Current state of the squad

Louth Red

First Team Squad
On the basis that we stay up there is serious work to be done if we are to be competitive and avoid another relegation battle.

Better recruitment with a smaller but more balanced squad means smarter work. Several departures are clear, others will be likely for financial reasons. Our wage bill must be reduced if we are to meet financial rules next season, and the new rules in 25/26.

We also need to renegotiate contracts of better players we need to keep to avoid losing them for low or zero fees.

All of this requires clarity on the future of Nuno.

An interesting time ahead.

We continue to make good chances, so someone who can pop them in with some regularity would be nice.

We continue to let a few in because of defensive errors, so some big bastard at the back (who stays fit) would be nice, too.

In a back 3 is worral that bad?

A 10 to 15 goal a season striker such as Diaz, Adebayo and give wood a year extension and I reckon we have enough to start pushing on.

We need to strengthen in the head as much as the feet. No team loses this many points from winning positions, concedes this many from set pieces, is so much worse away than at home without being mentally fragile. We need leaders and some steel.

And yes, at least 1 striker.
This all the way for me. Our lack of genuine leadership has been so obvious this season. We saw the positive influence of Felipe and Aurier last season and in my opinion losing them through long injury to Felipe (and Boly) and with Aurier moving on has been a particularly difficult issue for us on too many occasions.

Yeah i remember reading Aurier’s goodbye post to the players and it was ‘my warriors’ this and that and it seemed to me we were losing an important voice. Joe would have been similar. But it might not need to be a big talker. Could just be a signing that makes the others players think we have a right to expect to win games. We have new entrants to the league trying to prove themselves, young players and down on their luck players. Bring some people in who are used to winning and demand standards. Expensive though…

I just want someone on the pitch who can drive us forward - we are one of the worst teams when it comes to closing down players, and for falling ever-deeper when we should be pushing harder.
Does anyone know where I could find the distance covered stats for each Prem team?
I have a feeling we wouldn't, as a team, be top of that league.

Well Remo Freuler would regularly top these stats for our team while he was here. So not sure how useful a yardstick it is for what you want.

I'm not talking about the stat for 1 player.
I am talking about an overall stat for the team.
Also, I don't think a single stat will give you a full picture.
Taking Freuler: he may have done a lot of running, but a lot of it was him chasing a player and failing to make a tackle.

Oh yeah I was just making the point that overall distance covered might not be the best measure for ‘driving the team forward’. Not sure if there is a stat for that, there may be.

Seem to remember a lot of talk about Sangare’s impressive heat map stats or something before he arrived.

Ndidi is out of contract at Leicester this summer. He might fancy a change. Also that Mady Kamara at Oly is out of contract. It wouldn’t be the first time that EM has given us an Oly player so as not to lose out on a transfer fee

I’d take either of those two and sell Danilo

We have more than solid players but an awful team. That's the frustrating part. We should also be more confident when hoping to keep players like Murillo etc. Striker is the key area of improvement next year. Wood is ok and wouldn't be near my choice of striker for a PL squad. Taiwo is very unreliable. I hate seeing Origi in our kit, much like Ayew last year. Pad out striker situation and we'll be good.

I really like Sels, Aina, Williams, Murilo, CHO, Danilo, MGW, Elanga. That's a real solid backbone to work with.

Is Nuno the medicine to the awful team scenario - I honestly don't know. But fully back him to. Coaching and management is really key to out potential success.

i think forest still need to sell one of danilo , mgw or murillo for us to buy any new players. In the summer, felipe, arter, kouyate, hennessey, mckenna , soh to be released, aina one more year to be triggered on his contract , boly and wood get one more year but wood might interest promoted clubs coming up from the championship , hopefully shelvey and worrall turkey stay will be made permanent and we can sell turner and vlach.

He's moved to Rizespor on a permanent. Although, initially a loan, FIFA rules and the international registration system prevented the loan being registered because we already had 7 players out on loan. The club then quickly resolved the error and made the move permanent.

Someone needs to tell their president: he was in the news the other day hoping to get a deal done with us for Shelvey.

Who knows what's going on there?

I do wonder about whether some of the buy options will be exercised. Specifically Ribeiro and Tavares.
Not sure Tavares has been available enough to be considered buy worthy at the price agreed, though seemed like Nuno liked him. Perhaps they'll do a deal at a lower price - depends how much Marseille want him and how much cash they want to spend.

I haven't seen anything in the loans to make me want to keep any of them.

Ribeiro is probably the most likely to stay really, he's 19 and the plan can't have been for him to get many minutes this season, but for us to have a look in training etc and the odd cameo and decide what we think, he'll also be quite low risk in terms of fee and similar type to what Syrianos would probably look at anyway, though I think he's a Mendes kid. We can loan him to the CH or he can play in the age group sides as well as he's still young enough.

Montiel is only getting in because Neco is there and we also have Aina who can play both full back options and Toff at LB.

The only buy option which should be exercised on Origi is the Just Eat subscription.

As for Tavares, one would have to be barking... aside from the odd match where he's chased the ball down the left flank like he's rabid, most of the end product and his defending has been dog rough.

The stories in January were very specific about the error and fix.

If it turns out to have been lies, I would not be at all shocked. Disappointed, massively so.

I suspect it's all some dodgy gentlemen's agreement type thing to avoid either the loan being cancelled or us getting charged.

Hey, perhaps Nuno fancies a go with him? (Eek!)

Squad needs…

Back up keeper. Probably two.
Back up fullback, ideally able to cover both sides
Right sided CB
Winger
Starting striker
I'd prioritise the winger/forward, CB, backup goalie, and add a central midfielder.

I think you want to improve CM and CB every summer if you can, even if you have settled partnerships there. It's the core of the team and the most influential players at pretty much every level. You always have to look to improve there. Wood/Awoniyi are quality, and I get that having a striker who starts and stays fit is this big fantasy signing we all want....question is will we ever find that player? Doubt it personally. I think it's more likely we sign a winger/inside forward type who can give us something we don't already have, ideally who can play up top if we need them to. I don't think we can afford all the players we all want! But I guess we got CHO and Aina for peanuts so it's possible.

A lot of criticism of Montiel recently. I think he's a decent player and we'll find another one like him on loan next year. Would love to find a new first choice full back but unless it's another one of those peanuts signings I don't think we can afford it. I also think Sangare will come good. He was decent earlier in the season when we played him, Nico and Mangala as a 3. Not sure what happened after that tbh, I guess Mangala was probably carrying the other two to an extent. Maybe Mangala comes back?
