January 2025 Transfer Window

Signing one player is a quiet window for us. We want a quiet window because we have a settled squad. We don’t want any unexpected departures, Danilo and Sangare are pretty much back. We want a striker to compete with Wood they will be a decent signing. Because if Taiwo leaves we would want 2 options and that is hard to do in January.
I have no problem with signing one player the issue I have is potentially signing a player who will have little to no impact like we did last January.

And I don’t think the club will be getting rid of Taiwo anytime soon unless he drops a real stinker against Southampton.

Artem Dovbyk would have been a good signing when he had that incredible 23/24 season for Girona.

Unfortunately Roma came along and snapped him up and he's banging in the goals in Serie A now. Very good at holding the ball up and defending from the front like Chris Wood and someone who's been more clinical in front of goal as he gains more experience.
As a Roma fan I’d hardly say Dovbyk is ‘banging in the goals’. He’s largely been pretty quiet and not had the scoring impact people were hoping for, at least not yet. I think he’ll come good but it’s not been an easy transition for him to Italy.

Scored in a win tonight though.

I don't think e have any now Henderson has resigned, which in itself is interesting as we'd have kept that open if we knew he could be registered at any time and we'd struggle to move players out.

Omobamidele will go, probably Toffolo too, and maybe a surprise or two/three.
Hennessy not Henderson. Athletic says Toff will stay

Fair enough. 11 goals in 26 games in his first season in Italy isn't too bad, though.

I don't think we'll buy just for the sake of it, whereas previously we were obligated to try anything just to stay in the league. One "stellar" signing would be lovely. Don't doubt the big man.

Also, it might never happen.

Did anyone else laugh out loud at the Athletic quote "quiet and considered"?

As f***ing if the Big Man will be quiet and considered with a minimum of 35mil burning a hole in his pocket when we're sitting in 3rd. He'll be like John Wayne come Deadline Day.

Yeah…it sounds like smoke and mirrors to me.

Nuno isn’t going to say publicly that they are looking to move players out when he might need them over the next three games.

We also don’t want agents / teams to think we want 2-3 players which might drive the price up and any departing players prices down.

Just because we only have one squad place left doesn’t mean we will only sign one player either. A couple of U21s are more than possible and are unlikely to demand game time.

If it is only one player, then you can see why Wissa (or Alberto) is a target. Someone who can play multiple positions and who is unlikely to impact team spirit.

Not signing 6 or 7 would be quiet and considered for EM.

This is all media smoke and mirrors to help with negotiations.

I do think we are targeting one bigger signing (Wissa or a.n other) and probably a younger up and coming south American.

But if quality comes available at a semi reasonable price and we have PSR headroom there’s no way that we don’t pull the trigger. The likes of moving on/deregistering Toff or Andy A isn’t going to stop us when we have the CL in our sights.

Don't we get to rearrange out 25 man squad at some point mid-season after the January window? Like when we removed Steve Cook from our 25 man squad in our first season back and couldn't put him back in after the deadline when we had some injuries? We also couldn't put LOB back in after his January move to Blackburn collapsed if I remember correctly.

If so, we could just not put players that are surplus to requirements in the 25 man squad the next time we have to name the squad, should we sign more than 1 player...

Yes. That's the point. You either have to get rid of them or put them in the bomb squad to bring anyone else in. The later being far from preferable.

It's not preferable of course, but we shouldn't miss out on a player who might be a game changer for us just because we'd have to delist someone we aren't using from the squad either.

Say for example we sign a striker but then a player of Douglas Luiz's calibre becomes available to us late in the window...

I think we'll see Toffolo and Omobamidele leave this month at the very least anyway, plus potentially a few others.

Andy Reid expects Andrew Omobamidele to leave in January

Speaking on the Off The Ball show, Andy Reid, who is a member of Espirito Santo’s Forest coaching staff, gave a telling update on the future of Irish defender, Andrew Omobamidele.

Reid said: “It’s been a tough enough period for him […], opportunities have been limited for him so I think he needs to go and play some football.

“I imagine he’ll find something that lets him get on the football pitch as opportunities are limited for him at the moment, unfortunately.

Jamie Gittens, Dortmund, is the young forward talent most top PL sides seem to be tracking, amongst others around Europe. We were linked back in October. Arsenal heavily linked whilst under Edu’s watch.

Still only 20. That would be a statement move.

I’d keep Toffolo, seems like an integral part of the squad to me.
I’m not saying I’d just dump him for no reason.

But if, let’s say, Douglas Luiz is a possibility on deadline day, you don’t say ‘No thanks, we can’t dump Toff’
