Some players simply refuse to quit. Mathieu Valbuena played a couple of seasons more than he should have with us, because a fan favourite and the owner's favourite. Last season he played, as a 40-year-old, for Kallithea, who got relegated (but he was pretty decent). Everyone expected him to end his career and get a post in our coaching team, but he wants to play for our U23 in a dual role, both as a player (a few players above the age of 23 are allowed) and as a general manager of the team.

What a great little player he was.

Alf goes on about recruitment and gets pelters for it.

However, it's crazy Forest spent £13m on Joao Carvalho, and Majewski only cost £1m. Similar types of players and only one delivered really.

In fact, I think Tiago Silva for what he cost performed better than Carvalho.

There was more to the carvalho transfer than just that transfer fee. We will probably never know exactly but EM plays plenty of games and seems to be in with that world. Ok, he paid £13m of carvalho but last summer we got silly money for Mangala and Niakhate when we needed it, we got rid of the Greek keeper and got Anderson. In the lapse we had players bought for minimal amounts and sold on for silly money. Who was that keeper got for £0.5m and we sold on for £2m after a couple of shit appearances? It’s a strange world but I reckon under EM we have always come out on top overall.

Tiago was a brilliant little player. Been doing quite well for himself in Portugal where he was with Jota Silva.

I agree that fee was nonsense and some kind of creative accounting. But EM should have realised the amount of pressure it put on him. He was doomed from the start really.

That £13m for a random kid was the down payment to join the Jorge Mendes club with our expectation that by paying that we'd get favours like Wolves got when they went up.

Obviously didn't quite work out that way. Mendes seemed completely ambivalent towards us after, Marinakis fell out with Mendes and we were left lumbered with the cost of Carvalho and no pipeline of better players available to us.

Its no more illogical than legitimately paying £13m for Carvalho I agree, but why would be have to pay a massive fee to Benfica to join the 'Jorge Mendes club'? Surely we would just pay a normal fee and he gets a massive agents fee if thats the case

Who would've thought that investing in well-scouted/connected, quality players instead of playing agent-punt roulette would actually lead to a promotion? Truly groundbreaking stuff. Wish I'd have thought of it 😁

Thankfully, we're an entirely different beast now. Sure, we'll still land the odd stinker, but we've got our act together so much since those rather amateurish days.

I put it down to growing pains. EM did what worked in Greece, and it took him a while to learn the British Leagues are a whole other ball game. He's a good learner... for that I'm mighty grateful.

It wasn't just about money for Mendes. He values his influence particularly in Portugal. Selling us Carvalho for loads wasn't only for EM to get into Mendes goodbooks but for Mendes to get a good deal for Benfica strengthening his relationships there.

I just cant get my head around the logic of it. I get that Mendes or Benfica need money but by basically putting a price tag on his head that was probably 5x what his actual value was, was setting him up for failure - and therefore EM would not be pleased. Which they did fall out apparently not too long after but no idea if its related to this or not. I dont even know why I'm thinking about this
