I get the call for Yates, I really do, sadly though his inclusion tends to result in the same impotent midfield performance of that of his counterparts. I don't feel he presents physically half as much as is made out.

That said, Id play him, purely on the basis you want to at least some outward effort & passion in the shirt. Yates plus one for the season come what may.

f***ing hell though, can we get one recruitment drive right when it comes to central midfield. How can we keep f***ing up such a key area?

It is more infuriating because Forest had a perfectly decent option there already, in Orel Mangala, but instead decided to bin him off in favour of 37m vanity signing Sagaré, who has been frankly, rubbish.

At least Mangala could hold onto possession a bit, which is something Forest are always seeming to struggle with.

It's pretty clear what he does, and that's to put himself around, cause a bit of mayhem, win some free kicks by drawing fouls and also give a fair amount away himself.

Yesterday was quite typical, he'd come on and within a few minutes got himself booked for some silly foul.

The physicality is a good point - Yates is a reasonably tall lad and is quite strong but he doesn't physically dominate midfield battles either, none of them really do. And the aerial aspect at both ends isn't there in terms of output as we're still vulnerable to set plays and crosses whether or not he's playing (although interesting we didn't look threatened much from either yesterday) and coming to the end of his 2nd season he still hasn't scored a PL goal.

Assuming that we have Danilo, Yates, Dominguez and Sangare competing for 2 midfield slots (and that Reyna, Elanga, CHO and MGW are looking for the 3 in front) overall I don't think any stand out really relative to the others. Danilo is probably the best one on his day and has a decent output for goals and his passing ability but he is also quite inconsistent and especially yesterday didn't seem particularly on it.

Maybe we should bring back the ginger pirlo?

I think we have to play Yates every game at the minute, despite his limitations I believe we’re worse off without him.

The bigger issue is we’ve spunked a fortune on Sangare who as of yet hasn’t looked up to speed, if he even remotely resembled a footballer we’d be better off but he looks like he can’t be arsed every time he’s on the pitch.

I think I’d Run Yates/Dominguez till the end of the season with Danilo off the bench - hopefully Danilo starting on the bench means we see more of the good parts of his game unlike yesterday.

Agreed.

Although I don't mind starting with Dom & Danilo IF Nuno pulls his finger out his arse and changes it early if it isn't working. Something which his slow-paced reactions never seem to do in time sadly.

Sangare's proving to be one of our worst buys ever when you factor his value in. Even if he goes on to be brilliant for us, spunking 30m+ on him and having to lose Mangala to cover some of the costs has done nothing but weaken us this season. Bad player in, good player out for no profit. really bad recruitment decisions all round.

Ryan Yates is a technically what a supporter would perceive as traditional defensive midfielder patrolling up to the centre circle, making important interceptions and dictating play. Of course there are many facets to a defensive minded midfielder that many people fail to understand and appreciate. With the Premiership allowing five substitutes this has increased the pace, and fitness requirements needed to play this role. A proficient defensive midfielder should have the stamina to tirelessly run for 90 minutes, helping out the defence though important tackles or double man marking an attacking opposition player.

How many supporters actually understand the complexity, difficulty and actual physicality of playing Defensive Midfield? Ryan Yates appears at times clumsy, but does effectively break up play, make crucial important interceptions, but has the capacity to dictate play, link-up and create dangerous through balls. More importantly his partnership, and understanding with Danilo allowed his partner the freedom to create additional opportunities.

The issue and complaint though is that the defence frailties are acerbated through Nuno’s tactic to press in advance positions. The attacking Midfielders, and Morgan Gibb White are slow to react and back-track when the opposition rapidly counter-attack on the wings. This leave spaces for the opposition to exploit.

Dom & Danilo? More like Dick & Dom yesterday.

I watched a bit of West Ham vs Leverkusen the other day and Alonso took their right-back Kossounou off after half an hour, as he was getting rinsed - ruthless considering he'd just played 90 minutes in their title-winning game a few days before, but it's what had to be done. I've no idea why Nuno can't take the same approach.

Dominguez is no good as a covering midfielder. Far better pressing further forward (see Villa home game) where he played left of the 3 behind the striker, and probably had his best game for us. Yates and Danilo are the only options for CM unless Nuno can get a tune out of Sangare at some point and play him instead of Yates.

Agree on Dominguez, but MGW can indeed play at the base, giving us the option of Dominguez in the current MGW role. Worth considering again with every supposed DM player playing themselves out the shirt every game.

Should he play on Sunday, it will be his 200th appearance for the club.

It's all about mid-table...
RY needs to move to another club wherever that may be.

His future is not here, he is being severely constrained and is doing himself no favours being loyal and servile.

Get ya sen out this purgatory and fulfil your destiny young man.

Bloody crying shame 😖

After a 9/10 performance v Fulham he had two poor games against Tottenham and Wolves. I can understand why he was dropped but I had a strong feeling when our line up was announced v Everton that we would lack a presence in midfield. Dominguez too lightweight and doesn't do the dirty work that Yates does. You could also argue Yates would've been the one to close down those Everton shots. We just let them run with the ball too often in the middle.

You have to take the rough with the smooth with Yates but when he doesn't play it's noticeable. No one puts in the same amount of effort and we need players to give their all right now.

We missed him v Everton. I understand it, and there was clamour from some to play that midfield, but as I said before the game we needed him. Wrong call him not starting for me.
Think Nuno got it wrong way round. Wolves at home, needed to be on front foot, needed more craft as we wud have more of ball, there less physical-so needed Dominique’s. Everton -they have size and quality in the middle, set pieces, away from home-Yates. Also think having Yates in, yes he has his limitations, but I think it allows Danille’s more freedom to play higher and link in with Mgw.

Said before, think the plan was

Sangare with Yates as the understudy / sub
Danilo or Dominguez

The issue has been Sangare being out of form / injured / not up to speed so Yates has had to play more than we’d planned. I’d start him Sunday and away at the blunts.

Nuno's just so incredibly behind the pace with his thinking at times it's unreal tbf.

A big part of us staying up is hoping for his winning formula to land right against the right opposition, because there's no way in hell he'll outthink any of them intentionally. Most opposition sides are usually several steps ahead of him.

I don't blame Nuno for starting Dominguez and Danilo together. The way to beating Everton was to play on the front foot, dominate possession, play in Everton's half and when countered give away fouls high up the pitch. So having your two best CM ball players made sense. Our problem was we didn't do any of those things, we sat quite deep out of possession and didn't press particularly well and didn't dominate possession.

Personally I'd have gone for 3 at the back with CHO and MGW behind Wood as it didn't feel like a game for Reyna, and having that third centre back would have given us the option to push one of them forward and engage higher up the pitch when we were being countered, which may have prevented the second goal, but Nuno seems to have settled on a 4231 so you could argue tearing that up for a new system wouldn't have helped with consistency gains either.

Man City is a bit of a write off but for the Sheff Utd game I'd probably bring Yates back into it alongside Danilo. Can probably afford to straddle both the defensive solidity and passing options because we should be stronger than Sheff Utd with pretty much any options we can pick, so doesn't make sense to unbalance ourselves either way. So for me that game is a 4231, Elanga back in on the right, and I would protect our players for that game over the weekend. Rotate the team fully if necessary. We stay up by winning 2 from our last 3 so all focus is on that. Man City game a total distraction.

In possession we were poor on Sunday too. Yates doesn't help there though.

Frankly our midfield two were so poor with and without the ball even Sangare couldn't have made it any worse.

It was a miracle that we created as much as we did and restricted Everton to two speculative long range efforts.

There's no denying he isn't a natural play maker but his progressive play has improved and he's nowhere near as detrimental in possession as people seem to claim, granted he's never going to be Pirlo on the ball but he doesn't need to be. His presence on the pitch is clear to see whenever he's playing (or not playing), he closes down space and makes the opposition uncomfortable which often leads to turnovers, a vital component to a counter attacking side. He doesn't need to be the one in charge of doing the dirty work and then producing killer passes, we have capable players around him, in theory, to take the ball and create plays

Does he give away free kicks? By the nature of his role in the team, yes, and to be honest this wouldn't be anywhere near as problematic if we were semi competent at defending set pieces to begin with. In my opinion the risk/reward is worth it, i'll have Yates + Danilo/Dominguez in midfield and accept some of the dirty work will result in free kicks over the invisible pairing we saw last weekend

A harsh criticism I have is that he still hasn't found the back of the net, granted it's not his responsibility but he gets his self in the right places at times and there's been enough chances for him to put at least one away. Another couple of goals from midfield would go a long way for us and he's capable
