Spend 60M or so on Watford's front three is better value IMO ...
It would cost us a lot more than that unfortunately.

Joao Pedro was signed for £2m but there's a clause in his contract that says Fluminense must be paid £20m should another club look to sign him.

Watford picked up Richarlison from the same team in Brazil and gained a huge profit.

They do seem to know the market well when it comes to attacking flair players.

While I believe this is over what we should pay and that there is better value elsewhere, when it's compared to sterling, haaland and mane, etc., it really isn't comparing apples to apples. Sterling was on a huge whack at city and there is considerable value in getting those wages off the books. This along with the value added to the total transfer value due to the new club paying the wages is never really considered.

Lots of other clauses and nuance in these deals but the biggest one is that the player has to want to come to forest. If a player is worth tens of millions, for the most part they're likely already at a top club, whichever division they're in. There is a big risk moving to a newly promoted club in terms of reputation and future value etc.

It's probably more comparable to Conor Gallagher; went to the Championship and excelled, would Chelsea have sold him for £40m last summer? In the end they loaned him out to Palace instead and he carried on his good form in the Premier League, got his England debut and now Chelsea would probably want at least £60m. We'd be gambling on two things 1, him carrying on his form from last season and transferring it into the Premier League like Gallagher did and 2, us not going down... achieve both those things and we then have a £60m player ourselves. Question is whether these gambles are worth taking in our first season up when the squad needs so much work just to compete.

I’d want a proven Premier League player for this amount of money to be honest-preferably one that makes
the ball stick up front and might even know where the net is.

Why wouldn’t they be ’stubborn buggers’?
They can see how keen ( desperate? ) we are to get him - why wouldn’t they try to squeeze every last penny out of us.
The difference is Johnson doesn't want a move away and doesn't have a couple of years left on his contract.

I can see your point though in that Wolves have seen the money we've been splashing about and are trying to get a huge amount for him.

Just don't see the value anymore when figures are going above £40m.

As I said earlier, Joao Pedro was picked up for £2m by Watford. Our scouting team need to get moving and find these quality bargains.

Why wouldn't they be stubborn buggers? They have a prize asset they know we want.

It's shit, I agree, but we'd be the same.
From what I saw of Morgan when he played for Wolves on Saturday, he didn't look that interested.

Wolves have a dilemma and if they want to be stubborn and the player delivers f-all this season then good luck to them.

Personally think they're taking the mick now and we need to start looking at other good talents who won't cost a quarter of £42m.

It's not taking the mick, it's sound business. They are trying to get the best price for their asset. Yes ok he might not want to be there (I didn't see the game so can't comment on that) but that shouldn't stop them wanting to get the best price for him, he's still their player. Am I missing something here?

He doesn't want to be at Wolves. He looked very flat on Saturday. He could easily deliver nothing this season and be available for far less next summer, with only a year left on his contract. That's why they're taking the mick.

Johnson always wanted to stay with Forest and so the comparisons are not there for me. Gibbs-White has had a contract offer on the table from the beginning of the summer and hasn't signed it. Consider that Wolves are an established Premier League team (this will be their 5th consecutive season) and Johnson only held his contract talks because he always wanted to play in the Premier League.....

You seem to be equating MGW looking flat to him not wanting to be there. Not sure I agree. There could be many reasons for that.

But even if he doesn't want to be there, I say again, why does their player not wanting to be there mean they should accept less than market value for him?

Johnson was happy to stay or leave and indicated he wouldn't be signing a new contract without promotion.

Do you get the impression they don't want to sell him?
Yeah which makes us chucking more and more money at it all the more bizarre; he isn't proven at this level at all. Why not keep chucking money at a team who do have a Premier League proven attacking midfielder? I say we bid the same for Emile Smith-Rowe, Arsenal won't want to sell him either but at least if we accidentally bid enough to make Arsenal sell we'll end up with a player who we know cuts the mustard at this level. We could also try James Maddison, or Trossard we'd probably have about as much luck!

I've already explained.

Would you want an unhappy and demotivated player at your club when you could take £42m for him? When he could be available for less than that next summer with only a year left on his contract?

Doesn't make sense. Would you say MGW's market value is £42m?

Exactly

They don’t want to sell him unless for silly money, and that’s their prerogative.

Thing is, Wolves situation isn't that secure. Their owners have had to turn off the tap somewhat and their team is looking pretty threadbare for quality, to the point where I'd consider them in that group of teams that will probably be scrapping at the bottom. We're potential rivals to them so it's not just what Morgan Gibbs-White worth to us, it's what is he worth to them.

End of the day, if he wants to leave, he can put in a transfer request but he hasn't yet so can't want to be here that badly.
We've lost our negotiating platform when we said final offer and then went back with an improved bid.

The maddest thing is, he's not even the answer to what we need at this point. We need a defensive midfielder more than anything.
f***ing buy Samba Sow and fit him with some new legs or something.

In all seriousness £42m would probably get (for example) Vardy from Leicester. It’s an enormous amount of money
