Snatchday 1: Nottingham Forest Vs the PGMOL

There is more inherent respect for refs in rugby. Probably for 3 reasons:

1) The refs are like school masters and all those public school boys would get PTSD if they dissented.

2) Rugby is a dangerous game. If scrums aren't setup and supervised properly, someone could end up with a broken neck. Likewise, high tackles could end in serious injury. The ref is responsible for the safety of everyone out there, probably more so than any other team sport (other than maybe American Football), so there has to be an inherent trust in the officials otherwise the game couldn't function properly. And if a fight between players breaks out, unlike the handbags at dawn in football, with the size of those blokes someone's ending up with a broken jaw or cheekbone.

3) No one knows the bloody rules anyway. I'm sure there must be some, but I reckon most people know you're not allowed to pass it forward and that's about it.
Rugby’s a fine game, and even if you don’t like it, it does teach us a couple of things footballers should take note of.

1) It takes a fair bit of contact to knock over a human being.
2) When a human is genuinely hurt, they don’t tend to roll around on the floor screaming at the sky clutching a limb. It’s more taking a knee and mouthing the word f*** over and over.

"Muscle memory". Public schoolboys quickly learn to muffle their screams in the dorm after midnight....

A lot of Footballers and fans thought Reyna's was never a pen whereas there are loads of Forest who are passionate in thinking it was. So with that massive gap in peoples views this almost makes the game unreffable.

That's because they've deliberately introduced subjective rules.

If they had a concrete framework instead which ref's were held to on a consistent basis then there wouldn't be a gap in people's views.

Alas, got to help out those top 6 clubs with "subjective" decisions that always go in favour.

The rules were already subjective.

They've introduced more nuance to solve complaints about errors, which has fractured the subjectivity into more possible scope for error.

Yes and it's impossible to remove all subjectivity by the very nature of the sport, the aim should be to remove as much as possible. I've mentioned before that the biggest example of their backwards logic is that by inserting the "clear and obvious" rule for intervention that they've actually added another layer of subjectivity. What is clear and obvious to one person isn't to another. It's absolutely ridiculous.

That's because Rugby is a shit game where you can't see what's going on most of the time
When I was much younger I went to see an American Football game at White City. It was between the champions of some sort of competition in the US Zone in Germany.

Throughout the game, I didn't see the ball in play once, except when it was thrown long. I thought how impossible it was to ref and how boring for spectators.

The thing that also pissed me off about that mic'd up show was that they not only had to shoe in a Spurs example where VAR got it bang on, but then spent more air time dribble over it than our pen.

If not the public, the clubs should have access to all VAR audio as standard. They still haven't explained why it took so long to release this one.

You say top 6 clubs always get decisions. However our main moans this season hasnt all happened against the top 6. I dont doubt some validity of your argument but when it happens against Everton and we mention the top 6 than that is whatabouterry. Also another stupid thing people are saying is "Top 6 get more penalties"... Well if you attack more than other teams you will get more penalties! Yes we should have had more pennos but feck me we hardly are an attacking threat that gets into dangerous positions often.

Having played rugby for many years, both are correct, and, 2) is the reason my ankles and knees are now f**ked.

I'm sure it's a great sport to play

But to watch it's tedious as f***

Nothing really, just referencing that they atwell had been hwavily involved in penalties reently. You could just sense he was doing it with tongue in cheek for our benefit.

I actually thought Taylor reffed it really well.
He mentioned that Attwell was on VAR and then the commentary went quiet for about 7/8 seconds. During which time he was probably wondering what he could feasibly get away with saying that wouldn't kill his career.

The current VAR system is the personification of that person we all know, who has been driving around with the 'Check Engine' light on in their car for so long that the bulb which illuminates the warning light has dimmed. Now they won't check it because it's not 'clear and obvious' that it's on.

I obvioulsy diagree its actually a very dynamic sport. Its more stop start than Footy I agree and Footy is my favourite sport. However if you can watch Test Cricket which I do, NFL which I do, Golf I dont or F1 I dont. Than I cant see how you can think Rugby Union or League are a boring watch in my opinion. However its your opinion and you like what you like!

I don't have a problem with stop-start sports at all

As I pointed out in my issue with Rugby is for at least 50% of the game you can't see the ball or what's going on

But this isn't an egg chasing thread so I'll leave it there

Also, f a player is seriously injured the players themselves react to it, the ref then knows as do the crowd, the coaches and the medics. The same applies in football, the players react to a serious injury. If the refs took a lead from the players they would more easily differentiate between the divers and the players genuinely in trouble.

I have always loved Rugger!

Just support Nottingham like I do. They are shit but they are ours 😅 Otherwise Northampton and Quins are the most fun to watch. Further afield Fijian Drua in super rugby are an absolute joy. Fijians are fecking ace.
