Rubbish. He played in 5 games for Argentina at the World Cup. Anyway, let's even say he was "just" a squad player. Do you think Argentina had a similar or greater squad strength than England ? Many would say greater than. So if this guy is in their squad does that not make him one hell of a player ?
Look this is the last time I am going to say it. I have repeatedly said I am all for the signing as he clearly has pedigree. What I was suggesting was people shouldn’t just base that on him scoring a penalty in the World Cup to try and steer the conversation away from using that as a stick to beat Omar with and towards his attributes, style and what he brings to the table for Forest.

It's not the fact he scored the winning goal, it's the fact he was there in the first place. Selected in the squad of The World Champions.

As I said above, how many of our current squad do you think would make that Argentina squad? Certainly not Serge or Neco.

He has also won the Copa America with Argentina, numerous trophies with River Plate and the Europa League with Sevilla too.

The fact that he has been involved with numerous trophy-winning sides for club and country suggests that the lad has something about him.

Heffing Psycho put a good balanced post up with his wheel saying in Lehman’s terms he is backup at Argentina and Sevilla is available for 11m so is clearly not a world beater but would be an obvious upgrade. Fine. And actually mirrors my take and I haven’t suggested anything other than that.

Omar is Omar so is a lot more heavy handed but he made a similar point that he isn’t going to be Philip Lahm just because he won the World Cup.

I know it rubs people up the wrong way but I just wanted to try and make it through a thread without a load of infighting as I wanted to hear more about the player and his attributes above him being in the World Cup team

Forgive me but I find this a strange one, since you've taken one post (correct me if I'm wrong, but I saw a single post saying he scored a penalty at the world cup final) and ran with that as some kind of suggested stick to beat Omar with, which is apparently the opposite of what you want people to talk about? If you want folk to talk about the players attributes why do the opposite yourself?

(And nothing against you at all as a poster - just can't help but point out the contradiction)

I have read this whole thread (to my sins) and I haven't seen one post that makes the assumption because he scored the winning penalty he is the next Cafu or Lahm. The general gist is that he must have something about him to be in multiple sides/squads that have won some of the biggest club/international competitions in the world.

Exactly.

Omar constantly talks in superlatives which doesn't bear any relation to what people actually say. That's what annoys people the most.

Admittedly know little to nothing about him so thought i'd have a look at what his past clubs had to say about him, both have almost polar opposite views

River Plate loved him and have apparently been unable to replace him since he left, general consensus is that they would love to have him back. However Sevilla fans seemingly can't wait to get rid of him now that they've managed to upgrade, claim that he's not very good going forward and struggles defensively

Obviously it doesn't mean much until we get to see him in action with us so I take both sets of opinions with a big pinch of salt. Although the following fills me with a reasonable level of confidence

'Described as a sponge by a member of River Plates coaching staff due to his willingness to listen and eagerness to improve, he should be a joy to work with for any future coach.'

Struggling to get my head around posters questioning this signing. Yes there are other areas we need players in for but we should be looking to strengthen all areas as and when the opportunity arises.

Regardless of Serge leaving or not, I'd consider Montiel a decent upgrade. The thought of him linking up with Jonno on the right is very exciting.

The irony wasn’t lost on me as I was posting so I have no defence on that front Pete, but I wasn’t helped by multiple people saying the same thing and asking me about Englands squad.

Just as nobody said he was Lahm (one extreme) Omar didn’t say he was shit or worse Carl Jenkinson (another extreme) but he takes a lot of flak for his extreme whereas largely others don’t. Feels like when he posts its a ‘oh shit here we go again’ meme in my head.

Anyway I am bored of this myself. Probably the last time I act as a human shield for Omar 😂

It's a thankless task, though one I suspect he enjoys doing himself. Glad you took it in the spirit intended and I do get what you're saying - all good.
