The Relegation Dogfight 23/24

West Ham fans are absolute whoppers, the lot of em. Where do they actually think they can get in terms of league position? Thyeve won f*** all since I was born until they managed to win a piss pot European trophy last season and finished 7th.

What exactly is the logic behind the way their fans think?
A West Ham fan on the radio earlier said he expected 'top 6' this year 'because they won a trophy last year'. Ignoring that they sold their best player in the summer, of course. Wally.

It's a bit like Leicester fans booing Brendan Rogers a few months after winning the FA Cup.

Could see him finishing at Celtic if everything lines up. Don’t think he’s much else to prove in the prem and he’s not going to get a top 6 job.
Not a bad shout that. Wouldn't be surprised at either

From what I understand they aspire to be
They're litterally the opposite of a counter-attacking team. They are possession team whose approach is dominate the play by overloading the opposition's half.

They're at their most dominant when they will have only have two players on the half way line, everyone else in the opponent's half. The fullbacks will be pushed up and tucked-in along side the midfield pivot leaving 5 players to attack the box.

They have two approaches to building that positional pressure. They build out from the back with each movement through the thirds, they're commiting more men ahead of the ball until they have the shape for their overpowering attacks.

In defence, while not quite a geigen-press, this positional shape makes it hard for teams to play around them and they're looking for mistakes that can quickly transition into their overpowering attacks.

The teams that have the most joy against them are counter- attacking sides because of how much space they leave in behind.

If you look on the Brennan Johnson thread, you'll see a lot of the talk there is about how ineffective he is in their system because he's best in a counter-attacking side and they are not that. In his Spurs role, they want his explosive pace to be delivered over 10-15 yards. At Forest he would be given 40-50 yards.

The reason Spurs fans love Ange-ball is that it's not counter-attacking, which is what they had under Conte, Nuno and Mourhino.

I don't belive counter-attacking football is a Postecoglou aspiration at all.

There are many different things which could happen before now and when we kick off at 5:30pm on Saturday.

One thing we know for a fact right now is safety is guaranteed with a win against Chelsea. The squad need to try and block out all other background noise out for now, they can't control that, and focus on a plan to secure the 3 points at the weekend. If we d9 that everything else is irrelevant.

With all the shit going on at West Ham at the moment I could see the Luton game going either way, and that's what is worrying. It should be a forgone conclusion but its not.

I think the opposite. West Ham have conceded 15 goals in their last 5 games over a period of time when noise about Moyes going was reaching fever pitch (a timely reminder to some that undermining the manager in the public domain leads to negative results).

Having a degree of certainty will refocus players minds. Lopetgui will almost certainly be watching over the weekend so it's in the players interest not to be shit like they have been recently.

Give it a rest Max.
SC wasn't undermined at the beginning of the season when we didn't beat Luton, Burnley, Brentford and Everton, the table shows that apart from Sheff Utd (who we beat in injury time) these were our easiest matches of the season and all at home - and we won none of them.
That is why SC got sacked and why we aren't 8 points better off in mid table.

Cooper: Lost to Everton, Drew with Brentford and Burnley, beat Sheff Utd. Points: 5.
Nuno: Lost to Everton and Brentford, beat Sheff Utd, Burnley still to go. Points 3, max 6.

I'm sure you'll argue that home matches are much more favourable than away games but that doesn't apply with Nuno who's 50/50 away wins and home wins.

Anyway, I expect West Ham to get a result vs Luton. That was the main point of my post and thanks for ignoring it completely.

Am I right in saying a draw against Chelsea means Burnley can’t catch us and Luton would need to win both their remaking matches ?

Correct.

Of course Home matches are more favorable than away matches and they were definitely lost points which helped cost SC his job.

Back on topic - I hope you are right - West Ham are really difficult to predict though.
Luton are really poor though and I expect you to be right (y)

The one good thing about this season hopefully ending for us before 5PM on Saturday is the forum bickering can stop for a bit and we can look forward to another season at this level and another shot at a best finish in 25+years. We're all Forest fans end of the day.

Oh, how I wish and hope that is the case.

I have to tell you, it’s been a chore at times, this season.
