Turns out Southgate passed his resignation to the FA on Sunday evening but it's taken a while to come out.

The FA passed it back, Southgate passed it on to Bellingham, Bellingham passed it sideways to Kane, Kane passed it to Rice and Rice passed it to Stones, who passed it back to the keeper, who hoofed it off for an Opposition goal kick.

In fairness to him, he took us from being an absolute joke under Hodgson to restoring some pride in the National Team.
In hindsight, he's stayed a tournament too long and just wasn't quite good enough as a manager to get this team over the line.

I think a better coach manages the Italy final and Croatia semi much better. I also think that a better coach exploits Rodri going off at half-time in the Spain game. Spain, like Italy were dark horses to win the tournament. You'd probably put your money on the Germans, the French or the Portuguese to win Euro 2024 but none of them even made the final.

We slogged our way to the final and blew it, again.

I said to my Mrs an hour before the start that he'd take Kane off and sub him with Watkins at the 60 minute mark. That was before any events in the match itself.

He made the swap at 60mins 09 seconds.

If I can predict that, anyone can. Kane was knackered long before that, he should not have come on at all second half. It's that kind of inflexibility that has to change.

That said Southgate deserves people's respect. He got us to the semis and finals that "bigger managers", the likes of Terry Vegetables, Howard Wilknson, Glen Hoddle and Fabio Capello, could only dream of.

Good points, but I'll definitely say that I reckon Venables would have bagged a trophy given the time Southgate has had with the squads Southgate has had.

Well now we get to see if Gary was good, mediocre, or great. Not certain who will take over, but it won't be a top manager, almost certainly.

I would expect John Herdman will put his name in.

I think one thing ANY manager requires to maximize their success is the ability to self assess, figure out what they are good at, and surround themselves with an assistant and coaches who are good at what they are not. I got the feeling, with Cooper, that this Tate guy was close to clueless. Maybe he is a genius. But he certainly didn't appear that way. Pep has a huge staff and his assistant is VERY involved in what Pep does. This tells me something about Pep and how he is on another level compared to most managers. This Holland guy, alongside Southey, appeared to do little, from my observation. Maybe I'm wrong, but he certainly didn't seem terribly involved.

I hope it’s Lee Carsley.

Potter would be a disaster, extremely overrated manager which was proven by how bad he managed to make Chelsea.

But he wouldn't be a boring bastard.
Nobody would, of course. But Potter was thought of a future England manager before, so what had changed?

The chief characteristic the next England manager needs is the ability to create a winning team ... by which I mean someone who can look at this undoubtedly talented group of players and play to their strengths preferably by using them as they are used week in and week out - Gareth's problem was he believed tournament football was different, so he had a tactical approach that actually negated the skills an abilities of most of our players and they were fragile as f*** because it wasn't natural for them.

It will probably be Carsley.

There is no outstanding English or perhaps even British candidate, though I'd perhaps seriously consider Rob Edwards.

Best option for the FA imo is to go from within

I'm surprised more folks aren't behind Howe. His Bournemouth and Newcastle sides have played some genuinely brilliant football over the last decade.

His downside seems to be that he asks his players to run so much that they get injured a lot, but that's not a problem if he only sees the squad every month or two. I'd be over the moon if he decides he wants it.

Yes I called him Shitreth Shitgate in the heat of the moment but I do massively respect Gareth for what he's done for the England team

And if you'll indulge a middle-aged Star Trek fan I will just leave this here, it's a quote from Captain Jean-Luc Picard and perhaps my favourite of his many inspirational quotes in that show's seven year run

It's something I've said to my daughters on many an occasion

Apparently Southgate redrafted his resignation letter 7,501 times before sending Kieron trippier to deliver it in a tank. Wearing a helmet. With a parachute on. And spare socks. With 3 other back up right backs trailing in a chopper. On arrival it took the FA 15 mins to receive the letter as they waited for the 4 right backs to stop passing it between themselves from side to side in a low block. In the end, Pickford (called up by the FA in desperation) grabbed the letter and kicked it long, giving the FA possession. On opening the envelope the FA discovered that Southgate had written the content in a code he had devised during the tournament for relaying his ideas to the team. At that point they realised there no f***ing way they would ever get to read the letter and sacked Gareth by text whilst simultaneously putting out a statement to the media about his resignation. Realising he was now behind Gareth sprang into action and put the kettle on.

If they go with Carsley we might as well resign ourselves to winning nothing - you'd think they would have realised by now that winning an under 21 competition is not a template for full squad success, and that actual top level managerial experience does count for something when getting the extra 5% out of your top players and gelling them into a functional setup.

As for Sir Gareth good riddance.

Glad he's resigned for both him and England.

He can walk away with his head held high based on the improvements he's made to our general standing, but it's definitely time for a change now too.

Howe would be fine for me, not first pick by any means but I think this squad is better suited to him than Southgate

What I will say for that is Dela Fuente at Spain... Also Southgate never won anything at under 21 whereas Carsley has. It honetsly amazes me that Southgate ever got the job. He was a failure everywhere hes been. I dont think you can lump Carsley in that same boat. Internatiuonal football is also a different animal.

Can I just say it’s so disheartening seeing questions about Kane standing down from England. I think it’s so incredibly harsh. He’s still an awesome player and he has a place in the SQUAD. Depending on play style he may not fit the 11 but for voices in the media questioning whether he’d play for England again is bonkers.

The Harry Kane situation is exactly the same as Chris Wood under Cooper. We’ve all been there and some of us have written off Wood. A change of style has got the most out of wood.

If England are playing a low block with Kane at the tip of that with no inside forwards running on than that will make Kane look shit.

It’s horses for courses and depending on what you need and play style will dictate the players you play and to cast aside Kane so easily is pure madness.

Southgate's main issue is his lack of tactical awareness and allergic reaction to taking risks.

If he can be Southgate but knows how to outthink other managers he will be a great appointment.
