Was having a rare look at the lower league tables this morning and was astonished to see Reading FC rooted to the bottom of League One, well adrift of safety and surely heading to League Two.

Considering they were Premier league not so long ago and Championship play offs even more recently...is this the biggest (or fastest) fall from grace of any club?

Once seemingly such a well run club too. Something gone badly wrong there with the Chinese ownership...

I agree, that ground of theirs is a horrible, soulless cesspit. Wonder what the atmosphere is like at home games these days...

I remember when Northampton went from the Fourth Division to the First and back down to the Fourth in about eight seasons. Don't quote me on the time it took, but it was very quick.

I actually saw them play Sunderland at Roker Park during that yo-yo ride. A flat mate at the time had parents in Chester le Street and we happened to be visiting them at the time.

Absolutely. Really boring bunch of ***** who only turned up when their shit team got to the premier league, then went again just as quickly. Absolute tin pot nothing *****. Good riddance, hope they carry on out the league.

Oldham also-former Premier League members now residing in the National League.

They're just following a path previously trodden by Luton.

Although they've since made their way back to the Championship and upper League One respectively, I'd put former FA Cup winners Coventry City and Bolton Wanderers in there as well. Far bigger clubs who felt well out of place when they dropped to League Two.

Reading are a nothing club who have never won anything and no one followed them before they got into the Premier League (and even then, the town is mostly filled with followers of the big London clubs). Recency bias might suggest they should be in the Championship at least, but in reality the lower leagues are their natural level historically.

The textbook definition of a tinpot club; soulless white elephant stadium, it's townspeople don't care about them, no real history and about as bland and uninteresting as a football club can get.

Reading gave Alan Pardew his first job in management, for that alone they deserve to be banished to the lower leagues.

Mark Lawrenson does not like this post.
Speaking of whom...spotted this on my last visit to Matlock, I wonder if he mentions that story! 20231025_143631.jpg

Don't mind Reading but that's only because my uncle used to work for them and took me to the 3-3 game where Chettle ended up in net for my first away game.

That occured to me when I read the OP I think they won the fourth division in 1960 and reached the first division in 1966 (might be argued that was a bigger acheivment than West Ham winning the World Cup) they were back in the fourth division by 1969.
The 1960's were great weren't they?

I thought Northamton town were the first club to be promoted from 4th to 1st in successive seasons, and then immediately relegated in the following successive seasons.
Never been repeated.
