Summer 24 Transfer Window

Whats everyone saying for there ideal summer of transfers if we stop up, Mine would be:

Backup keeper if we can Turner and Vlach off the books
Right back for cover for Williams but maybe a player that can cover left back aswell unless Richards can prove his fitness
Right sided center back cover for Omo and Boly if he gets a extension
2 Left sided center back if we loose Murillo
Back up cam for MGW and 2 if we loose him
Winger that can play both sides cover for CHO and Elanga
Back up striker something different to Wood and Taiwo
I’d agree with that.

Possibly Gil and Reyna (again) on loan with an OTB. Both are out of contract in 2026.

A CB, LB, WGR and FWD top the list.

I suspect we're not going to do anywhere near the sort of transfer activity some people will want because of FFP. If we go down I'd be willing to bet we do not buy a single player, we would sell MGW & Murillo, and a couple of others, and try and loan in replacements.

Assuming we stay up, we probably only need to make one big sale, and I suspect the club woud rather sanction Murillo rather than MGW. MGW would perhaps need to be sold the following year..

Squad after letting the loans go back, selling Murillo and offloading/bomb-squading the not wanted players would look like this:

GK: Sels, Turner
RB: Williams, Aina
RCB: Boly, Omobamidele
LCB: Niakhate, ???
LB: ???, Toffolo
RCM: Sangare, Yates
LCM: Dominguez, Danilo
RW: Elanga, ???
AM: MGW, Aguilera
LW: CHO, ???
ST: Awoniyi, Wood, ???

We probably can't offload Sangare as we'd need to sell him for more than £20m to break even on his FFP calculation and I just can't see that coming, so we'll need to make him work.

We probably have <£20m to spend on filling the question mark gaps. I'd probably split that equally between the first choice left back and the backup winger. Then use loans to fill backup LCB (or see if Worrall wants to come back, door is open for me as 4th choice CB) and the 3rd choice striker.

Not particularly exciting but that's pragmatism and realism.

Think Gil can play on the left and right side so someone like him would be ideal, same for Reyna if he wants to come back of course and if we loose MGW he would be my number one target to be honest, for the left back id look at lief davis at Ipswich, and for forward line id dip back in the Brazilian market there is loads of talent over there and center back id look at Nelson Abby but i dont know if it would be to big of a step up for him

Sure, why not spend another £20m on goalkeepers
He’d be more than that.

The scousers wanted 25m last summer, apparently. And the player has played more in the PL this season.

In the miraculous event we stay up I mostly agree, but if selling Mangala and some fringe players in June could get us clear of FFP trouble this season (possibly a difficult ask), we might not have to sell anyone at all to stay on top of FFP the following season. Remember a third season in the premier league gives an extra £22m loss under the current rules anyway, and that hypothetical third season would also replace a £40m loss on the books from the promotion season, so -£52m, +£9m, £???. Yes, we have further amortisation/installments of players already bought, but theoretically could afford to take another big loss in 24/25 and still be in the clear. It probably depends on how much we cut the wage bill, if at all, I suppose.

I would still say the smart move at this stage might sadly be to sell Murillo for £50-60m if we can get it, and reinvest the profit sensibly in areas of need. But sensible isn't our modus operandi so who knows what will happen.

LB - I'd take a look at Harrison Burrows, of Peterborough United. 22 Years old, recently elevated to Captain of their team, has grown into that role very quickly - 11 goals & 14 assists from Left-Back - and he's only been playing that position full-time since the start of this season (he was splitting time between left-wing, number 10 and emergency left-back in prior seasons. He's also just won League 1 player of the season - an award that doesn't go to Full-backs very often. Could probably get him for £6-8 million with add-ons.

The difference in 24/25 is how much smaller our squad will look:

• 20-25 gone over 23-24 and 11 signed.
• 10 ideally offloaded (hopefully in 24/25)
• Existing Amortisation reduced to 40-45m.
• Wages reduced accordingly.

If we can reduce the squad size, it leaves a core group of 20, plus 5 signings in 24-25.

Personally, I think we’ll amortise 70-80m over 4-5 years if we can move players on.

I also think Niakhate (last year of his contract) will leave before Murillo. Unless someone offers 60m plus for him.

I don’t think we’ll get relegated either.

Very hopeful.

Can't see us being able to flog some of the deadwood like Dennis, so our amortisation will likely increase not reduce given we spent another wedge in summer and our only outgoings with existing amortisation were Scarpa, Mangala, Biancone and Freuler.

Even if we do manage to flog some of the deadwood, we might well end up doing so for a FFP loss as the transfer fee received is less than the outstanding amortisation.

The only deadwood left is Dennis imo. The upper end of amortisation (with him included) is 45m/year.

Hwang and Panzo will attract a fee fairly in line with what’s left.

O’Brien, Richards and Worrall should be easy enough to move, even if we just break even overall.

Vlach might be very difficult!

I don’t think anyone is left after that?

Was the 15m for Wood in 22/23 or 23/24? Either way it’s done.

I thought the outgoing recruitment was superb in 23/24. No reason (Dennis aside) that we can’t replicate it next season.

Our wages were 145m in 23/24 (if I remember that right). Even if player wages were 125m of that then we’d need to pay 25 players 100k a week to hit that next season.

Whilst MGW and Sangare likely earn that, I’d imagine that 5 or more current players (Aina, Murillo, Omobamidele, Toffolo and Yates) are on around 50k a week.

The average EPL salary is 70-80k a week.

5 @ 50k, 15 @ 80k and 5 @ 100k is 100m in player wages.

I definitely think we’ll be closer to the figure I mentioned than a 20m spend.

I'm not convinced we'll be able to move on O'Brien or Richards given their respective injuries. A minor miracle if we move on Vlach. Hwang and Panzo might go for a nominal fee but we'd probably have to realise an adjusted loss on Hwang which is bigger than the amortisation figure due next year. I suspect he'll go out on loan again. Worrall obviously has no amortisation against him. Chris Wood will likely get a contract extension which will split the remaining £7.5m amortisation across two years.

I just don't see our aggregated amortisation fee reducing.

O'Brien has started the last 13 thirteen matches in the centre of midfield for Middlesbrough, the last eight of which have been unbeaten. I suspect many clubs at that level will be interested. Whether they match our valuation so we make much profit is a different matter.

Moving O'Brien on won't be difficult, though I'd expect us to have shifted from our previous 10m valuation*. I think he'll be involved as a makeweight for another Boro player in Hackney...

* Id also hope that shift will have been made up with the two loan fees we have received.

I have a feeling that might happen too. We've been monitoring Hackney for a while and I wouldn't be surprised to see us in for him in the summer.

Since the club are obviously assuming we stay up, my (cut price) summer theories are Hackney (cheaper with Lewis as makeweight), Gil (cut price deal, though fear Morgan may also go the other way and he might end up being a makeweight too) and Nelson Abbey in an always signed for us anyway, if currently deemed ready to work with the senior squad.

Illing Junior at Juve and Borges/Forbes at Ajax are worth keeping an eye on too - both ones we've apparently tried for on more than one occasion. If Morgan leaves half expect us to go for Ndaiye again for the same reasons as before.

(We won't sign all of those wingers obviously, but I'd expect us to bring at least one in who can play either side, which is why I think Gil might be a goer, as well as being cheaper than the other two and actively being moved on.)

Cameron Archer is an interesting one with Sheff U going down - half expect Villa to activate their relegation clause deal and move him on again, though maybe it'll be a loan. If they dont I'd hope we might be interested... Brereton would also give us something, in a probably less unpopular opinion than when I said it last time given he's done something in the Prem now.

Ferguson at Bologna (?) who we wanted along with loads of others has seriously broke himself apparently. Don't think we'd have got him anyway, but definitely won't now.

Four players needed for me.

Another winger
A RB to challenge/take over from Neco
A CB who would wipe out his own gran to clear a ball.
A central midfielder who can command the middle a bit.

This is on the assumption that Murillo/MGW aren't sold and all the players out of contract are released.

Didn't realise.

Funny how little attention you can pay to the Championship when you're not in it.

I have been checking every so often whether he’s been in the team since he got back from injury, but admit I was surprised when I checked the stats properly.
