Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure that some years ago when Burton Albion drew an F.A Cup game at Old Trafford it gave them the money to build their new stadium.
I don't know whether that's true or not, but it must have been very lucrative for them however they spent those additional funds. That was one of the first examples I gave last night whilst discussing this issue with a mate because it was brilliant wasn't it; I remember watching the first game at Burton and then finding myself getting a bit excited for them that they were getting a replay at Old Trafford. I watched the replay keenly with the elders in one of the hotel bars at East Midlands airport and it was full of people watching it (and most didn't seem to support either team like us).

The Lincoln City CEO was on this morning and he said they built and paid for a new training ground after their FA Cup exploits of a few years back.

It doesn't happen every year, but the possiblility is always there for lower league clubs. The thought that the tournament is being downgraded for the benefit of a handful of clubs is the bitter pill. A few lumps of sugar are being offered in the new deal to help swallow that bitter pill.

Always bothered me that the tie itself takes precedence over the sport so that a draw at home v man united is favoured over a win against them and drawing chesterfield in the next game. Currently that puts money in front of sporting merit in my mind.

Giant killers tend to kill the giant first time around when the giant may not be fully aware of what’s going to hit them, and/or may underestimate the opponent.
The minnows are able to request “home ties” be moved to the giant’s ground if the giant’s ground is bigger and would result in a bigger gate-money/tv money share.
As for games between giants, then attendees would probably prefer to see a decisive result in one game and not have to fork out a second ticket cost.

I'm all for a boycott of this competition next year.

I watched the Oxford-Stevenage game tonight, and during the first half the Oxford fans whipped up a round of ‘stand up for the FA Cup’ which I liked. As fans of a Premier League club playing a ‘big 6’ club next Sunday I wouldn’t be averse to a round of that for the cameras at some point - it would show that we don’t want to associate with all this nonsense.

It would beat ‘stand up if you hate D*rby’ anyway; I enjoy our rivalry with our mutton molesting friends down the road but I refuse to waste breath singing about some League One no-marks whilst we’re in the so-called ‘big-time’ - we’ve got bigger fish to fry just now.

Edit: maybe we sing that instead whilst we’re supposed to be singing MoK; everybody still gets to make a racket just prior to kick-off but we replace our own anthem with something more supportive of the game in general - that could make a strong point to both our own powers that be about the season ticket situation and the greater forces like the PL and FA.

Yeah that's a pretty good idea!

Over here in the low rent side of the Midlands, Midlands Today have been going full pelt on pushing the Coventry's 1987 FA Cup win nostalgia.

To be honest it was a better age. Hope they stuff Manure
Probably my favourite cup final I can remember to be fair, in terms of the ultimate winner.

Wigan beating Man City is the only other example I can think of in recent years.

I'm sure fans who support lower league clubs, either as their primary love or as a second club, will agree with Lily.

I admit I do not go to their games these days, but seeing the hand to mouth existence of King's Lynn and their fans still showing passion and loyalty when expecting nothing in return (and often providing free labour into the bargain) gives me hope that some of that feeling might seep upwards in return for some support filtering down.

But expecting the top clubs to think of their lower brethren is just idle speculation. You know they couldn't give a toss.

You know things are bad when you find yourself agreeing with Neil Warnock

Ironic and inevitable of course the very first FA cup tie after these announcements is Chelsea vs Man City.

When in all likelihood Coventry get knocked out tomorrow my interest in this year’s competition will drop to near-zero.

Stokoe's Sunderland beating Revie's Dirty Leeds was pretty special. A good day out for the Mackems and people that don't like cheats.
