I might be in the minority but I'm not a fan of retiring shirt numbers. There are plenty of other ways to recognise a club legend. A statue or renaming part of the ground is good lasting reminder.Pantomime villains FC Bayern have actually announced something that has the majority of German football fans applauding - they’ve announced they are retiring the number 5 shirt, in honour of the legendary Franz Beckenbauer, after Der Kaiser passed away in January.
I think they should only be retired if a player dies whilst wearing the shirt.I might be in the minority but I'm not a fan of retiring shirt numbers. There are plenty of other ways to recognise a club legend. A statue or renaming part of the ground is good lasting reminder.
I would rather the legacy of the shirt number by built upon, and provide inspiration and honour for whoever gets to wears it. For example when I think of the Utd #7 shirt I'm thinking Robson, Cantona, Beckham, Best, Ronaldo. What an honour it would be to follow in those footsteps.
I’m inclined to agree with this and with Trents’s comment (though with squad numbers we won’t get quite the same succession of players in a particular numbered shirt). Didn’t Birmingham retire Jude Bellingham’s shirt number when he left? It seems so ridiculous I’m doubting myself as I write this. A (very) promising teenager gets a big move early in his career - let’s retire his shirt number. Utterly stupid. And that’s before we recall that they once had every bit as promising a teenager in Trevor Francis, who did a lot more for the club in his time with them and they didn’t retire his number when he eventually joined us…I think they should only be retired if a player dies whilst wearing the shirt.
No, you’re correct, they did.Didn’t Birmingham retire Jude Bellingham’s shirt number when he left? It seems so ridiculous I’m doubting myself as I write this. …
That £25 mil apparently saved them from administration too.No, you’re correct, they did.
Bit bonkers, but hey, they’re Brummies.
