Dane Murphy - ex-CEO

I know that I can possibly be accused of defending Arthur by saying this, but is that Charnley's responsibility as CEO or Mike Ashley's as the owner?
That is a difficult question to answer and he may suffer for being associated to Mike Ashley.

This is a good article if you have a spare 20 minutes on who exactly Charnley is. https://theathletic.com/2630880/202...acter-who-runs-mike-ashleys-newcastle-united/

My conclusion from that article and comments is that he is a yes man, promoted beyond his intelligence levels, but was set up to fail and is a decent bloke. Sounds like he would be a good club secretary/useful in carrying on in his advisory role for operations management.

I do hope we recruit a quality CEO though befit of our Premier League status and are not saddled with Ventros/Charnley.

Before I read that, and I will, my first thoughts are that there will be plenty of Newcastle fans to write that article for and very few Lee Charnley fans. Not to say it's incorrect or not worth reading, but I assume a certain bias and like most things it will be written to gain clicks/subs.

(That said I've no horse in this race - I know as much about Charnley as I do Murphy if I'm honest. Arthur too, though he was regarded by the few I've spoken with who did know him as a bit of a prick.)

Lol - and after all I said I can't read it because it's behind a paywall!

I found it quite balanced hence why I've referenced it from a reputable organisation. After my flippant remark yesterday I did a bit of research on Newcastle sites and they were just slagging him off, which is why I didn't bother linking them to this thread.

Surely the quality of the job you do as a CEO depends entirely on the owner you work for and what he expects from you.

A CEO can be hated by fans but loved by the owner because the vision isn't aligned with the fanbase.

Equally a genuinely World Class operator as CEO would never be able to do a good job if he was working under somebody like Mad Mel or Fawaz.

From what I remember (which may not be correct!), the criticism of Charnley had more to do with his involvement on the football side of things rather than the performance of every day CEO duties?

If so, Giraldi will be the one responsible for the football stuff here anyway.
I think your correct, I’m sure he was appointing managers etc which is probably going to be Giraldis job now as well as signing players.

If he sticks to the off field stuff we shouldn’t really here much about him.

One of the things I loved about Murphy is that he got the club structured and working properly, with the men in suits pulled away from interfering with footballing duties. It's no secret that Vrentzos was largely disliked for getting on the case of coaches doing their day to day duties and creating a bad vibe around the place in the process pre-Murphs. This is something I really hope we don't revert to with any of the suits here now. It's a rotten way to operate, and could take us all the way back down to Champ relegation fodder if it's allowed to happen again.

We need a CEO who lets Cooper do his thing his way, with absolute minimal interference.

I'm too hope we don't revert to our pre-Murphy ways. Fine with Charnley becoming CEO if he stays away from football matters and leaves it to Cooper and Giraldi, but not if he starts poking his nose into matters that should be left to the football people at the club like Vrentzos did..

His actual time as owner isn't what we should be thankful for

The fact that Nottingham Forest FC might not even exist today were it not for him, however, very much is
Totally agree, without him we would have probably gone to the wall. I like how everyone slating him would probably never put their own money into the club, even if I had the money he had to bankroll forest is a big ask. Even how shit fawaz was I think he played a positive impact in forests history.

A lot of fans did indeed put their hard-earned into the club by buying shares in large numbers, all of which became totally worthless as part of ND's scheme to acquire ownership the club.

The Athletic must be close to going bust.
The Mrs got me a subscription at £60 for the year 2 years ago, and I thought the coverage of football in generalwas pants.
No cricket correspondent either!
OK: Daniel Taylor and the other one wrote some decent articles about Forest, but they didn't appear every week.
Anyway, I resisted the temptation of the £1 per issue special offer late December.
Now, in January it is £1.99 per issue.
And even at the £1 I thought it was a poor investment.

Everyone to their own Cap, I paid £1 per month and will pay £1.99 per month when I renew.

I go onto The Athletic every day and probably read about half a dozen articles per day.
