Therefore FFP is working. They don’t want clubs like ours and others to improve and challenge the elite, they want us to shut up and rot, something we’ve done a good job of so far.
I'd prefer to see FFP and parachute payments scrapped and replaced by a salary cap based on turnover(say a
maximum of 70% of turnover is allowable on salaries).

If DM has this non-negotiable playing style, then he would need to buy CH a whole new team because we are not set up with Grabban, Lolley and Carvalho to play a high press.

Personally I think with the financial constraints this season any idealism about playing styles would have to be put on the back burner, if it even exists.

Well we didn't play a press for the whole of last season. A big part of the problem last season was the opposite, we sat so deep we were pretty much on our 18 yard line every time we didn't have possession, conveniently making the pitch as large as possible for the opposition and giving the forward players very little chance to pressure the ball..
Personally I'd like to see us much more compact and playing a pressing game-its the modern way and it works well, as illustrated by the fact we couldn't cope with teams that pressed us effectively

Interesting how folks perceptions of our playing styles differ. Hughtons pragmatism is a given, but my interpretation, certainly the latter part of the season was a team with sustained posession, higher up the pitch. certainly higher than we ever enjoyed under Karanka or Lamouchi.

Don't see an issue with a high press personally, Johnson, Mighten, Grabban, Lolley, Carvalho all look more than capable to me.

You know, I often read a lot of pieces about how Mr. Clough wouldn’t have been a success in the modern game, because he was a demanding, domineering communicator who formed his sides (several of them) in his own image.

And then I think of someone like Diego Simeone, a demanding, domineering communicator who forms his sides (several of them) in his own image, and I reckon Mr. Clough would have done just fine.

What's odd is how many fans would turn their back on that because it doesn't fit into the current trend of what's supposedly successful.

I'm more than happy to give Murphy and this model several chances over several seasons, but would I scrap all that for Clough MK2? In. A. f***ing. Heartbeat.

Well yes that's my point. Lamouchi built the squad to play deep and counter attack. CH has had to work with that squad mostly, he hasn't been given much opportunity to sign players to change it, so I don't think it is fair to say he definitely doesn't want to play like that.

I agree with Mase that it got better towards the end of the season particularly with Krovinovic nd Mighten.

...Whilst I have some sympathy with the idea that much of our squad was incapable you don't have to sign players to get the centre halves to push another 10-15 years forward and compress the pitch a bit. I got hoarse last year screaming at the laptop for them to push up, it showed a real lack of confidence in our team IMO and made several players look far worse than they actually are...

Our defence sat really deep under Lamouchi and soaked up plenty of pressure, yet at least early on in the season we got the ball forward quickly, had overlapping aggressive fullbacks and filled the box with onrushing midfielders.

If anything Hughton's approach is more dull despite us playing slightly higher up the pitch because it's a slower build up with fewer players in the box.

'' Low Block '' - '' High Press '' - I am gonna do a few of each in rapid succession - Just to relieve the tension of this transfer window you understand :)

We got players in the box? That must have been an accident.

They got lost, trying to find the dressing room.

For Sabri it really helped having Cash and an in form Lolley. Take that away (as we did) and it’s not surprising we looked less run away train and more tug boat when we obtained possession deep in our own half.

Cash was the key player in Lamouchi's team.

Once he was sold, the balance of the team, the defensive solidity and attacking threat on the right-side completely disappeared.

Most of our counter-attacking came from Cash and the opposition were always wary. Without Cash (when he was injured or sold), we looked shaky and lacking in balance.

I've said it time and again, full-back is the most important position in modern football for all the reasons above. Forest need good ones ASAP otherwise I worry about the team.

It is rare you see good sides with poor fullbacks.

Man City after they finished 3rd went out and spent a fortune on 3 fullbacks and ended up breaking the Prem points record.

Never mind good ones we could do with any at the minute

You are right about full backs being extremely important, we can’t cheap out on full backs if we want to push forward.

You are completely correct.
And that’s why they are so expensive these days…

I wouldn't mind Viv Anderson and Stuart Pearce in the current team.

There's a few around who have been released and are free agents.

If we're nearing towards the end of this week still in the same situation, I'd go out and sign Neil Taylor on a short term deal. Elmohammedy too. That's two very decent and experienced full-backs, and that's just from Villa.

Nathaniel Clyne's another one. We need to get moving.

If what you've tried before hasn't worked, do it again but harder

Tbf most of our expensive f*** ups are long term - so short term would be an improvement
