Just been reading this article on BBC sports. It makes an interesting read of how football used to be, back-to-back games and no available kit for the 2nd game so having to play in the everyday clothes.

How FA Cup final hat-trick hero finally got a headstone

Oh, and it shows how irrelevant Notts are considered that I had to find this thread on the second page :ROFLMAO:
In fairness, it was one of the handful of Nottingham stories on (my configuration of) the My News tab on the BBC News site this morning, so I came across it without trying. I wouldn’t expect it to be very prominent on the (national, but inevitably geared towards the big-city teams) BBC Sport site.

And fair play to the chaps who went to the trouble of marking his grave properly. It reminds me of the efforts to give Tinsley Lindley a decent memorial a few years back. (Apropos which, if anyone can tell me the whereabouts TL’s grave at Wilford Hill I’ll try to take a look next time I’m there to visit my parents’ grave. I looked for it once without success a few years ago.)

I have just looked up pictures of Tinsley's grave and have pinpointed the position, but whether I could guide you there is another matter!

It's right by the main building in the middle of the cemetery. As you stand looking at the main portico at the front of the building go left around on the road. Just around the corner is a large tomb with a roof, TL's grave is in front of that tomb. It is all in black and the give-away is right in the middle of it is a football boot with a ball balanced on it.

Thank you so much for taking the trouble! Not sure when I’ll next be there, but when I go I’ll see if I can find it.

Not a direct link to either us or the Sadpies Richard, but on a similar theme it's interesting that AC Milan, or one of its supporters groups, maintains a shrine to him at his place of birth, 191 Mansfield Road, close to Nottingham city centre. I don't know what's behind its doors, but a large AC emblem adorns the darkened shop window.

If we’re talking Milan this is presumably Herbert Kilpin, not Tinsley Lindsey? As I recall, he was born or brought up on Mansfield Road and worked in the lace trade before moving to Italy where he was instrumental in founding a football (and cricket) club in Milan. There’s a good book called The Lord of Milan telling his story (fact-based fiction, if you like) and a DVD too (which I haven’t seen but am tempted to get).

Yes Ian, it is Herbert Kilpin I was referring to. A daft omission on my part.

I've been told that Milan fans are frequently seen making a pilgrimage to the shop.

I know we haven't played them for about 15 years (possibly more), but I seem to remember Forest constantly struggling against Walsall. Just mentioning them makes me despondent. Grim days!
Just to cheer you up-I remember a particularly grim 4-1 defeat at the Bescot Stadium one evening in 2003
as the Paul Hart managerial reign was starting to fall apart.

I went to that game too. Drove up from Gloucestershire in plenty of time so was able to park almost right outside the ground, but that was as good as it got. The turnstiles weren’t open so an increasing number of Reds could only stand around outside until they eventually opened them much nearer kick-off than we’re used to at the WFCG. Then IIRC there was no food being served in the away end (didn’t bother me as I’d eaten already but the Celtic-supporting friend I’d dragged along wasn’t impressed). Things didn’t get better once the match started either - we usually lost to Walsall in those days even when we were ostensibly better than them. On this occasion we lost by more than usual and the game was proof if proof were ever needed that playing a young Wes Morgan at left back wasn’t a good idea.

My memory for game details doesn't hold a candle to yours Norman, particularly those during the grimmer periods of the last 67-years, but am I right in thinking that Kinnear's first game when he replaced Hart was against Walsall, when we scored a late equaliser to draw 3-3?

Indeed,Otis-I couldn’t believe it when we scored in the first few minutes as well after a goal drought under Hart.

I think you're spot on. Andy Impey scored on his debut with his first touch in the 2nd minute (don't think we'd scored a goal for about 8 games). Then I think we capitulated, ended up 3-1 down. Forgot who scored our second but think Gareth Taylor scored a last minute equaliser.

EDIT: It was that prick Marlon King that scored the 2nd. Also just seen @Ian Moore Gone Little beat me to my Andy Impey trivia 😂

Sorry.. 😉 I got in first but you remembered more - I could only recall the Impey goal and none of the rest. My memory is patchy at the best of times, certainly not as impressive as Cloughie’s, so as a rule of thumb the earlier my replies the less definite info there’ll be. If I get a lot right it will mean I’ve been off to check the facts online or in my extensive Forest library….

To be fair-I’d forgotten that King had scored but I well remember Impey scoring and the late Taylor equaliser.
I still came away from the game disappointed as we really needed a win after a poor run.

As a Notts fan I find less and less of our are upset at your success.

Maybe it's my age, I think it's cause you had some time in the doldrums (for your level of club) and I like anything that is sticking it to the top 6.

I was worried how it would effect Notts but it has had no negative impact, our crowds are up and our fanzone is packed with away fans when you are at home

Sure there will always be some fans who don't like you lot (hey you call us the sadpies) but mostly we are busy on our journey and although this season is up and down we finally have owners who are stable, not crazy and are putting money into the club in areas where it needed it.

Now please qualify for Europe so we can European away fans in the nest. Ta

When I was doing my tour of the grounds I had a good time across the river. Could not have been nicer to me, allowing me a free run around. So I'm in the 'like' camp.

Plus, of course, when I discovered the Forest ground, I already knew about Notts because of the Tommy Lawton connection. So I actually chose the junior club at the time, I think you could say; Notts getting promotion before us.

You’re away zone I hate to say it is qualiteh for away fans. I watched a Villa fans vlog when he went there. It’s such a good idea by you boys as well to get some extra pennies in.

I’ve always said if Forest didn’t exist I’d support county. I just can’t hate you even if you were better than us. I love Nottingham I can’t be angry at anything Nottingham. It also fills me with pride that we had the first professional football club. Our city was there at the forefront of footy.

Plus my grandad who was born in 1932 said to me that everyone used to watch both teams. He was a Forest fan from the meadows but he liked county. So I can’t have any bad feelings. Although when we play I do really want to beat you 🤣🤣. I remember celebrating that Wes Morgan goal in the cup like a champions league final winner.
