Justin finally gets recognised. I used to do a bit of taxi driving in Nottingham and remember running Justin all around Nottingham looking for a second hand vacuum cleaner. He lived in the park estate at the time and the taxi fare came to more than the vacuum, although I would imagine Forest picked the bill up for that.
RIP Justin. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/amp/football/51546171

First openly gay footballer, first black player to cost a million, and BC’s worst signing for Forest.

So do players usually get inducted for their footballing ability? I'm unfamiliar with this hall of fame and just want to know if this kind of induction Is par for the course or if they're going out of their way to honour him.

I imagine that much of the problem was down to his being gay in times when attitudes were far more anti gay than today. There are stories that Cloughie gave him a hard time because he thought Fash was gay. Happy players play better than scared players so there is little wonder if that's true that he couldn't give his best. I suspect that had he not had that pressure on him things would have turned out different.

It's for "an outstanding contribution". I doubt they were referring to his 3 goals in 32 appearances at Forest.

For me, the episode with Fash was the only thing that tarnished Brian's record.

We can only speculate about what might have been had their relationship not soured so quickly, but that it did was down to Clough's homophobia and not Fashanu's sexuality.

Clough was tolerant of all sorts of players in his various squads, and some of them were utter degenerates, but its no secret he didn't like 'poofters'.

Who does!
(That's from Monty Python btw, not a personal opinion).

Ah okay.

Well if this induction brings happiness to the players who are in the closet then I'm all for it.

Not sure why a shit footballer belongs in a football hall of fame.

The accusations before his death apparently have been completely ignored?

It's a Hall of Fame, not a Hall of Greatness - which of course gives certain licence to players who have achieved fame (or infamy) for other reasons than actually being any good.

I’ll rephrase it then, not sure someone accused of sexual assault belongs in a football hall of fame.

If I remember correctly he fled the States and came back to the UK before any trial and claimed the alleged victim was trying to blackmail him / get money from his brother John, and sadly he hung himself in a garage in Shoreditch.

And his 3 goals in 32 games for £1m probably didn’t help the relationship either.

& the fact that he was an absolute nuisance off the pitch, apparently rocking up at training with his personal masseuse, accumulating parking tickets all over Nottingham that he didn’t bother to pay leading the police to contact BC directly but yeah Cloughie’s issue with Fashunu was his sexuality

I may be wrong, but I believe he fled the US stating he wouldn’t receive a fair trial due to his sexuality and then hung himself rather than be sent back to the US for trial.

Yes, you're right more or less looking here

(Dublin Evening Herald, May 08, 1998 )

Fashanu, who was found hanged, left a letter in a personal organiser denying claims that he sexually
assaulted the youth in America. The former England under-21 wrote: "I want to say that I did never
and have never sexually assaulted that young man.
"Yes we did have a relationship of mutual consent but the next day he demanded money off me.
When I said no, he said `You wait and see’."

The three-page note ends: "I hear you say, ‘WelI why run if you’re innocent?’ Well justice isn’t always
fair. Silly thing really, but you know what happens when you panic."

I don't mind folk telling me their gay, I just don't want them ramming it down my throat.

Due to his suicide yes he died innocent. We will never know if he did what he was accused of but personally I wouldn’t recognise someone with allegations hanging over them.

It's unfortunate that the flipside is he could never be cleared either and it may have proven to be a baseless accusation for all any of us know.
On that basis, I'd have to apply the old 'innocent until proven guilty' principle.
