Current state of the squad

In two seasons I'm more than happy to have the likes of Reyna and Origi as cover options especially if one of them barely played. Shows we're doing something right if they don't get minutes. Ribeiro didn't work but we did have three or four strikers ahead of his anyway.

For where we were, yeah I can understand that. I'm talking about moving forward now though. That mindset has to change, and even loans like Reyna and Ribero shows we were still happy to bring in bodies, despite their relative uselessness.

We'll remain relegation fighters operating that way.
We will be relegation fodder without cover also. Imagine if we had no cover and CHO got inured than wed have to put Dominguez out wide. We need squad fillers and bodies. The trick is they are relavtily low cost and fit the profile we need. For example the sub wingers we deffo need have to have pace. Of course I agree with you we need the best players we can get but this also needs to be prioiritised accordingly depending on what we need first and budget. Older players who are a free and have expereince in the league can be really vital in building a decent squad. I just want to make sure this year we have 2 players for every position and not overstock ourselves.

One thing we need to move on from for me is the obsession with bringing cover in, as if the current players have done that good a job that their places aren't in question.

I listened to the Forest Focus podcast this week where they were talking about the squad and a lot of the talk was about 'providing cover' for whichever position they were talking about. A real focus (no pun intended) this summer has to be on bringing genuine quality in. Even if it means only 3/4 players come in* they have to be ones that demand a place in the starting XI.

* I can never imagine a scenario where Forest under this Greek ownership make only 3/4 signings in a summer.

I guess it depends on how highly you rate our current first 11, and how much we've got to spend this summer. I honestly think a first 11 of Sels; Williams, Boly, Murillo (or good replacement), Aina; Sangare (assuming good preseason), Danilo; Elanga, MGW, CHO; Awoniyi (or Wood) is good enough for around 13th or 14th in the table without PSR nonsense and hopefully better set piece play.

I'd be thrilled with 3-4 good players really pushing for starting places, but I don't know if we'll be able to afford that. Backups to the above (where needed) would be cheaper.

Lots of rumours that AFCON 2025 has been postponed and moved to January 2026.

AFCON was scheduled for July 20 - Aug 16 and the World Cup June 15 - July 13

Moving it could be absolutely shit for us as it means losing players again when it comes around.

tbf we don't have Kouyate and Aurier now, may easily not have Taiwo, Boly has signed for a year with an option of a 2nd so fitness wise may not be there either, and Aina is only on another year.

So that just (unless we sign any more African players) leaves our amazingly popular record signing and Niakhate

Two of the six senior players released (McKenna and Felipe) played a huge part in getting us to where we are now.

You'd think so but for whatever reason we were still technically in danger of relegation on the last day with the worst bottom 3 in Premier League history. Yes we had a deduction and I do agree that when they're all on it the side is capable of better than 17th but too many times last season under both Nuno and Cooper they didn't show it, so something needs to change.

i can understand why they were brought in and why nuno stopped our season loans from going back - tavares and origi even though there were talks of them going. January transfer window was tough , forest were under the threat of points deduction, no big money signings (sels had to be made due to turner high profile mistakes), afcon going on losing 5-6 players. With awoniyi injured and wood not always available himself , ribero was a backup just in case origi is also out, reyna was a backup creative player to mgw just in case of injury and he can also play on the flank.

honestly, worse case scenario, mgw, wood and origi got injured , you would be blaming the club for not anticipating what could happen.

Not really - 6 first team players - only 2 of which were in the 1st team squad, 2 guys who are at the end of their career, and 2 guys that are surplus to requirements.
The loans were all squad players - that were needed/used as necessary to cover injuries etc - although I agree some didn't contribute much. I guess that is why they were on loan and not bought.
It's always sad to see young players not make the grade - but we playing at a higher level, which means there will be more casualties.

I saw one yesterday with the headline "Forest release 13 players in madness".

Even other supporters were weighing in saying every club do it at the end of the season and that most were academy players and what so you want them to do, keep players they are never going to play or that are out of contract

I can too, but the standard has to improve.

Proper Set piece defending would give us another 10 points

THats sports bible who did that, left or right leaning papers do this. Its just sensorial headlines so people click on them. Its all for clicks, I bet you other sides have released a load of players as well. Anyway thank christ we are fans because we know the truth. I am happy completely with who has been released. I think its a step forward to becoming more established. If we can sell Murillo for 60 mill before June 30th than that gives us an excellent platform to go again. 3rd year of prem we can have more losses, stadium revenue will increase a little and the sale of Murillo should put us in a nice place. We just need to sort out the manager one way or the other. I hate how its certain yet for the fans.

Was his ambition to lie on his sofa watching Netflix and stuffing his face full of pizza whilst getting paid £40k a week for the privilege.

Thats the kind of AMBITION I can get on board with.
No. It was to turn up to work every day, coach and play with the kids, act as a mentor and have noone at the club have a bad word to say about him...

Wow, should be in the Oxford English dictionary under sensationalism.

Brutal clear out including a player who they couldn't give away and hasn't played a single minute for the last 3 years, pure comedy gold.

Don't call them the daily fail for nothing.

The other players are presumably Montiel and Origi.

Neither of them was our player in any case and they have both gone back to their parent clubs when the loans expired.

Montiel wasn't a key part of that Argentina side, he'd come on a sub in the final I think, and scored the winning penalty in the shoot out.
Origi I think didn't contribute much at Liverpool either nor to the final beside scoring.

They are just looking for a reason to make the headline look more sensational than the facts, which is common in the media to make people click it.

18 players leaving is what we need - it includes out of contract players who aren't good enough for us any more like McKenna, Mbe Soh, as well as ones who have done their time with us and done a decent job to help when required such as Kouyate, and then players like Arter and Felipe who are retiring. I bet it's not uncommon for promoted sides to have a fair amount of exit turnover over the 2-3 years after going up as the squad gets improved which is what we still need to do.
