I never thought I’d see such interest on the forum in a planning committee (having sat in a few myself).

For the doubters this is another big statement of intent from the owners.

Its a big and important step but only the first.

We supporters need to show patience - this is a big project and not just replacement of a football stand. Securing suitable contractors with skilled workers, and a robust supply chain for all supplies will present big challenges, and impact on timelines. Agreements have to be reached with other parties.

The construction period will also impact on match day experience in many ways - lower capacity, displaced season card holders, match day parking etc. Supporters will be impacted - remember the construction of the Trent End and Bridgford stands.

Once again we will have the largest capacity in the East Midlands and its only the start.

No pain No gain

Patience please

Leicester are expanding theirs to 40k

After the initial relief it’s finally sorted, my overriding feeling is this is about 25 years overdue. How many times have we been told over the years to forget it you can’t build the main stand up any higher cos of the daylight issues or the roof will have to slope down at one end. Bollox! It was possible all along with a bit of willpower and determination. We should be talking about raising the capacity to 40-45k by now not 35k.

I have mixed feelings about this. Obviously, any expansion is good. But my hunch is that in the premier League we would be able to sell out a 35k people stadium. If I'm right on this, then it should be bigger, perhaps 40k. But perhaps that's difficult to achieve on the current site.

Not even about the capacity, the PT stand in its current state is just embarassing - let's be honest.

As has been mentioned the next phase is to level up the bridgeford end although I’m not sure how that adds another 3k.

Now we have permission granted. Work starts at the earliest next summer and the completed PT stand will take the best part of 2 years.
Any further developments will be dependent on if we’re still Premier League and if we’re selling out I presume
Thought they claimed fully open by start of 24/25 season - with part of lower tier open before end of 23/24 season?
Must admit I thought that to be highly optimistic.

The current stand is older than me, and I am pretty old. It is a frankly shambolic embarrassment, whose facilities would shame a gulag jailer, and offers precisely nothing for the club in attracting additional commercial revenue.

For a now top-flight club, it’s well past its best, and should have been demolished years ago. The club need, and deserve, a modern stand, with decent facilities for the matchday fan and other activities. Let us hope a sustained stay in the top flight proves to be the catalyst in getting not only the existing PT stand sorted, but also the badly-needed redevelopment of the Brian Clough stand, and then the Bridgford Stand. The Trent End could do with a touch of paint too, and the club needs to decide what they are doing with The Pitch, a criminally underused facility.

Someone told me it was built as a 'temporary' stand following the fire damage........not sure if this is true?

Long long overdue a replacement either way.

Looking forward to getting back to my seat and to my mates in the Trent End, curious whether its (as Strummer said) had a lick of paint.

I went on holiday to Malta a few years ago. Great apartment. Right in the heart of everything, amazing views from the roof of the place... well...three quarters of it. The other was of a dilapidated factory that looked like it should've been demolished decades ago.

The City Ground is a bit like that.

Agree with everyone here. It's about scale. It's wise to move on the priority which is the corporate front of the club with facilities inclusive for all, modern and fit for the prem league. The investment of 100mil is to kickstart a well overdue revenue builder for the long term. Tbh the next phase would surley be the low hanging fruit of the BC stand, it's desperate for modernisation and could add another 5k without all the issues about levelling the bridgford end. Massive opportunity to build restaurants and fan zones there

If anyone thinks they wouldn't have weighed up all the various options, taking into account capacity increase, construction period, cost, impact on matchday, environmental issues, constructability, health and safety, expected gate increase, commercial opportunities, adjacent landowners, transportation, etc. for each, then you're miles off the mark. If it was easier/made more sense to do it another way then that would've been selected instead. It's never as easy as people think.

Nor will it be easy to get things done (as mentioned above). Supply chain issues mean that construction rates are extremely volatile at the moment, in a business where cost certainty is always important.

Saying that, even getting to this stage is a phenomenal achievement, given the obstacles faced, so well done to all involved. In excited for things to get cracking and to see the final updates.

Just reread the proposals and the NP now saying work to be completed by the end of 23/24

Good news although it's only a step (albeit an important one) on the journey.

The hard work starts now....

It's a British construction project.

And if you look that term up in any reputable thesaurus you'll see it listed as a synonym for "delay"

No chance whatsoever it'll be completed by 2024. It'll be 2025 at the absolute earliest, probably more like 26 or 27 if we're being honest.
