Embargo lifted in January?

My worry is I think given the right job on the pitch we do have a couple of people who can contribute with goals that have been brought in.

I agree with this, its even more criminal to misuse a good striker than not have one at all. Oliveira like many strikers before him would probably benefit from a partner.

Doing his own donkey work is clearly not his strength. Give him a partner or at least a number 10 to connect with or your wasting his talents.

That's a bang on post. For all the good purchases he's made in terms of quality/value, not bringing in someone who can pitch in with a few goals seems quite an oversight.

I think he already has them to be fair. It's the quality of chances they are creating that is the problem.

If we were creating good chances regularly, I see no reason why they wouldn't put at least some of them away.

But the types of chances we are creating aren't often very good.

That's the big problem IMO, and it doesn't feel like we are playing particularly to the strengths of the players we have.

Goal scorers are the hardest players to get when you have zero money to spend. Who would you have brought in for no money who would regularly score goals in the Championship?

You could set up the team in other ways. Over the past 15 years we've had top goalscorers who have been midfielders and defenders.

By the looks of things we don't look set up for anyone else to score apart from strikers.

I'd ask my midfielders to get into the box more for a start. Where have Lansburys late runs into the box gone? Why are our strikers so isolated? Why even when attacking do we have two, three at times, CM's still sitting?

And we've done that this season with Matt mills. Dougie can't win :nowink:

While people are thinking about the players may be able to sign there's one thing I'd be quite excited about - being able to sell Danny Fox and get someone in so that we aren't too lacking in defensive depth. Also Dex may be shifted, and if he returns from fitness Fryatt could be sold to raise funds etc. I'm just as excited at the prospect of maybe getting some players off the books. Though it does sound like more of a summer thing.

Even they are being reduced to most speculative efforts.

If you look at the Derby game, Oliveiras goal out of nothing, from out of the box taking a deflection on its way through.

Sell lansbury & Tesche , Loan Gardner and bring Johnny Bostock back to english shores. Bostock actually knows how to take freekicks.

Fox is a scottish international and has a good rep , maybe some manager is desperate enough to take him , maybe.

Haha, we don't need a striker, we have: the man, the myth, the legend: Chris O'Grady.

Now he's scored one I reckon he'll go on a run

Sorry I'm just hyper about todays result.

It helped if he is allowed to take penalties instead of our so-called captain , lansbury. If anything , O'Grady should already have 1 or 2 more to his name after the 2 penalties he gained in his first couple of games.

Where's me hammer?
Goalie should have saved his shot for the goal but he worked hard and did really well for the 3rd

Point proven. So many of us who disregarded the 'number of chances' stat have been saying this for weeks although some were insisting it was 'bad luck'.

Playing one up top and isolating him was never going to yield goals without luck.

Exactly.

It was never down to his price tag or ability that he was struggling to score, it was purely down to the quality of chances he was being fed.

Most of his chances were restricted to shots from the edge of the box, which are fairly lucky if they go in (his goal vs Derby for example, though his goal from outside the box yesterday was pretty special)
He was mostly having to try and make something special happen all by himself, which is where he would struggle.

Create good chances for him and there's nothing to stop him putting a decent percentage away. We saw both Oliveira and O'Grady score proper strikers goals yesterday and hopefully we will see more of that going forward.

No reason why O'Grady couldn't chip in with a few too as their partnership develops.
I just hope Freedman doesn't rip it up and start again. Get them working together in training and build that partnership.

But even his goal outside of the box yesterday, there were other players in and around the box creating a chaotic environment and gaps opened up for the shot. We weren't doing that before. Yesterday, everything going forward was better. It beggars belief that it has taken so long.
