Clough wrote about his poor treatment of fashanu, and i think it was his biggest regret after not reconnecting with Peter Taylor before he died.

The fact no gay footballer has dared come out since is a blight on the game. Certainly little fear of having a footballer ram their sexuality down your throat! Just fear of being insulted, discriminated against, and assaulted because of who you are, not what you’ve done.

Graeme le Saux received homophobic abuse for attending uni and reading The Guardian. And he's heterosexual. Who can blame gay players for not coming out when it's obvious what flack they'll receive? (no pun intended). Even in this day and age.

That was a long time ago. Attitudes have changed a lot in the intervening 25 years. I doubt most would bat an eyelid these days.

It would more likely be a competition between players battling to win the most virtuous award on social media.

Not from the fans but the media will have an absolute field-day about it (far bigger than Schofield). They've been waiting for a gay foitballer to come out for years and the poor f***er that does come out will not be known for their footballing abilities at all.

It goes against every belief that I hold but if I was a gay footballer I'd keep quiet until I'd retired unless I was outed.

I'd be straight out and cash in on the commercial opportunities, first one out will earn an absolute fortune.

I think you may be underestimating things, otherwise whatever possible reason could there be for gay footballers being unwilling to come out? For popstars and actors there's their fanbase to consider, the fear of adversely influencing a big part of one's demographic. But footballers are, for the most part, not party to such constraints. Maybe Ronaldo, Beckham, etc. A tiny percentage.

Ronaldo will probably come out once he’s retired, I don’t think Beckham is gay although he may help them out at weekends when they’re busy

Heard someone on the radio the other morning and they were talking about gay sports people (after the Fashanu Hall of Fame thing) and the conversation got on to gay female footballers which naturally led to a discussion about gay footballers in thjis, so-called, enlightened age.

She said she knew lots of gay players in Premier League teams. Which leads to the conclusion that players are so shy about their sexuality that they don't come out even after retiring. Mind you, that Welsh rugby chap is having a rough time of it (in the media sense) so perhaps the others are wise to keep quiet.

It's unfortunate that the flipside is he could never be cleared either and it may have proven to be a baseless accusation for all any of us know.
On that basis, I'd have to apply the old 'innocent until proven guilty' principle.

I hate to speak ill of people who are no longer with us to defend themselves, but there were rumblings of inappropriate relations with under aged lads before he left the UK, then again in Canada, and finally in the USA where it hit the press. Of course the truth will never fully be revealed, but I was under the impression that was why Mr Clough was not impressed with Justin Fashanu and shipped him out rather than make waves.

There was a documentary came out a while back about Fashanu, focused a lot on his wasted talent compared to his brother, but the later parts of the documentary do show interviews and press reports of some of the allegations against him. The final parts in the USA were very suggestive of what they thought happened.

If I remember correctly he fled the States and came back to the UK before any trial and claimed the alleged victim was trying to blackmail him / get money from his brother John, and sadly he hung himself in a garage in Shoreditch.
He was in the state of Marland where at the time homosexual acts were illegal and he was black.
Bound to get a fair trial in the good old US of A.
