What's odd is how many fans would turn their back on that because it doesn't fit into the current trend of what's supposedly successful.

I'm more than happy to give Murphy and this model several chances over several seasons, but would I scrap all that for Clough MK2? In. A. f***ing. Heartbeat.

What tends to be overlooked Alf is that Cloughie was able to have an almost-autocrat-like dominance at Forest, solely because of the club's unique stewardship structure at the time; a non-executive committee elected by the 200 members for a set period of time (the chairman/vice-chairman being elected by said committee also for a set time period), none of whom were expected to invest or loan money, but essentially acted as guarantors for an overdraft arrangement with the NatWest Bank.

Thankfully for us supporters, that is the primary reason why he never moved-on to a so-called "bigger" club, whereby he would have been immediately accountable to directors. It's no coincidence that wheels were almost immediately put-in-motion to radically change the constitution following his retirement. The fact that they managed to make a f***-up of that by selling it to bunch of carpetbaggers is of course another story altogether.

We're sitting here speculating whether Brennan and Joe Worrall will go and it's only a few days to the start of yet another promotion slog.

I suppose most other clubs are in exactly the same position, trying to work out their best strategy for the season. Sell X to buy Y, or perhaps keep A and add B.

Quite a teaser this year above all others. With, of course, the parachute clubs pulling the main strings.

Contract talks have stalled according to The Athletic. Not over wages but over a potential release clause and the length of the contract.

So basically we want to tie him down long term with a high release clause and his camp want a shorter deal and something like a <£10m release clause so it's easy for him to get out.

Saw this Twitter interaction the other day comparing Johnson's value to Morgan Rogers after the season they both had at Lincoln. DJ commented on it seemingly playing Brennan's value down:

I interpret that as David trying to justify his lad being of a similiar value to Morgan and the better deal by comparison, as he cost Forest nothing.

A number of things effect a player's market value. Their experience up until now, their potential over the next few years, the amount of time left on their contract, whether they can play in different positions, their nationality etc..
Cash for example, if you remember, Leipzig were interested in him for 6m euros when he was still a central midfielder. Once he could play right back as well and had that season under his belt, his value went through the roof.

The reality of where we are is that Brennan won't remain with us until the end of whatever contract he has. He currently has two years left on his current deal and I'd imagine he's on what.. 2-4k a week?
If there was any kind of current release clause, I think a club would have triggered it so the current contract doesn't really do much for him.

I don't see him staying with us beyond this season, similar to how Cash and Burke went but Forest value him at £10m currently right?
If he signs a new deal, say until 2024, then his value goes up but then if he signs a new contract with a release fee of say £10-£12m and he has a fantastic season, he'll be worth a lot more than £10m so we'd be leaving some serious money on the table.

As much as I'd like him to stay and grow as part of this new team, players come and go. There was a prospect after Burke and after Cash, there will be one after Johnson, especially with a Category One academy.

The fact he has 2 years to run means he isn’t in the strongest position himself. If he is on £2k to £4k and he doesn’t sign a new one I think it is really risky for him. He could get a bad injury, things may not work out and he could be on the scrap heap. If he signs a 5 year on £10k - £15k then at least he has sealed his financial future and if he does well he will get mopped up anyway for bigger money.

From Forest’s point of view I think we are right to not put a low buy out clause in. Let him play on the contract he is on. If he has a storming season then we will get big money. If that money doesn’t come next summer because he only has one year left then Keep him, he is still on low wages and if he has two storming seasons we have had two storming seasons out of a player on hardly any money and surely the tribunal will set a decent fee anyway.

Spot on mate.

As much as I respect BJ & DJ's stance to get themselves the best deal, they need to put it into perspective too. And that is that the club holds all the cards here.

I don't think that there's any sourness in this tbh. Both sides are just doing what's right from their side and it's dragging out because there's no pressure to get a deal done because of the current contract length.

But if I were the club I'd genuinely offer a final contract to Johnson's family this week with no further negotiations until next pre-season at the earliest. The Johnson's may hold a pair of aces, but the club has way more chips in the bank and pretty much every scenario plays out to the club's advantage.

The only situation that is bad for the club is if he sulks. But then it is totally detrimental to him as well. I think young players are crazy nowadays. He can’t have earned very much out of the game, it is a brutal game that has left many careers in tatters. If someone puts a good offer on the table that secures your financial status for life almost then I can’t understand not signing it. It is very risky. Get it signed, put it out your mind and relax and play football and drive on.

I know he's his dad but I do wish DJ would not bother commenting on anything regarding his son, you can see how it is gonna go.

It is not gonna end well, every word he says will be hyper analysed & the abuse will come when things don't suit Forest.

As for Brennan himself he has that trait in looking dangerous everytime he gets the ball, that is the best trait you can have as a footballer. For me he is gonna make things happen this season, he looked like a man - and another player where the loan looks to have paid off big time.

I have felt all summer too much expectation is being put on him but he looks like he can deal with it.

I do agree he looked the part specifically in the first half, but i'd like to see him tested against a more competent and organized defensive setup than Coventry (with all due respect) before I get too carried away. But it was definitely a promising start

He makes Anel's dad seem like a model of modesty and restraint.

I dunno which is worse, having a dad always preaching about how good Anel is, or having one who is always talking about his little Johnson.

Nothing wrong with extolling the virtues of a BJ

I think this sounds a lot like the club are having the same issues with Mr Johnson that they did with Mr Bamford years ago

I do think a lot of this is a result of the clubs atrocious transfer dealings and general inept management under the current ownership, i'd find it very hard to go into any negotiations with any respect or trust..
