finished 5th-8th.

Omar was being critical of Montiel/the club for any reason he could, as he can't say anything positive without having to have a negative attached to it.

Lot of criticism of Omar but the posts saying simply saying ‘he scored a World Cup winning penalty’ as a reason we should all be over the moon he is signing is pretty baseless.

By all accounts he sounds like a good player and upgrade and if the club think it’s a coup then that’s a very good sign.

Forget what he has won in a squad based tournament, it really means quite little. You could name loads of active players who have won competitions that wouldn’t be suitable for the club so think we should park that.

Loan with a buy clause is excellent business from Ross.
I bet Ross is know as ‘Mr loan with an option to buy’ by all the clubs and agents from around the world.

“Who is on the phone Sergio?” [PUTS PHONE ON HOLD] “Er, senor, how you say, loan wit an option to buy”.

Serial winner. Evidently a winning mentality. Evidently good enough to be in an Argentinian WC squad.

South American football expert full of praise for the lad.

Argentine fans on Twitter all stating what a class player he is.

Percy reporting that the club see it as a real coup.

Some saddos on LTLF not convinced.

Ok.

So no evidence bar a rumour some time ago.

I don’t understand the issue. It’s a lot easier muting someone on here than in real life. If you don’t like certain posters just turn off their posts.

Stress is the biggest killer in the world…no one wants “Sad twat died off a heart attack after becoming infuriated on LTLF” written on their gravestone.

Above not aimed at anyone. I just think life’s too short to get wound up about f*** all.

I bet the annual LTLF meet-up is a riot…up until the bloke you’ve been bromancing all night says his online name is Omar 😳 until any of us meet F2F no one knows who we are in real life and how we would get on.

Personally, I’d love to meet Omar. I bet it would be bloody hilarious.

Happy to see this guy here. Attracting proven International players to come here, is a beautiful thing to see, and will make other PL clubs take note.

Now upto Steve Cooper to get the best out of him now. All we can do is make him welcome and see how he gets on, and then maybe pass judgement.

Rubbish. He played in 5 games for Argentina at the World Cup. Anyway, let's even say he was "just" a squad player. Do you think Argentina had a similar or greater squad strength than England ? Many would say greater than. So if this guy is in their squad does that not make him one hell of a player ?
