I don't share the general enthusiasm, I think 17 million is too much for him. I understand that good strikers are expensive commodities, but this is just an inflated number.
Only time will tell-I’ll give my opinion before dozing off during the World Cup in November.

17m for a bloke who hit 20 goals in the German top division?

We paid 6m for a 30 year old who hit 20 in the championship. I'd say 11m more for the same volume of goals, 6 years younger and in a far tougher league is worth it.

Grabban wasn't over priced at the time (still isn't now) and unless this guy doesn't score for us I can't see him not being worth it.

I don't think it's an unusual concern at all; I for one hadn't heard of him until a week ago. But there's a reason he was on Liverpool's books and better German teams wanted him. So far Dane and co's process hasn't put a foot wrong really, so I think a lot of us have faith in that system, after going so long without a direction when it comes to transfers.

We all hope you're wrong!

It's chrome mobile that's at fault for my lack of widgets, Firefox has everything available. It was the brackets in the little dots dropdown that needed clicking, as mister suggested, in case anyone has the same issue in the future.

I think some people have a negative view on signings from the Bundesliga because of the notorious '38% tax' gimmick which is based on players dropping 38% in value after moving to England

The thing about Awoniyi is that his data shows strengths in all the right places. Taking his data from last season and comparing it with the premier league average paints a promising picture

Of course this doesn't mean he will 100% come good but at £17m it's an absolute steal based on potential alone. He's big, strong, direct with pace and knows his way around the oppositions area. Comes with a reputation as his name is known amongst respected coaches and is tried and tested in a top european division

His stats last season are practically identical to Tammy Abraham, to put it into context Abraham is valued at around £40m

Nothing is guaranteed in football and many factors can play their part, but this is an excellent signing (even more so at the price) and I certainly wouldn't bet against him being a success. Great business from us

Good read.

in summary,

puts more tackles in than most strikers
doesn't like to pass when he should
a bit greedy around the box but gets a good return of goals

For those concerned about the fee, I would like to see alternatives put forward that offer better value.

The average player we are gonna buy is probably gonna be between £10-20m.
I suppose the obvious one is Davis, who has injury concerns and scored significantly less at a lower level, albeit over half a season.

Let's hope this lad is as good as I'm told he is - great start to the window!

We were gonna need another striker whether we got Davis or not.

I still think we will get him anyway though.

And he doesn't have the goalscoring pedigree this guy has got. He may turn out to be a flop, but at the end of the day we are getting good value on paper.

Yeah if you can’t take risks on someone like Awoniyi, you’re going to have a tough time.

17mil doesn’t get you much these days (certainly at striker), and without his buyout it would have gotten us someone with significantly worse stats and upside.

And agree I’m sure we will see another striker through the doors, but nice to have one in advance on pre-season who we can be excited about no matter who follows at the position.

The way the club will look at it is that even if he scores a handful of goals he'll retain value at least. If he does better than that he could be worth £50m

Harsh truth is that we are not really going to know whether it's value for money for several months - Maybe not until April next year.

All we can do is trust the recruitment team at Forest that it is value for money and that they've unearthed another gem and give him as much support as we can, which means support and not getting on his back at any point.

Based on the last 12 months I am happy to do that.

If the last nine months are anything to go by we'll have a pretty good idea in the next year. I doubt we'll die wondering next season.

Only a couple of months back we were laughing at Brentford for only offering 15 million for a player who’d barely completed half a season in the championship. 17 million for a player who scored 15 goals in the German top flight isn’t a wild stretch.

This is the level we are at now.

I get that people are understandably nervous but £17m for Awoniyi seems like decent business at the moment. The history of Premiership is littered with players who have cost more and delivered little so £17m while a club record for us is not that much by PL standards. Even looking at recent signings of strikers or wingers:
Everton's Alex Iwobi cost £27m
Spur's Steven Bergwijn cost £27m
West Ham United paid Eintracht Frankfurt £45million for Sebastian Haller
Newcastle paid Hoffenheim £39.6million for Joelinton
Alvaro Morata cost Chelsea £72 million
Alexei Sanchez cost Man Utd £30m
Leeds paid £27 for Rodrigo
Sofiane Boufal cost Southampton £17 million and scored just 7 goals.

Lets not forget as well that while we paid 13m for Carvalho we didn't shell out much anywhere else and even in the Championship there have been some very hefty fees for players ... of these only Neves would be approaching PL standard:
Matt Ritch £11m for Newcastle
Jordon Rhodes £10m for Boro
Scott Hogan £12m for Villa
Helder Costa £15m for Leeds
Boro paid £15m for Britt
Rueben Neves cost Wolves £15m

Yes only time will tell but we're going to have to pay these sorts of fees and we're gonna have failures.... just hopefully not for a long time..
