Oooh, have a read of this...

People keep saying that Bamford was sold to fund Harewood, which is totally inaccurate. In an age of mercenary footballers, playing only for the money, Marlon Harewood should be applauded for coming back to try to help his old club, on so little money that even Mark Arthur agreed to 'find the money somewhere'. There were a number of other loan players who came in afterwards, who were funded by the sales of Bamford and Wes Morgan. I'm not sure we will see Bamford near the Chelsea 1st team any time soon either, but that's just an opinion.

Other than that, an excellent article, as usual Rich.

Agreed and a bit more info here to read and digest/remember :-

Even if Cotts had played him I can't see things panning out much differently. Maybe we'd have received an extra million or so for him, but the bigger picture would have looked the same.

"The Grantham-born teenager had been with Forest's youth set-up from the age of eight and had only played 12 minutes of first-team football.

But a series of eye-catching displays in the FA Youth Cup tempted the Premier League giants to splash out for the 18-year-old's services."

Doesn't that tell you something? 12 minutes of football for a kid who was scoring for fun during a spell at the club where we didn't score for over two months.

It was clear that playing him would have kept him here. Instead we offered money - to a kid born into wealth and privilege. He wasn't chasing the money, he wanted to play and perversely Chelsea offered him a better chance at playing than we did.

The arguments swing one way and another. Play Bamford otherwise he'll go, don't play Tyler Walker, he's too young/inexperienced. When do we play youngsters?

When do we play youngsters?

A complex question that hinges on many factors, not least the character of the young man, the place the club is in etc...

One thing that is usually missed with regards to Bamford, is that in his first loan spell after moving to Chelsea, at MK Dons, after a good debut he looked lost and out of his depth for just over a month. Some would suggest he wasn't ready for first team football...and if he'd been given the chance and done the same here, he'd probably have been dropped rather than given the opportunity to carry on playing.

Wanted to play - not play for Chelsea.

I think it's worked out pretty well for him so far. Back to back championship playoff finals.

Agreed with that, it could turn out to be a masterstroke.

Everyone's saying Mourinho needs to build a dynasty that means playing youngsters Fergie style, and Bamford is at the right age and quality to be introduced.

What a rubbish article. It contains nothing but interesting facts and a balanced point of view. It has none of the invective and partisan rhetoric that I come on here to read. Booh.

Absolutely. He's now a 1 goal in 2 striker with 100ish first team games under his belt, numerous awards, and I believe a championship player of the year award.

Played half of his games inside the top 6 of the championship, that itself prepares a player for the weight of expectation.

60% of his games have been played for clubs above us in the league.

Letting a player like that go would be a mistake in anyone's book. The reasons for letting him go are what frustrate me most - I'm convinced that had he played first team football here he'd have signed a new deal. The kid made it clear all he wanted was to step up in levels and all he got was 12 minutes in a Forest shirt. I dare say that if a league one team had been in for him he'd have been tempted.

He was offered a contract in the summer. He was offered the chance to train with the first team around October time. He turned both down because he wanted to concentrate on his A levels.
The kid made oone thing clear, he wasn't staying at Forest.

I think concentrating on his A Levels was important.

How you can say he decided he wasn't staying at Forest is beyond me.

Rich, he made it abundantly clear both through his Dad and others that he wouldn't sign another deal at NFFC, despite being offered the highest value contract we'd ever out in front of a "Youth" player.

Whether that was because - he felt - the Manager didn't want to play him or he simply wanted to leave, the reason is immaterial.

He wouldn't have stayed at Forest had we offered him the moon on a stick.

So given the offer of a contract and the opportunity to train with the first team at 17 years old, when you want to be a professional footballer is not as important as A levels.
Come on Rich, you're just arguing for the sake of it there!

Surely one thing to be optimistic about is that FFP is going to force us to get our ship in order, at least to the point where we're only running a £3m deficit instead of the circus we've got going on now.

That means that there should be an end to the oversight of young players like Bamford, they should be making up the numbers in the squad with the majority of our budget being spent on the first 11.

He made it clear that playing first team football was his highest agenda. That we offered him money showed how out of touch we were with him.

Maybe having your godfather hounded out of the club he owned had something to do with it.

Big arguing for the same of it. Convinced we offered money to keep him here instead if any of the things he wanted.

Stevie thought he wasn't ready, despite a two month long goal drought. Back to back playoff finals while we languish tells you something.

So he went to Chelsea?

Sorry Rich but I was quite well informed at the time and everyone saw this coming in the previous summer. It was deliberate and orchestrated by him and his old man.
It was his refusal to commit to us or training that cost him any chance of playing for our first team, not that I think that he was ready.

I don't buy the idea that Nigel Doughty was hounded out either, all of the daft protests were anti Marthur.

As in my previous post, the Bamfords manoeuvring started way before then anyway.

That was a fantastic read!!! Love the bit about 'partisan hyperbole', but to tell the truth many Forest fans were aware of the game plan shortcomings even when we were unbeaten and top of table.
I am so sick of loaning 'wonderkids of Premier League'!! Mo Barrow, Chuba Akpom, Tom Ince, Nate Chalobah, Todd Kane and the like think they are too good for Forest.
We should be raiding clubs in the Championship and the lower leagues finding players who want to prove themselves! That is why I'd prefer we kept Jamie Mackie around the place. He might not be the most skillful, but is the sort of player who would give everything week in, week out to help the team win!
