Nottingham's dirty secret
I'd sooner us have the bottle to wait it out than consider anyone like Akpom.

We don't need a striker to stay up, we need one to move us to the next level of the Prem, i.e. mid-table. It would be ideal, but not essential.

It's pointless us pushing on to that level if it isn't done right and for the long term, which I don't think a player like Akpom would be.

I think we're far better off going for an 18-24 year old who just needs to mature, and giving them a year under Wood + Awoniyi, for a reasonable price, than going for someone like Akpom.
Danny Ings you say Alf? 😭🤣

Exactly this. We don’t need to be adding future bomb squad members.

Anyone we sign either needs to be an upgrade on our starting XI or a youngster who we expect to become an improvement on our starting XI in the future.

The last thing we need to be doing is scrabbling around trying to add bodies.

Had there been an actual credible like at all for this?

I am not sure why the thread keeps getting bumped purely because we made a failed bid in January on deadline day.

I’ve been fortunate enough to see seriously good strikers at this club-Baker,Storey-Moore,McKenzie,Woodcock,
Withe,Birtles,Francis,Davenport,Clough,Collymore and Campbell come to mind.
I’m afraid our strikers since haven’t been good enough-either biscuits or simply not up to it-a large reason why we
have been unsuccessful over the past 26 years.
Those strikers you mention didn't do it in isolation Cloughie, they largely had the good fortune of having top creative players to supply them, and (McKenzie aside) mainly in the top flight.

I'd argue that we've had some decent centre-forwards in more recent years - Grabban, Earnshaw, Blackstock, Johnson, Lester, Harewood - that compared reasonably well in terms of the level we were at.

According to the BBC Ajax are about to sign Wout Weghorst from Burnley. Could this be in expectation of the talented Mr Akpom finally moving on? Destiny...

Really difficult discussions but not difficult comparisons here.

The game is so different. Those of us who were lucky enough to live through 60’s-80’s have seen the best years of our 150 year history - we are so lucky

By what they achieved the players at that time will always be eulogised as the best ever - and they were - but they were all part of top teams (McKenzie accepted - but he never really delivered in Div 1)

The 2nd set of players were good players performing in poor teams - non of them were good enough to excel at the top level. But unfortunately we have a whole generation of fans who are not fortunate enough to know any better.

Hopefully these next few years will give them the opportunity to get a glimpse of what we were so fortunate to watch

Never delivered in the 1st Division?
McKenzie scored virtually a goal every other game at Leeds and did well at Everton.
He was class.

I need to check my memory bank - I really don't remember it that way
Certainly @ Leeds - they didn't want to play on e of Cloughies signings.

That really wasn't the point of the discussion.
