The English league is still the best league. I have long stated that reaching the final eight of the CL is a big accomplishment in itself any season. The fact that no English team made the final four this season is in sharp contrast to previous years. One year doesn't suddenly tilt the landscape. Porto weren't really the best team in Europe the year they won the CL, right? I mean, they beat f***ing Monaco in the final. Enigmas don't redefine a swath of time.

It also doesn't give anyone the right to be arrogant about the English league by labelling it better than any of the other European leagues, in blind ignorance.

No, but in terms of regular tendencies it is the strongest league, for certain.

Btw, the rule about cautions rescinded during PKs makes perfect sense for precisely the reason that happened today.

Bayer Leverkusen‘s draw against Wet Sham is their 44th match unbeaten in all competitions this season, and that is a new European record.

I’ve run out of superlatives for what Xabi Alonso is doing there, it’s a brilliant job.

Thinking about it, there is also maybe a scenario where the Bundesliga sends six teams to next-season‘s „Champions“ League; if German teams secure the remaining three points to take the coefficient to a level unreachable by virtue of England‘s only remaining representative (Aston Villa), which - given Dortmund, Bayern and Leverkusen are still there in the major European competitions, is not unreasonable - if Dortmund were to actually win the European Cup for a second time, they would qualify for next seasons‘ competition as the holders outright.

Then, if Dortmund - who are currently fifth in the Bundesliga - actually finished in fifth-place, again, not an unreasonable assumption, then the team in sixth (currently Eintracht Frankfurt, fourteen points behind Die Schwarzgelb, and highly unlikely to catch them) would get the „fifth“ place for a German side, based on the UEFA coefficient.

I think I have that right…

Things you love to see:

Eintracht 2, Augsburg 1, 94th minute of 96; Augsburg get a corner, so - of course - send up the keeper.

They fail to beat the first man, Eintracht win the ball, which ends up with Omar Marmousch, who carries it forward sixty meters and wallops it into the empty net!

3-1, full time!

Football, eh? Bloody hell!

Today in Europe‘s most exciting league, SV Darmstadt could be relegated back to the 2.Bundesliga, if they lose the relegation six-pointer against 1.FC Köln.

Köln, in 17th, play Mainz 05, in 16th next week, so one of them or both will get at least one point, so a defeat today will condemn Darmstadt back to the second tier. Darmstadt have amassed only 14 points, Köln 22 and Mainz 26.

But its so tight down there, even Bochum (15th, 27 points), Wolfsburg (14th, 28 points), and 1.FC Union Berlin (13th, 29 points) are not out of it yet, and Union face Bayern in the late game tonight.

Bremen, in 12th on 31 points, ought to be just about safe, but another win should make that certain.

So it has finished Köln 0, Darmstadt 2, and a result that does neither team any favours - Darmstadt survive for another week, but Die Geißböcke are now properly in the shit, four points behind Mainz who are in the playoff spot in 16th, but having played a game more.

Next week, when Effzeh face Die Nullfünfers, is going to be massive.

Harry Kane scores an absolute banger of a free kick from about 28m out, to make it Union 0, Bayern 2 at half time.

Kane‘s 33rd goal of the Bundesliga season, and he is bang in form, which can only be a massive bonus for England, with Euro2024 coming up.

Bayer Leverkusen have equalised yet again in stoppage time to keep their unbeaten run going.

It's just getting ridiculous now. What team spirit they have. 4 more league games to go and if they don't lose those what do we call them; the invincibles of Germany?

It was a cracking match, they scored from a corner in the seventh minute of eight added on for a mass-brawl on 84 minutes, which included eight or nine players, after a Nico Schlotterbeck foul on Jeromie Frimpong started a melee which initially saw Victor Boniface shown a straight red card for throwing a punch, VAR intervened, and - correctly - after a review, Boniface‘s card was rescinded by the Referee, although he did book Granit Xhaka for swinging an elbow.

It is an astonishing record for Die Werkself, although they’ve another tough game next weekend, when VfB Stuttgart visit!

The charitable foundation that built a bronze statue of the late Gerd Müller outside the Allianz Arena, have announced that they will also fund a statue of Franz Beckenbauer.

„Der Kaiser“ will stand alongside his former Bayern and Germany team-mate, „Der Bomber“:

Derby Della Madonnina tonight but with a bit of an extra twang to it. If the Merda win, they win the Scudetto. This turn of events has made even God cry as it's been raining all day.

In other news Pioli has decided not to play a striker tonight. Genius if it works....P45 if it doesn't

Incoming?
Definitely. But in the summer. It's been on the cards for a while now but he keeps getting a result at a crucial time.

Milan want Thiago Motta but rumours are he's already agreed with Juve. Current favourites are Loptegui and Conte. Can't say I'm overly enamoured by either. I'd take Sarri because I loved the way his Napoli team played and the chaos he causes everywhere he goes.

So it’s the Topspiel der Woche, Bayer 04 Leverkusen against VfB Stuttgart, should be an absolute banger, VfB Trainer Sebastian Höneß springs a surprise and will send his men out in an unfamiliar 3-4-2-1 formation to try and match Xavi Alonso‘s side.

Leverkusen are celebrating their Bundesliga title and have a number of former stalwarts present, including legendary coach, Christoph Daum!
