Anybody else seen the photo doing the rounds of him crying after receiving a lot of racial abuse in the game against napoli? Disgusting stuff not that unusual in serie a as of late though. They aren't doing enough out there to stop it

I was working in Italy a few years ago when Balotelli was still at Inter. The guy we were dealing with was an Inter fan and told me that he didn't class Balotelli as Italian. Pretty shocking for us, but not at all unusual over there.

No, my point is the fact he's been going around for years acting like the biggest twat in football will obviously catch up with him some day. And not by any means is racism acceptable for a second, but I'm surprised he hasn't suffered abuse already from the racists taking exception to his antics.

Balotelli is quality. 'Why always me?', the fireworks in his bathroom, his silly blonde mohawk, being a hard bastard, that celebration vs Germany. The list could go on. How has he been a 'twat' exactly?

There's little to dislike, unless you're a Man Utd fan

He has.

He's suffered shocking racist abuse in Italy, when he first broke into the Azurri team, because of his colour.

One bunch - can't remember which knuckle-draggers it was - held up a banner "red, white and green, no black" (referring sarcastically to the colours of the Italian flag).

Much as Italy has to recommend it as a country, their social attitudes are like England in the 1980s.

I agree with Chris.

For all the talk of Mario being as mad as a bag of ferrets, he's spent large parts of his career taking racial abuse from utter morons in the stand. I'm open to being corrected but I think he's been stoic and dealt with it professionally when it'd probably be easier for him to quit international football and not play in Italy.

I've never heard anyone suggest a way you can stop the racist abuse though. How do you do it? If a nation is as inherently racist as Italy appears to be, what can you do? Stop crowds attending?

I don't think there'll ever be a definitive way to stop it tbh. The only way would be to have cameras facing the crowd at games and people monitoring the behaviour.
