The Official Joel Lynch appreciation thread.

he had a good game. Fell over a lot, but was easily our best player.

He's still a young lad, adapting to a level of football he hadn't played at before joining the club and has got better every time I've seen him.

That shot he had yesterday that Loach tipped wide was all created by Lynch. He won the original header to flick on to Miller and finished the move. He should have scored one of his chances!

Certainly not a wing back, would be better suited to a 4-4-2 formation.

However, that said, certainly can do a job at left back, and good that he is tall. The shortness of Gunter was exposed time and time again yesterday.

Thought he had a cracking game yesterday and despite the win not many of our players could say that. One tackle was absolutely fantastic.

Before this season i died inside whenever he played or even if named on the bench, but i have to say Tuesday he looked in the right place in defence good and the game either side he tried his best in not his best position so well done to him. Now if only the rest of the team who can play better got their shit together :)

Its not that Gunter's particularly short (5'11") his timings shit. He needs jumping lessons from Findley (5'9").

Best player in our last three matches.

Integral in our potential storming of the league.

Game winning performance against Watford

The player of our season if the season ended tonight.

If we need a player to play at left back, it's him.

Tackles hard and has a great cross

Superb player.

Yesterday the formation Steve McClarin adopted, Joel Lynch was supposed to be a wing-back to increase our attacking opportunities from the wide areas, while giving stability to the defence. Yes he played competently as a defender, but appeared totally lacklustre and ineffective as a wing back, failing to provide crosses into the box. Although yesterday's performances we lacked width, and penetration from the centre by playing two centrally defensive midfielders and McGugan. Also the formation adopted (5-3-2) mean't we were playing five in defence, and Morgan stayed back so we were more defensive minded. Don't forget we were also playing Watford a team struggling to score, and win at home.

The Derby match Lynch did look better making an attempt with some dangerous crosses, but the majority were too heavy and overhit, so again mainly ineffective. If we are going to play Lynch maybe he should play in his natural position and challenge for a first team spot as one of the central backs, as he doesn't provide sufficient attacking options compared to the likes of Moloney, and Gunter (both players naturally right footed) who are as competent in defence*. Although another option is playing Clint Hill, or Freeman on the left side of defence.

*I have written an article detailing the reasons to our decline and problems with our defence, hopefully it will be posted in the foreseeable future.

Forget Lynch for left back now. Lynch has the potential to be the Championships version of Gareth Bale. Hardly got into the side, and all of a sudden, injuries meant he gets in, and he takes his chance in that position. Did a lot of good work yesterday, and put himself about well. I'd keep him at left mid for now, especially with his threat at corners.

I think he should take a few free-kicks now with his crossing ability.
