Messi or Ronaldo?

Messi is undoubtedly the best player to have ever played the game. Winning the World Cup just cemented the status but for me it was there anyway.

Cristiano Ronaldo is an elite player no doubt about that but as an all-round player can't hold a candle to the little magician.

Maradona just didn't have a long enough peak. His career is a bit like someone like Ronaldinho.

Messi and Ronaldo are both over-rated and shit.
They wouldn't have lasted five minutes when real men played the game.
Few modern players would have lasted 5 minutes in the 1860's/70's under Lincolnshire Association rules where kicking the legs out from under players was allowed as part of the game.

Messi because Ronaldo is a cheating scumbag who has 0 worth in a world which still values honour and sportsmanship. He's literally a living advert for everything which has gone wrong about football, from silly wages to hilariously bad ref conning.

I don't think either make it in the 70's or 80's game. Whereas I think Maradona, Robertson, Cruyff etc. all make it in the post 00's game though.

So who is Harvey?
At the moment?

My money is on Jude Bellingham, who is in absolutely sensational form at the biggest club side in the world.

Currently, given where Messi and C. Ronaldo are playing, both have effectively retired.

I think Pele has to be a prime contender, even playing so long ago now:

Pele is the GOAT for me.

My dad used to rave about Puskas of Hungary. 84 goals in 85 internationals can't be sniffed at. Hungary were a very good team in the early to mid 1950's I believe.
Yeah, the Magic Magyars (or Mighty Magyars) they were called weren't they?

They had the 6-3 win at Wembley and then won 7-1 vs England in Budapest too, and they lost the World Cup Final amidst rumours of the Germans using performance enhancing substances I think....(and Puskas having a 'goal' VAR would have been having a look at at least I think, that was disallowed!).

These channels are maybe the best, if I'm trying to do the same for Puskas/Hungary as I did for Pele above:

I think the game was more open in the 1950s than 1960s, but I believe Puskas is right up at the top as far as numbers of goals (and assists) go in International football and in general. They had other excellent players like Hidegkuti, Kocsis, Bozsik, Czibor etc too though (obviously Brazil did have various world class players themselves though when Pele was playing).

Talking of John Robertson, who Alf mentioned, I'm sure I read that he was keen to impress Puskas in the Forest vs AEK Athens match in 1978/79, because Puskas had been one of his heroes, or something like that.

Puskas was the AEK Athens coach. I'm pretty sure he was impressed too!

For the original question there's nothing to debate. One is an all time great goal scorer whilst the other is that too, plus one of the greatest dribblers and playmakers of all time. Messi just has so much more to his arsenal, plus he doesn't spend half the game rolling around play acting.

Of all time it must be Edson Arantes do Nascimento. What couldn't he do. It's frightening to think how good he would be under todays refereeing standards, and with the improved fitness, diet and training.

Football is a team game and I’d say the the most impactful player to every team he’s played for is Ronaldo. He’s dragged his teams to win things.

Individually, who’s the best players is too difficult a question to me but my favourite ever player is Ronaldo (the Brazilian obviously).

I saw him play for PSV Eindhoven when he was still a teenager, and still he’s the most raw, exciting footballer I’ve ever seen „live“.

I also loved watching Ronaldinho, an unpredictable maverick who did whatever he felt like, and made watching his football an absolute joy.
