Filippo Giraldi - Former Sporting Director

When most would have gone for Wilder, Murphy picked Cooper, that in itself has me believe the bloke knows what he's doing. Theres a few unanswered questions with the new recruits, but not enough to suggest we need to rip the whole thing up.

We seem to always default to a Too many cooks approach when theres people at the club in the key positions that know what the f*** theyre doing.

Wasnt it a sporting director that f**ked about with Karanka?
Vrentosz wasn’t it who annoyed Aitor? Saying that he could have an argument with himself.

Why don’t we get a finance / commercial director as we are a total mess at that side of things?
Now that's one area I have criticism of DM. It's something he should have been over and it's been neglected to the point of it being a shambolic mess as you say. At the very least Dane should have recruited someone to oversee it properly.

I always thought CEO was the wrong title for Dane to be honest.

I don’t even think we’ve signed bad players, this whole situation is a mess.

Also if our new sporting director is in charge of hiring/firing we will have about 5 managers this month if Watford are owt to go by.
Out of interest, was it a mess after three games when we had a win and a draw, or is it just a mess now because we've lost five in a row? Think we all get carried away at times depending on results, in the summer Marinikas was the best owner ever and now he's making a mess.

It’s been a bit of mess since we bought a whole team, then decided we needed a second one.

I was saying we need to stop from about signing 15.

The losses and the sacking everyone business have only added to the mess.

I agree re signings, but no-one has been sacked as yet, to my knowledge.

Mixed views about this one. On one hand, his track record when it comes to finding and signing players at Watford is actually decent. On the other hand, he seems to be someone who constantly interferes with what the manager is doing from what I've read.

He sacks lots of managers too, but we are hardly much better than Watford were under him in that regard so that's just a continuation of the norm here.

Whether this bloke is a good or bad appointment, he appears to have an eye for a player if that list of his signings is anything to go by.

However, it's a shame that Dane Murphy's tenure appears to be over. Contrary to the general uninformed media view, the squad needed the big overhaul that Dane delivered, even if the jury is still out on some of the signings. I was convinced that his largely data-driven recruitment process was a positive move, and it seems a bit early to completely abandon it for the old-school 'recommend and scout' method that Giraldi appears to represent.

Could have been worse. We could have ended up with Kwasi Kwarteng.

Oh, I don‘t know - if old Kwasi had brought his calculator, Forest would never have been anywhere near trouble with Financial Fair Play?

I agree. With his type of scouting you will never know how successful it has been until well down the line. Even if the player fails here due to lack of form or poor team displays it doesn’t necessarily mean the player was a poor choice. It is bad enough to sack a manager without giving him enough games, let alone someone who spots and recruits players.

I thought the whole new way was this guy stays in place, the methodology and identity stays the same and when a head coach goes the whole thing doesn’t go out the window, you just being in a new head coach whose methods work with the players you tend to recruit. This avoids wholesale squad changes with every new manager.

It seems strange to now sack the man who lays out the identity. What do we do now? Sack a manager and a CEO / sporting director every 3 months?

Other teams have a set piece coach or a throw in coach, we just get people with grand sounding titles, discover they don't know what they are doing and send them away. Meanwhile our set pieces are dreadful and our throw ins are more throw aways.

We need planning and someone who knows what they are doing and runs a tight ship.

Worry ye not, we still have dear old Randall.

Right, I’ve no idea how our football club is going to be run but I’m going to go with the following diagram I’ve just knocked up. By the way, Randall is outside of this as he’s Chairman.

Prior to this it was presumably CEO and Owner making football decisions in conjunction with Head of Recruitment, whoever that is (and indeed if there is one). That role may even have been Cooper and Scouts / Dane which in itself is a bit circular and lacks accountability.

Now, you’ll have a Sporting Director making decisions in conjunction with CEO having already had agreement with his team which includes recruitment and head coaches.

Strategy from the top, filtering down to appropriate functions. Dane may have had too much to do and dropped a bollock in a few areas and that remains to be seen BUT this structure should help things along.

It’s possible that Dane is expendable and Charnley takes his job or alternatively Charnley has said, this is the structure you need so go out and get a Sporting Director. Charnley may end up as CEO but I think his advice on structure has been taken here and it seems pretty sensible. Maybe everyone keeps their job and the new guy is the missing piece.

I may have just made all that up of course.

Unless I'm mistaken, isn't that what happened when Watford had 4-or-5 managers during a PL promotion season when this bloke was there?

Some of the ones who look the biz have been hampered by injury. Niakhate and Mangala if they kick in now could certainly increase their value.

Our problem is too much disruption

For some reason they’ve concluded that the solution to this is a load more disruption

We don’t know what Murphy does on a Tuesday morning, but he’s synonymous with getting Barnsley to the play offs and Forest to the Prem. Charnley and this new guy are synonymous with chaos at Watford and Newcastle

Regardless of the specifics, it’s really negative to have a sense within an organisation that everyone is easily expendable. I’m thinking Lolley, BOXT, Cooper, Dane…the club looks to many like it’s got too big for its boots and is treating loyal people disrespectfully

It's all about mid-table...
Why cant we go back to managers picking their players based on their knowledge and wisdom?

All this background stuff is fukin nonsense, brought about by "know fuk all about football" owners from any country in the world bar fukin England.

It's just a thought, and I know it might go against the general narrative, but could Giraldi have "fallen out" with the Pozzo family over its hire-and-rapidly fire policy which he was having to operate?

I doubt he'd have had the power at Watford to just sack and pay-off managers as he felt fit.

Mr Realistic
I'd love to know what the actual job roles entail for:

Sporting director
Technical director
Chairman
CEO
Head of recruitment (self explanatory but does it overlap with the others)
Chief scout (see above)
Director of football

And head of recruiting should be a bloke in an overcoat and flat cap standing in the crowd and nipping down the dog track to spy on target
