The Relegation Dogfight 23/24

Sheff Utd and Burnley are almost certainly gone so we just have to outperform Luton for 8 games. I think that's definitely doable despite our obvious deficiencies. It's an added bonus if Everton are sanctioned again and thrown back into the mix.
Surely Burnley are only 4 points behind us? It's not inconceivable that they could be within 2 points going down to the final day at Turf Mor, when I shall be sat on an a Trans Atlantic flight for the entire day.

Burnley would need 13 points from 7 games to have a chance of staying up I reckon as Forest will get a couple more wins to take us to 31 minimum.

Them and Sheffield United are done.

Between Forest, Everton and Luton for final slot.

Where does this leave us? In a much better position,

Burnley are effective 7 points adrift of us with GD factored in. Let's say Everton get a 4 point deduction, that leaves them on 22 with a better GD (maybe), hopefully Arsenal can hammer Luton's GD tommorow,

Ok so that leaves us with a slight advantage, Everton - Burnley, Luton - Bournemouth at the weekend, 2 massive games for all involved,

Forest:
Spurs (A)
Wolves (H) - This is the key one for me, we really need to try and get 3 points here and pick up points elsewhere too obviously
Everton (A)
City (H)
Sheff Utd (A)
Chelsea (H)
Burnley (A)

IF ONLY... we hadn't conceded at Luton.

If we'd beaten Luton in both games we'd be 9 points clear of relegation (effectively 10) due to an even better goal difference.

As we are, a couple more wins might even do it, 3 probably will.

For me, it's still a mini-league of seven teams.
Sheffield United, Burnley, Luton, us, Everton, Brentford and Palace.

Feels like two spots are still up for grabs.

Sheffield United
- The most games to play but also, the least amount of points and away and clear the worst goal difference. Ten, effectively 11 points off safety, 9 to play.

I can't see them escaping, at all. They don't score that many and they leak goals like it's in fashion.

Burnley
Six points off of us (effectively 7) but they've got 6 points from 12 past and are unbeaten in the last 4. Goal difference is not as bad as Sheffield United's but also still shit.

That said, if they could maintain their current form, possibly they could get out of it. In some respects, I feel like they can overtake Luton but I'm not sure they can get clear. Really hope that last game of the season is a formality for us.

Luton
They're plucky little f***ers, I will give them that. Going forward, they are a team capable of surviving but defensively, they're a relegation fodder. They have a big injury list as well. They've got a game in hand on us but can they get the wins needed? I can't tell if them or Burnley are more likely to survive.

Forest
We've got to be the most bi-polar team in the fight. Going forward, we can score against anyone but defensively, I feel like we're always going to concede, especially from a set piece.

It'd take 3 or 4 wins from Spurs, Everton, Wolves, Sheffield United, City, Chelsea and Burnley. I think that's doable. Like Burnley, we've hit a bit of form at the moment while all the other teams are stuttering.

If we can put out the team we put out against Fulham for the remaining games, give or take the odd switch, we'll stay up I think.

Everton
They are the wildcard in this because they are playing every single team in this last apart from Palace and also, they are due another deduction. Don't score much but don't concede much either.

I don't think another deduction necessarily sinks them but they are very much masters of their own fates, given their fixtures. A lot of six pointers plus a local derby still to play.

Brentford
Listen, if Everton and Forest are in it, Brentford are in it as well. No win in 7 either. They absolutely could be pulled into it and not even secretly, I'd love it if they went down. Horrible football club.

Palace
They have the most points but they have two wins in 2024, against Sheffield United and against Burnley. They have City, Liverpool, West Ham, Newcastle, Fulham, Man U, Wolves and Villa. All teams fighting for European places. They have the least work to do as a couple wins will see them safe, but in my view, I don't see actually where they get those from.

Just do better than Luton each week. Praying they get a spanking tonight but can see them getting another early lead and scaring us all.

Agree with the Nuno past teams and wanting to prove a point. If it was an old manager returning to play us, we’d be certain they’d get points against us wouldn’t we? Hoping for (realistically):

1 vs Spurs
3 vs Wolves
3 vs Everton (would be amazing)
0 vs Man City
3 vs Sheffield Utd
1 vs Chelsea
1 vs Burnley

Easy (!)

If we beat Wolves we'll stay up. It'll give us four remaining winnable games to get a win and maybe one more draw.

That’s certainly a best case scenario, 12 points would certainly see us safe. The 3 wins turning to draws would probably see us needing a result on the last day. Just hope we’re safe by then. 🤞

I really hope you are right but I feel we need to get 9 points to feel comfortable - but a lot depends on Everton and how many points they get deducted.

Spurs - 0
Wolves - 3
Everton - 1
Man City - 0
Sheff Utd 3
Chelsea - 1
Burnley - 1

I think the above is very much a realistic aim from the games we have, I just hope we can get a surprise win from somewhere.

Hopefully by the time we reach Sheff Utd and Burnley they are both already relegated.

To be honest if we go down then we can have zero complaints. We play the bottom 2 and a team just 1 point ahead of us - we should be able to
get the points needed to stay up.

Just play the team that started last night every game now, and be prepared to change Danilo out for Dom mid-game if he's not firing.

Obviously fitness may demand tweaks, but last night showed the template we need.

Chances are we'll get spanked a bit away from home too, but I think it'd more important that we endure that and get a settled side rolling than dick about with it too much.

For me it's all about settled partnerships, confidence and focus for the home game against Wolves and the away games against Everton, Burnley and Sheff U.

Maybe rest some legs against City as an exception.

We'll be safe by the time we play Burnley on those points. We'd be safe after the Sheff Utd game as it'd put us on 32 points - would mean Luton would need 11 points from where they currently are to overhaul us, from 8 games. Unlikely. And that assumes Everton have no further points deduction.

Luton aren't getting many more points on the road with trips to Arse, City, Wolves and West Ham. Their home games v Bournemouth, Brentford, Everton & Fulham all look winnable though.

Everton v Burnley will be interesting on Sat.
