Summer 2023 Transfer Window

It’s going to be another busy one whatever happens. There will be incomings, new contracts, outgoings and maybe, just maybe we’ll have a relatively injury free squad!

Here’s a little graphic of the current squad (not including every youngster) with each player ranked by their age as at 1st July 2023 in their respective positions. You’ll also see how many years left they have on their contacts (where known).

Colour code:
  • Dark red mean the player will leave automatically unless Forest do something
  • Light red will enter their final year
  • Light green two years left;
  • Dark green is 3+ years left.
  • Ages in yellow are U21 for the season and exempt from the 25 man squad limit.
Priorities for me are:
  1. Sign a number one and number two keeper and get rid of Hennesey or Horvath.
  2. Sign up both Lodi and Aurier and move on Toffolo is Richards can get back to who we thought he would be.
  3. Extend Yates’ contract.
  4. Need a left sided forward and a centre forward.

If we stay up, there should be a lot of focus on getting rid of players.

Other than Aurier, I wouldn't bother keeping any of the out of contract players.

Of the loanees, I'd try and sign Lodi and Henderson permanently if we can.

I'd be looking to move on Horvath, Hennessey, Cook, Drager, Hwang, Dennis and one of either Toffolo or Richards. Maybe listen to offers for McKenna, Surridge and O'Brien if they are no longer in our plans or decent offers come in.

As for incomings, if we can't keep Aurier, Lodi and Henderson they will need replacing. Another centre back with pace, a new second choice keeper, left sided wide player and striker and I think we'd be done.

I think we can draw a couple of conclusions already:

1) Hennessey is going to be third choice, so we're going to need to sign two new keepers.
2) The likes of Ojeda, Mighten, Taylor, Swan, Aguilera etc aren't going to be near the first team squad.
3) Aurier will get offered a new contract, not sure any of the other permanent (ie, not loan players) who's deal runs out will.

That leaves you with:

GK: NEW, NEW, Hennessey
RB: Aurier, Williams
RCB: Boly, Worrall
LCB: Felipe, Niakhate, McKenna
LB: Richards*, Toffolo
CMD: Danilo, Shelvey, Freuler
CMB2B: Yates, Kouyate, Mangala
CMA: Scarpa, MGW
RF: Johnson, NEW
LW: NEW, Dennis
ST: Awoniyi, Wood, Surridge

That's 27 players there so 2 of them would need to be U21s so as to not count towards the registration limit.

Leaves quite a few senior players adrift: LOB, Biancone, Mbe Soh, Fornah, Bowler...

CMD=Central Midfield Defensive
CMB2B = Central Midfield Box to Box
CMA = Central Midfield Attack
* = Assumes Richards will play for us next year.

I think the emphasis has to be on first of all clearing out deadwood and secondly bringing in quality.

All this is division dependent obviously...

Henderson and Lodi can hopefully be signed up. Unfortunately though that means a large chunk of our budget would be taken up without us improving the team but there you go. I'm guessing Wood would get signed too...Maybe we could pick up some more top quality loans...

Don't see anyone other than Aurier getting a new deal. It would take something special from Ayew surely and I just don't see it. Everyone else released.

Hopefully with just a year left we can come to an agreement with Arter and bin the parasite off although why would he...

I'd be looking to move on players firstly, Mckenna, Cook, Hennessey, Toffolo (if Richards ever returns), O'Brien if Cooper doesnt fancy him, Surridge and Dennis. That frees up a lot more leeway with wages.

Then I'd want us to focus on bringing 3/4 players but proper quality. £10/12m a player had to be done last year through sheer numbers needed but at this level it's only getting you a certain level of player unless you're Brighton and have unreal scouting. So we're going to need a few more brought in for Gibbs-White kind of money and in key positions, at least one forward (either wide or central, preferably both), a midfielder and a centre half so sorting the spine out. It's the only way we'll progress. Unfortunately I just think the Greeks are addicted to the excitement of signing players so we'll see loads again.

Would like us to go back in for Tah from Bayer Leverkusen, even if it involves selling McKenna.

poor ojeda and Aguilera , signed at a young age , leave for a foreign country and then deemed as disposable goods 1 year later
I feel for them in a way but you don't get even as far as they have without knowing the nature of modern, global football. No player comes through without seeing the decent players they are or were surrounded by fall away as the standards get higher and higher. Neither will it be a surprise to see the nature of their relationship with Forest change as they've seen (however remotely) the club go from the championship (where you could argue they would have had a more reasonable chance of breaking through) to one that is now competing against teams stocked with some of the world's elite. We all bang on about agents but ultimately that is their role in the footballing eco-sphere (as well as gorging themselves on the possible riches available) to help navigate the best route possible through the game for their charges even if that does mean going from Forest to Korea, the Middle East or Australia.

I feel more for alot of the African kids in particular who come in to academies in European clubs at very young ages and don't make it at all.

I'm hopeful Aguilara has a future with us - didn't look out of place at world cup, Navas link, very good age, off to Europe for experience... while I doubt he's first team ready I'd hope he can have a squad role next year or the one after. Ojeda didn't look up to the level below however.

Transfer wise if we stay up I'd be looking at who we can do better than... I could probably make a case against losing all of these, but aside from the obvious (Cafu, Taylor) at this point I'd be looking at Toffolo, LO'B, McKenna, Surridge, Dennis and Colback. We'll certainly need a couple of forwards coming in...

I thought that Arter had a automatic two year contract extension last summer when we got promoted, which means we are stuck with him until 2024.

Yeah you might be right but I don’t suppose it matters in terms of the transfer window in the summer. He’s not in the plans full stop.

Didn’t want to tread on the toes of the contract thread which is really handy so some of my stuff might not be completely accurate.

If we stay up, next year will in many ways be tougher than this one as we essentially have to forget everything from this year and play in an entirely different way. We can no longer give teams 70% possession when we are at home.

Key will be improvements at CB and across the front three.

Three or four really, really good signings should be the aim.

Don't see why we couldn't sacrifice possession at home for another season. We're a team that plays a quick transition so we're quite happy to sit in and when we do get it we don't often keep it for very long precisely because that's not our game.

We beat Swansea last season by 5 goals with about 25% possession.

If we stay up I think we definitely need more about us on the ball and certainly more threat in the final third. You'd expect us to improve on our options in midfield and up front though in the summer.

So far this season we've got away with much less possession and being one of the lowest scorers in the league but it's not sustainable long-term IMO. It's fine while we're scrapping for survival but ideally we want to establish ourselves.

Recently we've been on a good run but there's no getting away from the fact that in every game (bar Soton) the opposition are getting 2/3 absolutely clear chances and somehow we haven't conceded many. It only takes one or two of those to go in and you're losing games if you can't score many.

Yes-IF we stay up a quality striker with control and pace is a priority.

I do wonder if the intention longer term will be to try and get back to the system we had last season (and beginning of this), where we can. Any transfers this January were to solidify the current system and ensure survival, I'm probably wrong but think we may see some transfers with the old system in mind.

I thought I was quite ambitious with my suggested targets last summer but then Forest blew me out of the water with our business so I’m going early and aiming ridiculously high this time……

Henderson perm
Lodi perm
Maguire loan
Ward Prowse perm
Conor Gallagher loan
Hudson Odoi perm
Zaha free
Tammy Abraham loan to buy
