That's US politics - Bloc votes

Trump didn't move the US Embassy to Jerusalem and recognise the Golan because he believed it was right. He did it to please the huge voting blocs of the Christian Eschatologists and the Lubavitcher Jews, and drive a wedge between Jewish Democrats. That's US politics.

David Baddiel a racist? Arguable.

David Baddiel an unfunny bully? Unarguable.
Very true Eric. Baddiel is the same as all the rest of the London media clique, Fry, Schama, Boyle, Lucas, Lineker etc it is all about continuing to get contracts. They make the 'right' political noises, and then issue a faux apology when they f*** up.

I'm amazed he's still in the limelight, I'm buggered if I can figure out what talent he's got. Still I'm sure this "apology" will help.

I really have no idea. In my opinion Skinner is incredibly funny and talented. Baddiel just came across as s bit if a posh bit mumbling along next to him.

I watched the Abosolutelee podcast earlier - Jason came across brilliantly, a model of dignity, Baddiel not so much, the disingenuous prick that he is.

Highlight was Lee's 'I want my six pounds back' comment about Baddiels book. I got the impression Lee was under no illusions about the timing of the apology, though is gracious enough to take it regardless.

Not sure I could handle myself the way Jason did - credit to him.

Aside from anything else, this is another off those all-too-common cases when people ridicule others for being “awful” at something that they would love to be able to do even a fraction as well as their target can.

I’d be quite happy if I was anything near as good at football as the “worst” Premier League pros.

So by that logic this (and every other forum) ceases to exist. Let’s delete all performance criticism from contributors who are less capable footballers than their ‘targets’….. there wouldn’t be enough left in this forum to cover a page. Not blind to your point, but you’re saying the only people who can have a negative opinion are those ‘better’ than the recipient- not sure that works

It’s wasn’t just a negative opinion, though. It was continuous ridicule of him as a player and person based on a perception of his footballing talents.

Yes it was, but that is exactly what you said “this is another off those all-too-common cases when people ridicule others for being “awful” at something that they would love to be able to do even a fraction as well as their target can.” Those are your words.

This thread has now just moved firmly into self congratulatory, sanctimonious shit

Different opinions of whether the sketches were racist or not, bullying or not, all whilst trying to remember something is being viewed through a 2022 lens for something created 25 years ago.

The main thing here is that Sky have learned, now we’re in 2022, that making content that singles out an individual for their individual features probably isn’t funny anymore.

So, I’m pleased they’ve learned. Oh wait…..was that an apology to Steve Cooper after your shit new show aired?

Hey MC - I totally agree with your first paragraph, but for me, just because something is not acceptable now does not necessarily warrant it not being available to see, if this is what is being suggested.

It is of course down to an organisation's decision, but keeping it accessible is not a bad thing. IMO these programmes should be available but with a 15 second intro, visual and audio that states the content is not acceptable today and even when it was recorded it may have been considered in a different light.

Just my take on how these situations should be tackled.

There’s criticism and commentary then there’s abuse. Looking back (or perhaps even at the time) the weekly sketches calling him useless at his job wasn’t right and was going beyond what’s acceptable without the racism element.

I agree with you that Skinner is as sharp as any comic I've seen or heard at ad-lib responses and off-the-cuff humour, which made me keen to see him live when he appeared at Nottingham Playhouse some time ago as part of a comeback tour following 10-years away from the circuit.

I couldn't have been more disappointed. After 10/15-minutes-or-so of reasonably clever, observational stuff he suddenly took the lazy blue route - as far away from the "alternative" comedy for which he was well known for as he could get. In terms of that type of material, I can honestly say I've seen far better comics at the Radford Variety club.

Likewise Frank I was quite keen on Skinner and remember getting his comeback tour on DVD for Christmas and it nosedived after about 20 minutes.

Very high praise indeed that last bit
